Contestants submitted pitches in the form of 90 second videos via YouTube that were viewed by a panel of industry judges who narrowed them to 10 finalists. They could pitch any type of show they wanted: a 1/2 hour drama for a traditional network, an hour drama for cable, a hybrid for original online content. The only guideline was that it be for a scripted (non-reality) series and pitched in under a minute and a half. Those 10 FINALISTS then pitched for 3 minutes LIVE at the festival, where judges chose one (1) winner. 557 VIDEO SUBMISSIONS were received and narrowed down to 20 SEMI-FINALISTS by a panel of screeners. PRESENTED WITH 2018 JUDGES Anna Fricke, Creator/Showrunner & Franklin Leonard, Founder of THE BLACK LIST Bryan Seabury, Senior Vice President Drama Development, CBS TV Studios Katy Rozelle, Senior Vice President Development, Paramount Television Dina Hillier, Vice President Original Series, Disney Channel Kaitlin Dahill, Director of Development, Chernin Entertainment 2018 FINALISTS INCLUDED 5 Comedy, 5 Drama • 8 Females, 6 Males • 6 Solo Pitchers, 4 Pairs WINNER & PRIZE All 10 Finalists received badges to the festival and a copy of Final Draft. The winner received a mentor session with a Pitch Judge to help hone and develop his pitch, as well as an opportunity to pitch the finalized version to a Studio/Network partner of the festival. The winner also spent one week sitting in on an active writers room (complete with a one-on-one lunch with the showrunner), a three-month subscription to THE BLACK LIST, and an Industry Badge to ATX Television Festival 2018. Past Winners have been signed by representation by the end of the weekend, pitched to Networks/Studios such as Sony TV, 20th Century Fox, NBC/Universal, Happy Madison, Paramount TV, and established new creative relationships for upcoming projects. 2018 SPECIAL EVENTS OPENING NIGHT launched Season 7 with a red carpet and premiere screening of HBO’s SHARP OBJECTS followed by a Q&A with actor/EP Amy Adams, director/ EP Jean-Marc Vallée, showrunner/EP Marti Noxon, author/writer Gillian Flynn, Blumhouse Productions Founder & CEO Jason Blum, eOne Television’s President of Global Scripted Programming Pancho Mansfield, and HBO’s EVP of Programming, David Levine. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1.
