After the first full week of rehearsals, the 223 musicians of NYO-USA, NYO2, and NYO Jazz came together for several shared experiences on Saturday, July 20. The morning began with improvisation workshops in groups of 20–25 students from all three ensembles. The full group then assembled on the stage of the Concert Hall at Purchase College to read through two works. The combined NYO-USA and NYO2 orchestras played movements from Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1, which were alternated with the Billy Strayhorn / Duke Ellington arrangements of the same music, performed by NYO Jazz. The event concluded with a “world premiere”—a new arrangement for jazz band and symphony orchestra of the first-ever commission for NYO Jazz, Run with Jones, by Miguel Zenón. That evening, the three ensembles socialized together with a dinner and harbor cruise around .

In its fourth season, NYO2 partnered with the New World Symphony for the NYO2 at Carnegie Hall second time, traveling to Miami Beach for a six-day residency and performance at the state-of-the-art New World Center. In preparation for the exciting trip, the musicians trained at Purchase College, working with a world-class faculty that included New World Symphony fellows, as well as other professional musicians from top US orchestras. Resident Conductor Joseph Young (newly appointed music director of the Berkeley Symphony) returned to lead the ensemble during the Purchase residency, preparing the musicians for the arrival of maestro Carlos Miguel Prieto.

Following two weeks of sectionals, rehearsals, master classes, and private lessons, the talented young musicians headed down to Miami Beach, where they had the chance to work closely with New World Symphony fellows. NYO2’s residency culminated in a performance at the New World Center under the baton of Mr. Prieto with pianist Gabriela Montero as soloist. The program included Stravinsky’s Pétrouchka, Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat (abridged), and Ms. Montero’s Piano Concerto No. 1, “Latin,” performed by the composer. The performance was shared with a wide audience via WALLCAST®, with the full concert projected onto the 7,000-square-foot eastern façade of the building, facing SoundScape Park.

During their time in Miami Beach, the NYO2 musicians had the opportunity to play and learn side-by-side with local young musicians from the Miami Music Project. They also enjoyed a bus tour of the city and a walking tour of Wynwood Walls.

Following their Miami Beach residency, the NYO2 musicians returned to New York to participate in a side-by-side music-making session at The Juilliard School with musicians from the Sphinx Performance Academy. The final celebratory performance took place at Carnegie Hall; both concerts at the New World Center and Carnegie Hall featured rousing Latin-themed encores.

NYO Jazz tour by Todd Rosenberg. “NYO-USA was a life-changing experience for many reasons, but I find that the most beautiful reason was how I was able to finally see all the hard work I put into my music career. When I looked out into Royal Albert Hall during the BBC Proms, I saw myself as a five-year-old in the back of my school orchestra, not having any musical knowledge due to my lack of English skills and private lessons. I never thought I would make anything out of myself, and then I was in one of the biggest music festivals in the world. I will carry these memories for the rest of my life.” —Valentina Paolucci, NYO-USA Violinist
