Southport Yacht Club | iN SYnC | 21 houseboat on the high seas

SYC member, John Lucas (pictured above) is a true sailing enthusiast, who has been sailing for more than 60 years. His love of sailing started at Royal Geelong Yacht Club as a young boy, sailing dinghies and cats. John has cruised and raced in some exotic locations like the Greek Islands, Southern France and of course the Whitsundays. His sailing today is in the SYC Thursday Twilight Series and SYC Daydream at Sea Offshore events skippering a beautiful Beneteau 47, in which he has won many events. The builders of the boat eventually trusted John’s confidence But his most memorable sea voyage was in 1972 as the that it was feasible to sail Daydream to its destination in skipper of the most unlikely vessel in an epic voyage New Guinea. There was, of course, many sceptics and the from Geelong to Thursday Island, a distance of around authorities took quite a bit of convincing but eventually 3000 nautical miles. The vessel was a flat bottom, steel John and his crew of volunteer sailing novices set off. This was a boat built for the flat waters in the rivers wind conditions they reached their destination at Thursday of New Guinea, certainly not for taking on some of the Island, two days short of three months. toughest seas in the world in Bass Strait and the southeast corner of the Australian mainland. The houseboat was built in Geelong mainly by volunteers involved with the Pentecostal Church. The boat called “Daydream” was designed for missionary work in New Guinea. The shallow draft and jet propulsion would allow it to reach areas of the country that were otherwise inaccessible. When completed it was intended for “Daydream” to be transported as deck cargo on a ship to New Guinea, however the cost and other logistical problems made this impractical. John knew the people building the boat and he said he thought he could sail it to New Guinea.

At 27 years of age John had more than fifteen years sailing experience and one of his crew and the builder of the boat Len Day, was a pilot, so had navigation experience. But sailing a forty foot long by sixteen foot wide flat bottom steel houseboat that weighed over 10 tons, at sea, was very different to what John was used to. But his sailing experience was obviously invaluable in completing the voyage safely. The boat was fitted with sails and with the The adventures of Daydream got a lot of media attention diesel engine could cruise at around 5 knots.

But they brought with them 3 goats, 12 pullets, and a rooster, Daydream looked like Two of the greatest hazards encountered were crossing Noah’s Ark for a while! John describes Daydream being like a giant surf board, due to the flat bottom so the major difficulty was keeping it straight while surfing down breaking waves. The Ballina Harbour Master said that Daydream’s crossing of the bar, was the most spectacular he had ever seen. That day the bar was supposed to be closed as there were 20 foot waves, breaking on the bar.

John’s girlfriend, Margaret was in Geelong anxiously waiting for any news, during the trip, the longest she had to wait between updates was nine agonising days. John and Margaret got married in Geelong two years after the voyage and they are still together today after 42 years. John and Margaret moved to the Gold Coast ten years ago. John’s family was involved in the hospitality industry in Geelong and most of John’s career has also been in running hotels, restaurants and night clubs. John worked in the sixties at the legendary Chevron Hilton “Silver Spade Room” night club at Kings Cross. This experience led him into his career in managing concert tours of Australia by some of the world’s leading entertainers including Elton John, The Bee Gees, Suzi Quatro and many more. John’s son Matthew has continued his fathers and grandfathers involvement in the hospitality industry, owning and managing Kitty O’Sheas in Surfers Paradise. The sailing academy has now commenced term three of sailing and we are very excited to see our young sailors getting back out and enjoying being on the water. Over the holidays many of our young sailors travelled away to compete at regattas including Queensland Youth Week and Sail Brisbane. It was great to see so many of our young sailors representing Southport Yacht Club and having a great time doing so with everyone receiving a result they should be proud of. With term three kicking off so too does our blazer squad training. It has been great to see how quickly the young sailors have taken to sailing on these boats and how fast they are learning. Even though we have only spent a couple of weeks in these boats it is already obvious that there is an increase in the skills of the young sailors. From things like team work and body weight in the boat right through to using spinnakers. We hope to see these sailors putting what they learn this term in to their own boats when normal training returns in term 4, as well as being comfortable in being able to crew on larger trailer sailor boat for twilight races as well as the upcoming match racing series which is being held at Hollywell. Our young bronze sailors are improving quickly and with a strong fleet of sailors it is great to see them out on the water learning and improving every week. The Polar Bear series has been a great way for these young green fleet sailors to go and mix it with older more experienced sailors and it has been awesome to see them all doing so well in the larger fleet. We hope to see all our young sailors down the Club soon out on the water enjoying the beautiful weather.

26 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club story of rememberance & friendships

In January the yacht Amante returning to Sydney from the Club Marine Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race lost a crew member Mal Lennon (62) overboard and was never recovered. The Amante competing in the 2016 Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race at the position where their crew member was lost the vessel luffed up and came to a stop and the same crew, as was in the return Journey to Sydney, had two minutes silence and it was an emotional few minutes for all the crew on board. The Amante arrived at Southport on Monday night at the completion of the event, and was proceeding to the Southport Yacht Club berth and was met by a Club tender to escort them to their berth. The crew of the tender were first time Southport Yacht Club volunteers of this race. Will and Allison Ewens were the skipper and crew of the tender and Allison remembered that Amante was the vessel who had lost a crew member in January and that crew member was Allison’s cousin. An emotional introduction and friendship has arisen from the crew of Amante and Will and Allison that will last Amante berthed at Southport Yacht Club after the 2016 Land forever.
