W Skip Glenn Howard extended his record On- tario men’s curling championship streak to seven straight last month but also qualifi ed for his 14th Brier appear- ance which tied him with brother Russ in appearances at the national championship. Glenn’s next goal is to tie brother Russ as a two-time Brier-winning skip when the action starts at the Credit Union Centre. Of course, Glenn celebrated Russ’s wins playing third in 1987 and 1993. The 49-year-old beer store manager from Midland directed his Coldwater team of Wayne Middaugh, Brent Lang and to another 12-game provincial sweep when he beat former teammate and good friend Peter Corner of Brampton 5-4 in the fi nal of the Dominion Tankard. It was Howard’s third victory over Corner in an Ontario fi nal. But it almost fell apart on what appeared to be a rou- tine fi nal shot. Corner had put his last shot on the button to lie two but was a shade too deep. It left Howard an open tap for the win, but his shooter only just stopped rolling in time. “We got ‘er done. Wow. This never gets old,” a very relieved Howard told Sun Media. “He (Corner) throws that top four and I’m almost certainly having to draw the lid and I had it in my mind all end that that was what I was going to have to do. I didn’t take much ice, but halfway down it was still hanging out there. It just kept hanging and hanging and I thought, ‘Oh, no.’ Glenn Howard with front end Brent Laing and Craig Savill. When Hart was forced out of the Canada Cup a couple of years back at Medicine Hat and Mid- daugh filled in, the writing was on the wall. The team won that event. And when Hart decided to retire at the end of last season, “it was a no- brainer”. “And it was a three-year decision,” added How- ard. “This is to go right on to the Olympic trials.” Howard says he proud of the fact his team has been installed as a Brier favourite this week. “Our secret has been consistency,” he said. “We just don’t play badly very often. We generally play well enough to win all the way along. That gets you to the playoffs where you have to step it up a notch. Sometimes we have, sometimes we haven’t. “Obviously, we keep getting here and keep getting to the playoffs. People know that we’re a consistently good team. And everybody is going to have to play really well to beat us. We play well all the time. That’s what we do.” And, obviously, Glenn Howard wants to keep it that way for the next nine days. Right through to one of those ever-elusive finals . . . and beyond.
