This volume reframes mid-century African American literature and challenges our current understand- ings of both African American and American literature. It presents a fluid tradition that includes history, science, politics, economics, space and movement, the visual, and the sonic. Black writing was highly conscious of transnational and international politics, textual circulation, and revolutionary imaginaries. Chapters explore how Black literature was being produced and circulated; how and why it marked its relation to other literary and expressive traditions; what geopolitical imaginaries it facilitated through representation; and what technologies, including print, enabled African Americans to pursue such a complex and ongoing aesthetic and political project. is a Professor in the English and Film Studies Department at the University of Alberta, where she teaches critical race theory, African American literature and theory, and historical Black feminisms. The first story is a record of tangible accomplishments: awards won, books published, research findings announced, programs implemented. I trust that you will be as impressed as I am by the array of excellence—on the part of both students and faculty—on display in these pages. The second story is about achievements in the making. I mean by this the ongoing activity of research, teaching, and learning; the forging of new collaborations; and the development of promising initiatives. This is a story of preparation, dedication, and vision, all of which are essential to bringing about our ultimate success. 3 As I look back on 2004-05, several examples of achievement and visionary planning emerge with particular clarity: Faculty and Student Recruitment. Roberta Hildagard Quander was born on February 10, 1924 to Robert H. Quander and Sadie Chinn Quander. Her parents had been married at Alfred Street in February 1911 by Rev. Alexander Truatt. Roberta was the youngest of four children born to this couple, including Grayce Elaine, Emmett and another brother (stillborn). Roberta’s sister Grayce had served as Treasurer at Alfred Street and upon her death in 1967, the church honored Grayce with a special cancer fund taken each year. Roberta accepted Christ at an early and joined Alfred Street, her family church, in 1928 as a four-year old. Her family had been members of Alfred Street since 1807 when Mariah Quander joined. -

In eighteenth-century France, conceptions of what differentiates humans from animals and machines became a sustained topic of interest in spaces that were public and private, recreational and intellectual. This dissertation argues that eighteenth-century harpsichords were porous sites where performers, composers, artisans, academics, and pedagogues negotiated the limits of these fragile boundaries. French harpsichords are at the center of my dissertation because they embodied an experimental collision of animal parts and other biomatter, complex machinery, and visual and musical performance. Taken together, I consider the ways that instruments had social import apart from sound production alone, expanding the definition of ii “instrument” beyond traditional organological studies of style in craftsmanship and musical aesthetics.
