I hope you are as delighted as I am with all of the wonderful productions The Old Globe has presented in 2004. From ’s Resurrection Blues to Stephen Wadsworth’s elegant adaptation of Moliere’s Don Juan to the delightful Lucky Duck, it has definitely been a banner year at the Globe. Now after a marvelous summer celebrating The Old Globe’s return to a three-play Shakespeare repertory, we turn to Jack O’Brien’s latest mega- musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, starring John Lithgow, and many of Broadway’s finest, including Norbert Leo Butz, Sherie Rene Scott and Joanna Gleason. Given the excitement of this Broadway-bound production, we scheduled our annual Globe Gala to celebrate the production’s world premiere. Thank you so much for supporting this fine theatre. Without your attendance and continued donations, we certainly couldn’t perform at the level you’ve come to expect. I know of no other non-profit theatre that consistently presents the number of great productions that we do here, and I hope you feel proud of your relationship to The Old Globe and that you invite friends and family to discover what a treasure we have here. Thank you for attending this performance, as well as others in the past and future. Your support is so critical to the ongoing suc- cess of the Globe, and we are pleased to have you with us. There will be one 15-minute intermission. AT&T has a long history of support for The Old Globe, having sponsored last year’s production of Dirty Blonde, as well as Da, Play On!, Imaginary Friends, The White Rose, The Old Settler and Jar the Floor. We are proud to recognize AT&T as both a 2004 Season Sponsor and as a Lead Sponsor of this production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. AT&T is recognized for unparalleled communication services, and for its long-standing commitment to public service and philanthropy — including significant support for the arts. Locally, the remains actively involved throughout the San Diego community and is represented on the Globe’s Board of Directors by Sales Center Vice President Tim MacDonald. Donald and Darlene Shiley first attended the Globe in 1982 for the “new” Old Globe’s inaugural pro- duction of As You Like It. The two met when Darlene was playing the lead in The Lion in Winter in the Bay Area, and have supported the theatre ever since. In addition to funding the Shiley Artist-in-Residence program, and supporting the The Old Globe/USD Master of Fine Arts program, the Shileys have served as sponsors for over 15 Globe productions, including , Driving Miss Daisy, and The Way of the World. Conrad Prebys has always enjoyed sharing his success with worthy San Diego non-profits. Conrad is the CEO of Progress Construction, a company he formed in 1965. In addition to real estate development, Conrad is a major benefactor of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East County. Conrad has recently become a Season Sponsor of The Old Globe, and we are extremely grateful for his generosity, as well as his excitement about the theatre. We applaud AT&T, Donald and Darlene Shiley and Conrad Prebys for their community leadership through their sponsorship of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P7 (Excerpted from Jack O'Brien's remarks to the company at the first rehearsal.)

Four years ago, many of us met in this room and began a project called The Full Monty, and we had a wonderful time, primarily because of the amazing working stability that has evolved in this theatre over the last 25 years. Here we are four years later, surrounded by an extraordi- narily gifted and loving staff. We're going to dive in, and we have a lot of things to talk about today, not the least of which is what this show is and what it's about to be.

This is a musical about conning. There's something affectionate to me about the idea of a con. It has to do with wit and elegance and ping-pong balls up in the air making you laugh. When people get taken in situations like this we usually think of it as mea culpa. “I should have seen it coming. But I didn't.” The affectionate part of it is that it's a little bit of a laugh on us. If I can slip one over on you and no one's any the wiser and I get a little richer, it's not a big deal. It's not like murder. It's not like mayhem. It's not like evil…I'm not approving of cons. I just happen to be one.

So when we started to find a vocabulary in the scenic and costume designs for this show, it had to be something beautiful. This is the Riviera. These people are rich. Very rich. And part of the fun of going to a casino or anything like it, where chance is rampant, is the possibility that you are existing in a world that could tip your way. And if you've ever been in those places, even though people look beautiful, it doesn't seem to be about sex or hunting. It's about Lady Luck. So if you're gambling, you're an accomplice. You know. They tell you. They tell you coming in. They tell you going out what the odds are. But it is fascinating. Visually, orally, character-wise, people pretending to be other people … So we came up with the beginning of what this world is, which is azure blue and really enticing. It's all beautiful. It's all magic. It's all a con.

We hope you’ll consider joining the Craig Noel League, the planned giving society of The Old Globe. The time has come to secure the future of the Globe — which has enriched our lives and nourished us for nearly 70 years — so that it will do the same for generations to come. Many thoughtful friends are ensuring The Old Globe’s future by leaving gifts in their wills and estate plans to help us in this effort. The League honors today these thought- ful friends whose generosity will sustain the excellence of The Old Globe for generations. Examples of ways friends are helping include making simple bequests, gifts of life insurance, gifts of real estate, and charitable trusts.
