Ilesa - Home of Ilesa - Home of "Osomaloo" Ilesa State was founded c.1500. Ilesha (or Ilesa) is the largest town and the capital of Ijesha kingdom in Osun State, Nigeria. Latitude 8.92°N Longitude 3.42°E. it lies in the Yoruba Hills and at the intersection of roads from Ile-Ife, Oshogbo, and Akure. There are many other towns and villages in Ijeshaland, in fact not less than 200 towns and villages. Ipetu-Ijesa, Esa-Oke, Ijebu-Jesa, Ibokun are towns that have between 100,000 and 120,000 inhabitants. There are other towns like Imesi-Ile, Ikeji-IIe, Ifewara, Erin-Ijesha, Esa-Odo, Kajola, Otan-Ile, Owena-Ijesha etc. The Ijesas are the "Osomaalos" of Nigeria. As described in the book by Omole (1991) the appellation was originally considered as a term of abuse to characterize the aggressive Ijesa textile traders. The word ‘Osomaalo’ is tied to the process of debt collection. It means ‘I will not sit until I have collected my money,’ showing an inflexible determination to succeed in the face of all odds. Ilesa - In modern times Modern Ilesha is a major collecting point for the export of cocoa and a traditional cultural centre for the Ilesha (Ijesha) branch of the Yoruba people. Palm oil and kernels, yams, cassava, corn (maize), pumpkins, cotton, and kola nuts are collected for the local market. Local industries manufacture nails and carpets, and the town has a brewery; there are also a recording company and a publishing firm, and the Supreme Oil industry at Ilesha. Several prominent quartzite ridges lie east of Ilesha, and gold mining is an important activity in the area, i.e The Iperindo Gold field. Ilesha is a classic - though hardly a typical - example of that ethnographic celebrity, the Yoruba town: a large, nucleated settlement that is the centre of a kingdom and itself the primary residence of an overwhelmingly agricultural population. Even when it was largely derelict owing to war, in 1886, Ilesha's population was estimated to be between 20,000 and 25,000 and a figure of up to 40,000 may be appropriate for the height of its growth before the sack in 1870. Though this is not as large as the largest Oyo-Yoruba towns of the nineteenth century, its considerable size was not due,as theirs was, to very heavy recent immigration under the impact of the wars. It was the recognition of the need for the Ijesa to lift up themselves by their own bootstraps that led to the establishment of the Ijesa Improvement Society, the first modern pan-Ijesa socio-cultural group, in 1922. It was at a time when the Ijesa not only had problems with their British colonial overlords but also with their own local administration under the Owa Obokun who had since 1914 been constituted into a Sole Native Authority on the model of the Northern Nigeria Emirates, under the Indirect Rule of System introduced by Sir Fredrick Lugard. This meant that the Ijesa had to contend not only with a hostile foreign colonial power but with a despotic local administration supported by that foreign colonial power. In this kind of unpleasant political climate, the best help was self help. The principle of self help, which was elevated to a philosophy of action by the aggressively individualistic Ijesa in the inter-war years, was to assist the socio-economic development of Ijesaland and to make the Ijesa very cautious towards, if not totally suspicious of all governments be it local, regional or national in the post war and pre-independence era. This explains why the few commercial and industrial establishments in Ijesaland today are owned largely by the Ijesa themselves. Indeed, with the exception of the recent Federal Government efforts to exploit the gold deposits at Itagunmodi and Igun in Atakumosa Local Government area, there are virtually no government-sponsored commercial and industrial undertakings in the whole of Ijesaland." .

These Churches have established Schools and employed teachers ranging from. Primary Schools, to Secondary Schools, teacher training colleges and colleges of education. To crown it all many of these Churches have founded Universities spending huge amounts ranging to millions of naira to keep these institutions going.

The following cash crops: cocoa, oil palm, groundnuts, timber, rubber as well as staple food crops like rice, maize, millet, beans among others are agricultural products in Nigeria then. With discovery of oil in late fifties, agricultural sector was neglected and the country moved from self-sufficient to one of heavily dependence on importation of food crops such as rice, wheat, rice etc. to feed her populace. Cocoa farmers in Ilesha constitute the sampling frame for the study. A two-stage random sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents for the study. Random sampling technique was used to select Nine (9) cells in the study area, followed by purposive selectionof ten (10) cocoa farmers, which gives a sample size of ninety (90) cocoa farmers. Primary data were collected through the use of structured questionnaire and interview schedule. Information collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics, regression analytical tools and budgetary technique to: present the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents,determine the level of relationship between the dependent and independent variables anddetermine the costs and returns, hence profitability of cocoa production.

The data utilized in the paper draws on systematic sampling of 368 health consumers in the study area. Findings revealed that socio-economic characteristics play a significant role in determining the frequency of visits to healthcare facilities, this is substantiated with the chi-square test result that revealed a significant relationship between marital status and frequency of visits to healthcare facilities with χ² = 29.175 and significant at p = 0.004 level, as well as income of households and the frequency of visits to healthcare facilities with χ² = 20.961 and significant at p = 0.007 levels. The paper therefore concluded that efforts should be put in place to improve the socio-economic status of individuals through multi-sectoral development activities such as micro-credit facilities and provision of employment opportunities which is believed will invariably improve their access and utilization of healthcare facilities. The increase in commuting distance has impact on trip attraction, fares paid by commuters, traffic build- up in some land use areas; and shows the need for different modes of transportation. The study examined the commuting pattern and transportation challenges in Akure Metropolis, Ondo State, Nigeria. A total number of 398 copies of structured questionnaire were distributed to commuters along the selected roads (Oyemekun road, Ondo road, Oba Ile road, Arakale road, Oke Aro road, Hospital road, Ijoka road, Oda road, Danjuma road, and Sijuade road). Data obtained were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings showed that 52% were males and more than 70% of respondents were above 20 years. The mostly used type of transport in Akure City was public taxi (40.5%) and majority (49.7%) spent ≤ 30 minutes on the road before reaching their working place while the distance from home to work of more than 50% was ≤ 2km. The main trip purpose for commuters was education (33%) while most of the trips were made in the morning only (29.4%); and morning and evening (32.4%). However, 47.5% of commuters agreed that the peak hour of congestion is always between 7am and 9am.

Ige2 1Department of Plant Science, University of Ado-Ekiti, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria 2Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Nigeria Issued 15 March 2008 ABSTRACT A combination of social survey and direct field observation was used to identify the medicinal plant species used in Ijesa land of Osun State, Nigeria. Voucher specimens of the species were obtained and the relative abundance for each of the identified botanical species was determined. A total of 45 plant species belonging to 30 families were identified. Our survey indicated they were used in the control of 22 diseases. Tribal information of these species is passed from one generation to another. These species were found to have multiple uses in the study area. Only 29% of the species were cultivated in the study area. A considerable proportion of these plant species were extracted predatorily and collections were done indiscriminately without consideration for size and age. At present, only 47% of the medicinal plants fall in the ‘abundant’ category for this study area. Most of these abundant species were cultivated for their fruits, seeds, leaves or vegetables. Finally, strategies that would enhance the conservation of the species in the study area were proposed. INTRODUCTION The Ijesa are a distinct ethnic Yoruba indigenous group in Osun State, Nigeria. They are found in local government areas in Ilesa West, Ilesa East, Oriade, Obokun and Atakumosa. Ijesa, like other Yoruba groups, cherished and preserved their culture seriously (Kayode 2002).

The 19th century history of Yorubaland was characterized with series of wars and crises. The war which was a bold step to throw away the Ibadan hegemony over the eastern Yorubaland saw the coming together of all towns in the eastern Yorubaland, hence the appellation of Ekitiparapo. The coming together of the people however saw the absence of Ado Ekiti in the grand alliance. The reason for Ado Ekiti not participating in the war is highlighted here. This paper therefore examines the factors that are responsible for Ado Ekiti absence in the war. It was a war that put an end to all manners of wars and semblance of war in Yorubaland. Indeed, it was a war for supremacy between Ilesha, Ekiti, Igbomina and Ibadan. It started on 30th July 1877. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the old Oyo Empire which was on the verge of decay eventually collapsed under the onslaught of the Muslim Fulani Emirate established at Ilorin.
