2017 Sourcebook 25 WOODWORKING WOODWORKING

Brian Boggs D.A. King Design Chairmakers, Inc.

Brian Boggs doesn’t think up new designs. They are already there waiting for him to find them. After decades of practice and study, Brian finds his work usually takes the form of a chair or table. The creative process involved in bringing them about is focused on opening to what is coming in rather than thinking about what he might design. Only when there is a balance of shapes, dimensions, and patterns of grain, creating a feeling of peace and comfort, is a design complete.

So much of the inspiration Doug has for his designs in wood come from his love of the natural landscapes. Now living back in Missoula, Montana, he has set up a small furniture shop. He takes inspiration from the strength, grace and shape of a tree and tries to translate that in the shape and form of his furniture.

Felton + Ferguson Finch Woodworks Woodworking

The collaborative work of Felton + Ferguson involves both design and craft. Their pieces highlight traditional woodworking techniques while finding contemporary lines. Native reclaimed woods of the West are layered in depth and history. Hand tools are used rather than machines, shaping their furniture into sculpture with a function.

Jordan opened Finch Woodworks in 2004, specializing in timber framing and fine carpentry. In addition to his custom work with clients he was a professor of timber framing at the American College of the Building Arts, Charleston, SC, 2012-2015. He continues his involvement with The Timber Framing Guild through the projects committee and teaching workshops. Jordan’s goal is simple, “to grow as a craftsman and provide the best work possible.”

Grain of Thought Henneford Fine Furniture

Nestled on the shore of Flathead Lake in northwest Montana is the home and shop of self-taught woodworking artist Steve Henneford. “I believe that wood is beautiful, warm and timeless. I like to build simple elegant furniture with flowing lines that is both beautiful and comfortable,” he says. Steve finishes each piece by hand, rubbing oil into the furniture to bring out the natural beauty of the wood and create a finish smooth as glass.

John Geraghty, founder of Grain of Thought and longtime NYC woodworker now lives in the beautiful Berkshire mountains of western Massachusetts. Geraghty has been sustainably harvesting beautiful domestic logs and handcrafting heirloom quality furniture and architectural woodwork for 30 years. John Burroughs, “How the eye delights in the nude beauty of the wood,” is a favorite quote of John Geraghty’s.

HowKola Keoni Carlson Furniture by Tim Lozier

Furniture—when Tim hears that word he thinks of creativity. He started in the furniture business 20 years ago building Molesworth reproductions. To this day that style remains the most popular type of furniture he builds. In 1998, he started his own business, How Kola Furniture, and began putting his own spin on Molesworth designs. This has given him a great deal of creative freedom and plenty of ideas to upgrade his style of furniture. Keoni (Jon) Carlson re-imagines wood as woven basketry, creating illusions that invite touch and participation. Working from his Colorado mountain studio, the artist uses texture, color and negative space to hand carve unique, heirloom artwork inspired by native culture storytelling and legend. His art is optimistic, sometimes whimsical, always delicious.
