“Charms” is the program used to track the financial records of your student and as a means of communication (via email) between the band department and your family.

Log on to www.charmsoffice.com and click the “ENTER” link at upper right.

Locate the “PARENT/STUDENT/MEMBERS LOGIN” section of the web page.

Login to your child’s program account using the following School Code: BenDavisHSBand

This will bring up the main parent page. This will allow you to look at the “public” calendar for your organization, event list, handouts and other files.

Clicking on an event on the calendar brings up the details for that event, such as times, attendance requirements and equipment/uniform necessities. Clicking on “event list” puts all of the calendar information in a list form for easy printing. Note that if a calendar event is specifically assigned to your student, it may NOT show up on this calendar — check the “Student” calendar after entering the student’s ID number (see below).

When you enter your student’s ID NUMBER (your student’s school ID#) as a Student Area Password, another more detailed screen appears with even more options to view financial records, forms, and inventory records. Once you have first entered this ID number, you may create your own, unique password by clicking on the “keyhole” (Change Password) button.

You may also update the personal information — updating phone numbers and email addresses if they change — click the Personal Info button. NOTE: the email for your student needs to remain the address assigned to them by MSD of Wayne Township.

Any questions, please contact the band office at (317) 988-7211.

GRADING Assessment is the backbone of our band program at Ben Davis High School. To be a performer means the audience continually assesses one’s talents and skills. With this in mind, our students are held accountable in many ways to maintain our Tradition of Excellence. The musical skills of our students are rated with the use of a “Playing Test Rubric” . Music reading skills are assessed using a new program in which students are graded, via a rubric, while playing a short excerpt. Students are held responsible for daily spot checks or assignments. When you, as students and parents, make the decision to become a part of the Ben Davis Band Program, you are making a commitment to attend all rehearsals and performances.

All students and parents must sign the “Contact/Medical/Commitment Form Must be returned by the end of the first week of band (June 8, 2018)

BEN DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL BAND & GUARD GRADING SYSTEM

To more adequately evaluate each student's performance in marching and music; the following grading scale has been adopted. This system will be based on the student's daily performance and will be determined by playing tests. The student's attendance at rehearsals, performances, and contests will be graded and at any point, penalties will be subtracted from the playing grade. There are two basic types of grades within the music department.

Classroom Grades: Playing tests, written tests, daily assignments and spot checks. These are the daily and weekly functions of the bands. Performance Grades: The Ben Davis Bands are performance based classes. Several performances are scheduled throughout the year. These performances are major milestones for each group. An attendance grade will be recorded for each performance.

PERFORMANCE/REHEARSAL CONTRIBUTION GRADE Regular and punctual attendance is vital to the success of our band and guard. Points will be deducted for cutting class, tardy for a performance or competition attendance block, or unexcused absence from a rehearsal or performance.

ABSENCES REGARDING PARTICIPATION IN MAJOR PERFORMANCES Excused absences include certified illness or death in the immediate family. When in doubt about an upcoming absence, ask in advance for our official position. Unexcused absences include work and non-academic activities. Unfortunately, since performances cannot be made up, outside make up work will be given so that a grade can be made up. Even Excused Absences may be required to complete make up work for a grade.

FINAL GRADE The grading scale for band and guard is given below. Each student may determine his own grade throughout the marching and concert seasons by the guidelines below. A = 93-100 C+ = 77-79 A- = 90-92 C = 73-76 B+= 87-89 C- = 70-72 B = 83-86 D = 65-69 B- = 80-82 F = 0-64 In the past, 90% of the band has earned a letter grade of“ A”.

Ben Davis High School provides excellent training in music through extremely extensive work in instrumental performance technique, color guard/ movement, and the study of quality and varied musical literature. We expect our students to represent our school and department through diligent participation and good conduct at all times. Each member of the band has the ability to do their best.

Hazing/Bullying Policy

Hazing means forcing or requiring another person, regardless of that person’s consent, to perform an act that:

*creates a substantial risk of physical harm *substantially or seriously demeans or degrades any person; or *interferes with an person’s scholastic activities

Bullying is an intentional written, verbal or physical act that a student has exhibited toward another particular student in a pattern over time. The behavior causes either mental or physical harm to the other student and is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive educational environment for the other student.

At the heart of human rights is the belief that everybody should be treated equally and with dignity – no matter their circumstances. Lowering a person’s dignity as a rite of passage is unacceptable and is counter to the expectation of the band leadership.

Allegations of hazing and bullying are taken seriously by the band directors and will always be investigated. Possible responses by the band office could involve a student/parent/ teacher conference, benching of the instigators for performances, removal from the ensemble. If the situation warrants, students will be referred to the Ben Davis Administration for disciplinary action.

The Wayne Township Schools Anti-bullying Policy can be found at: http://www.wayne.k12.in.us/district/policy/pdf/c/Antibullying.pdf

PRIVATE STUDY - ONE ON ONE LESSONS

THE BEST KEY TO OUR FUTURE SUCCESS!

WHO ARE LESSONS FOR? Gifted students. Students that would like one on one instruction. Students in need of extra help. Students looking for more challenges. Students hoping to enhance their current knowledge of music. Students wishing to be better prepared for their music classes.

We are now signing students up for private lessons with outstanding local musicians. Different people teach different instruments. However, all of our private teachers are experts in his or her field. Their knowledge will be very valuable to each private student. Work in private lessons consists of fundamental skills development on the each student’s instrument, basic music fundamentals, solo and ensemble type literature, advanced techniques, instrument specific pedagogy. Lessons can be scheduled during regular band classes or before and after school. (Lessons are taught on site in the band facility.) Each lesson will last 30 minutes & once a week. The cost is $20.00 per lesson.

Students must remain in the lesson program for 5 or 6 weeks before major improvements will be noticed. Please avoid allowing a student to drop after only a couple of lessons. You get exactly out of a lesson as what you put into it. If a student works with the instructor and practices at home, amazing things will happen. These teachers are professionals. Please make sure payment arrangements are made and followed. The teachers work with the kids to make a living. If you are interested in taking private lessons, please talk to Mr. Karlin about finding a teacher and time.

You Are Part of the Concert The audience, as well as the musicians, are participants in every concert. When you participate in listening to the music, you are sharing this experience with others in the audience and with the musicians on stage. Formal concerts are much different from rock concerts or sporting events, and require you to know some specific concert manners. In order to make a concert enjoyable for everyone, here are some tips to remember:

Turn off your cell phone.

Texting, whispering to others, gesturing, or any other distracting behavior is disrespectful the performers and audience members.

Enter the auditorium quietly. Once you have been seated, be alert to activity on the stage as the musicians take their place for the concert. At an orchestra concert, the concert master begins by tuning the orchestra. The audience must be quiet while the orchestra tunes.

When the conductor enters, it is customary to applaud politely. Whistling, yelling, or screaming is not appropriate at any time before, during, or after a concert.

Never stand or move around while music is being performed. It distracts listeners around you, as well as the performers. If you must leave for any reason, wait until a piece is finished, and the audience is applauding. Also, return to your seat only between numbers.

It is impolite to talk, or even whisper, while the music is being performed. Listeners and performers are also distracted by sounds from programs, candy wrappers, jewelry and other objects. Remain still, and be thoughtful of others by talking or making sounds only between numbers.

It is impolite to wear hats or caps during a concert.

It is impolite to eat or drink refreshments during a concert.

Always say “excuse me,” if you must pass in front of someone while going to or from your seat.

If you must cough or sneeze while the music is being performed, always try to muffle the sound with a tissue or handkerchief. Wait until the piece is finished if possible.

Watch the conductor when the music stops to decide whether or not to applaud.

Some musical works have several parts or movements and the audience is expected to applaud only after all movements have been performed.

When leaving an auditorium, always return your seat cushion to the upright position to make it Easy for other to pass through the rows.

17

SOLO AND ENSEMBLE

What is Solo & Ensemble?

Solo & Ensemble is an opportunity for band members to perform as an individual or in a small group. Solo & Ensemble participation can be a very valuable, enriching experience. Solos are designed to be very challenging and will require a great deal of private help and personal preparation. Membership in an ensemble must be approved by a band director. Please let a director know if you are interested. Students that are in a chamber ensemble will be able to receive instruction from a band director before or after school. Each solo and ensemble event will be prepared in advance and performed for a judge. The judge gives you positive and negative comments about your performance. The goal of a judge is to help you continue to grow as a performer. They will provide you with feedback and provide a rating of your performance. This is not a competition. You do not compete with other students. Your judge will assign you ratings points that are added up to form an overall evaluation. You will receive a Gold, Silver, or Bronze rating and a medal. Family and friends are welcome to come listen to you perform.

When and where is it?

Ben Davis Band members will participate in Solo & Ensemble at a school in our area. You will play sometime between 8:00am and 3:00pm. We will not know exact times until late in January. The ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival is always on the last Saturday in January or the first Saturday in February each year. Students will need to find transportation to the festival. It is our hope that each parent will come to watch their son or daughter perform. This is a very positive day! Playing in chamber groups and/or preparing a solo for a festival are OUTSTANDING ways to better yourself.

18

The Ben Davis Pep Band is organized to promote spirit and enthusiasm in the student body and fans at home varsity basketball games, pep sessions, and community events. Students electing to be a part of the Pep Band are expected to be at all rehearsals and performances.

Rehearsals – Rehearsals will take place during regular band class during 1st semester after marching band season (for senior high only) and also just prior to the games. Information will be distributed in October or November.

Individuals not in the Pep Band MAY NOT enter the gym with the band members.

After games, please have rides ready. If you do not have a consistent ride to and from the games, please do not sign up.

New members to the Pep Band will be asked to purchase a Pep Band shirt. The cost will be approx. $10.

19

BEN DAVIS JAZZ BANDS

20

BEN DAVIS JAZZ BANDS

Jazz ensemble is distinct from other instrumental music classes offered in the band program in that improvisation is an integral part of the music making. Students will therefore be taught and asked to demonstrate a set of skills in addition to the preparation of high quality big band repertoire. These skills include:

Acquiring knowledge of applied music theory: the spelling of chords and scales and recognition of chord symbols as well as the recognition and understanding of standard forms and harmonic formulae.

Learning improvisational patterns and transcriptions of professional players’ solos to be applied to the students’ own improvised solos.

Developing fluency in Improvising over standard harmonic formulae such as the ii-V-I progression and standard forms such as the blues, “I Got Rhythm” changes and jazz standards.

Sight-reading appropriate big band repertoire at a high level of technical accuracy and musical expression. Ben Davis jazz ensembles will sight-read approximately 100 compositions per year.

Grading will be based on the combination of a musicianship grade and a participation grade. The musicianship grade will be worth 40% of the final grade and is derived from the quizzes, projects and examinations detailed below. The participation grade is based on attendance, punctuality, preparedness and the listening log and will be worth 60% of the final grade. Additional credit can amount to no more than 15% of a student’s grade.

Aspiring jazz musicians of the 21st century have easy access to a tremendous wealth of recorded music. It is necessary for the aspiring player to have listened to a wide breadth of improvised jazz arcing over its relatively short history. For this reason students will be required to keep a listening log that documents a minimum of one hour of analytical listening to recorded jazz per week. Analytical listening is crucial in that the student is striving to integrate knowledge from the recordings into her own improvising. Students will be provided with access to a library of historically significant recordings for this purpose, but are highly encouraged to create and continue to add to their own library of recordings.

Attending live performances may be the best and most inspirational way to learn the music. Students will be offered additional credit for attending live performances at such venues as The Jazz Kitchen, venues of the Indianapolis Jazz Festival or performances of university jazz groups. The Indianapolis area is a cosmopolitan region that supports a great deal of live jazz playing. The jazz ensembles often participate in university jazz festivals and clinics. Accomplished area jazz musicians regularly serve the bands as clinicians.

MARCHING GIANTS

Marching Band Requirements

 In order to be in the Ben Davis Marching Giants, you MUST be enrolled in a band or color guard class. This is a requirement.  Marching Band enrollment is being asked of all freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.  TO BE IN THE WIND SYMPHONY, MARCHING BAND IS A REQUIREMENT.  All sophomores, juniors and seniors in Concert Band, Jazz, Swing and Pep bands are required to be in Marching Band.  EXEMPTION: Students participating in a fall sport that directly conflicts with the band schedule, students with physical or health reasons preventing participation, and students with worship service conflicts will be enrolled in a concert band only.  All students must make a commitment to band for the following school year before school is out in the spring. A student may not start marching band - drop - and then be in another band.  SITTING OUT: We are always concerned with the health of our marching band members. If you are feeling ill and need to sit out during a rehearsal, please feel free to do so. However, if it becomes a regular occurrence, the directors will need to see a doctor’s note explaining in detail why you are not able to practice so that we can make needed adjustments in the drill.  ALTERNATES: Marching Band Members that do not earn a spot in the competitive show will be able to perform at all home football pregame performances and parades. All alternates are expected to attend the fundamental training during the beginning of every marching band practice but will be excused when work begins on the competitive show.  TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM CONTESTS: Although we do strongly believe that students should travel to and from band events as a group on school buses, we will honor parent requests related to schedule conflicts for other transportation. The following system must be followed for a student to leave a band function with a parent after a performance: 1. Turn in a note from parents to director. 2. Director will initial and approve. 3. Student then gives note to head chaperone for their bus.  When in doubt about an upcoming absence, ask in advance for our official position.  PHYSICAL EXAMS. Every band member is required to provide record of a recent physical exam each season. Marching Band Dress Code The image of a “Marching Giant” is a cut above the rest. In order to be great, we must sound, act, and LOOK great! In rehearsals…  All members must wear shirts. (No ladies in sports bras or men with bare chests.)  All members must wear pants or shorts. (Boxers do not count as shorts.)  Footwear is required. Sandals are never allowed.

In the uniform dressing area...  All members must be dressed in the required travel uniform in order to enter the uniform dressing ar- ea. Anyone not complying will be instructed to go home and will not be allowed to perform.

At Performances…  All members must remain in FULL uniform until a director gives you instructions as a group.  No jewelry is permitted while in uniform. Earrings and facial ornaments must be removed or covered.  Hair must be a natural color during marching season.  Hair must be above the uniform collar. A hair cut is preferred. Otherwise, braiding, a hair net or skull cap might become necessary.

SUMMER MARCHING BAND (For all students who are in the Marching Band Grades 9 –12)

Band Begins on MONDAY, JUNE 5, 2018 (FULL BAND).

ONLY MEMBERS IN GOOD BEHAVIORAL AND FINANCIAL STANDING ARE ELIGIBLE FOR A SPOT IN THE IN THE COMPETITIVE BAND THIS SEASON. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO ATTEND SUMMER BAND? Performance positions in the Ben Davis Band are earned through good attendance, continued improvement and musical development throughout our season. All members will have the same opportunity to earn a spot, full or partial, in the 2018 Competition Marching Show - these decisions are usually made during summer band. 1. Full spots (performance in the entire show) will be earned on ability, attitude, and attendance. 2. Partial spots will allow those in need of more development, time and instruction to prepare for more demanding material. Those students in partial spots could be called on at anytime to fill full-time spots, due to injury, or other factors.

ABSENCES Students should let a band director know in advance, in writing, of any upcoming absences. If a student is ill on the day of a rehearsal, please call the Ben Davis Band Office 15 minutes prior to the start of that rehearsal at (317) 988-7211. Students that are absent without notice will be called by telephone. Reporting absences does not mean automatic approval for the absences, but it does eliminate the need for the phone call. Judgments are seldom made as to the validity of an absence. PLEASE NOTE: WORK IS NOT CONSIDERED AN EXCUSED ABSENCE. TO REPORT AN ABSENCE CALL THE BAND OFFICE: (317) 988-7211

SUMMER SCHOOL There are no conflicts between summer school and summer band this year; therefore, we will be able to hold full Band Camp and full Production week!

PE II SUMMER BAND CREDIT Ben Davis High School now awards PE II class credit for summer marching band. You may pick up a form in the band office. Your summer band grade will count as PE II credit on your transcripts as long as you pass the swimming test. (Scheduled periodically by the Physical Education Department.)

TRANSPORTATION TO SUMMER BAND It is your responsibility to get to practices on time. If you do not have a ride, you must contact the Band Office (317-988-7211) immediately or talk to your section leader. We will aide in any way we can; although we cannot guarantee transportation assistance.

EMPLOYMENT Students should plan work and/or vacation schedules around the given dates. While the Band Department understands the need for students to secure part-time employment during the school year, employment WILL NOT be considered a legitimate excuse for absences from scheduled Band Department activities. Although it is recognized that the personal experience and values gained through part-time employment are rewarding, it must be remembered that a sense of dedication must remain for events of the school nature. The wise student who tries to satisfy both his employer and director will keep his employer informed of potential work schedule changes, which may be necessary, long before they occur. 24

UNIFORMS - INSTRUMENTALISTS The Ben Davis Band Uniform is a symbol of tradition and excellence and is to be worn with PRIDE!

With new uniforms comes a heightened need for uniform care. These new uniforms were very expensive, and need to last us for 10 years, like the last ones did. Please take care to treat these uniforms with the respect that they deserve. The Box Brigade Parents will help you to take care of them, but it is imperative that you do your part. These will define our look for many years. Please do your part to keep them in great shape.

BOX BRIGADE: All members of the band will be assigned to a Uniform Box where a parent will be responsible for keeping their uniform performance-ready. THE BOX BRIGADE PARENTS ARE VOLUNTEERS. PLEASE TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT AND KINDNESS!

IMPORTANT UNIFORM RULES:  When in public, you are to be in full uniform: Coat zipped and shako worn properly. No other hat or head bands may be worn. Guard must wear assigned warm-up.  No jewelry is to be worn with band/guard uniform. Expensive jewelry and other valuables should be left at home for safekeeping.  No fingernail polish or make up is to be worn while in uniform.  Shakos and plumes are easily damaged and must be handled with care. Please use caution!  No eating or drinking, with the exception of water, while in uniform.  No one will be allowed to get into a uniform box for anything without the permission and presence of an assigned Box Brigade Parent or staff member.  Charges will be assessed for lost or damaged uniform parts.  As a REPRESENTATIVE of Ben Davis High School and the whole Indianapolis Community, it is imperative that the behavior and appearance of Ben Davis Band members be beyond reproach. This includes a natural hair color. (NO “Bubble Gum Pink”, “Kool-Aid Red”, “Solar Yellow”, etc.) Acceptable appearance will be determined by the directors.

Planning for Success

Much expense has gone into every performance both inside and out. Imagine a wedding where the best man doesn't show up after all of the planning and expense. Yes, the wedding can go on, but many adjustments need to be made and much frustration takes place. All preparations for a concert or contest are made with everyone in place. When someone doesn't show up for a performance, everything is different and many adjustments need to be made, making it that much harder on everyone involved. Due to the group nature of our activity, it is imperative that EVERYONE is at EVERY performance. Design elements and music aspects such as balance and blend are based on the group performing as a whole. All members count on everyone being there at all performances to allow us to be successful.

COLOR GUARD

31

BEN DAVIS COLOR GUARD 2018-19

Cost Returning Members: $500 New Members: $600 Fair Share Costs Fair Share Costs Transportation Transportation Make-Up Make-Up Gloves Gloves Member shirt Member shirt Unitard Warm-up Class ALL guard members in grade 9-12 must be enrolled in a guard class at BD. Specific classroom & grading policies will be passed out to the students. Students in the class NOT fulfilling (completing the season’s rehearsal and performance requirements) may be subject to a frade of “F”.

Fundraising All students are encouraged and expected to participate in fundraising efforts to raise funds toward their Individual dues/fees. There will be multiple fundraising opportunities offered to students throughout the year. It is important that students participate in as many as possible/necessary so that expenses incurred from running a band and guard program can be off-set.

The guard may host multiple fundraisers during the year to go toward the general account. These may include, but are not limited to: bake sales, car washes, online sales, etc. These are in place to help lower the dues/fees of each student.

Attendance In order for the guard to reach its highest level of achievement, and for the performers and the show to progress in a timely fashion, a strict attendance policy must be enforced. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is MANDATORY. All conflicts must be pre-arranged and approved by the Director prior to the start of the season.

Because color guard and marching band is judged on uniformity and precision, please understand that any absence has a direct impact on the entire program. When students miss valuable information or choreography the group’s ability to portray uniformity is compromised/lessened.

For the safety of all students, directors must be aware of who is (and who is not) in attendance at rehearsals and performances. Therefore, parents/guardians will be required to provide written documentation of why a student was absent from rehearsal.

The director reserves the right (when necessary) to schedule additional rehearsals or amend the existing rehearsal schedule. Adequate time and notice will be given to the guard when changes/additions are needed.

Behavior, Positive Attitude and Teamwork In order for the group to move and function smoothly, it is of utmost importance that members of a team work from a standpoint of positivity. One member’s bad attitude can be responsible for negatively impacting the whole team. Likewise, a good attitude can be just as contagious and beneficial to the team. Students are to do their absolute best to maintain a positive attitude in the way they interact with each other, the staff and the parents as they work through rehearsals, travelling and the season overall.

Each member is responsible for impacting the team in a positive manner.

32

Everyone has an off day now and again, but if a student’s behavior begins to display a consistently negative outlook toward rehearsal, performance or other members and staff, this will be noted in the student’s classroom grade and a parent meeting may be necessary. If there is no improvement in the student’s behavior, this could lead to the student having a lesser role in the show or dismissal from the program.

Excused absences Excused absences include, but are not limited to contagious illness or fever, major family events (weddings, funerals), or religious obligations. All absences other than illnesses need to be pre-approved by the Director. The Director will determine the validity of all excused absences.

In the case of illness, if a student is absent from school due to illness, he or she will not be expected to attend rehearsal on that day. HOWEVER, to be granted an excused absence an email or phone call to the director from the parent/ guardian is still expected prior to the missed rehearsal. If a student is not contagious or running a fever, they are highly encouraged to attend rehearsal to watch and stay current with all information.

Unexcused absences Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to work, practice for other activities (unless pre-approved by the Director), professional concerts/plays, routine doctor appointments, vacations, lack of transportation, or homework. All unexcused absences may be reflected in the student’s allowance to perform and will be noted as part of his or her class grade. Repeat violations will lead to a lowering of the student’s participation in the show, and could lead to dismissal from the show and group entirely.

Tardiness If a student is going to be late to a rehearsal, it is the responsibility of the student and parent to contact a captain or director. If this is not done, the student may be required extra conditioning or other consequences at the director’s discretion. Avoid this by arriving early to the rehearsal site. Excessive tardiness will lead to a lowering of the student’s participation in the show, and could lead to dismissal from the show and group entirely.

Injury The Director should be notified immediately of any health or physical ailment. As with any physical activity, minor injuries can and probably will affect a few students. A doctor’s note should always be obtained in the case of a major physical injury. Students will be required to attend rehearsal while injured so they can take notes on changes and other information being given by staff.

Often, minor injuries such as sore muscles, bruises, or small cuts/abrasions will not affect a student’s ability to participate. If a student suffers a minor injury during a regular rehearsal, the severity of the injury will be assessed by the director and, dependent on the severity, that student may be permitted to sit out for ONE rehearsal. After one rehearsal, a doctor’s note is required. Students should report major injuries immediately so that proper medical attention may be given and parents/guardians can be called.

If an injury requires a student to miss a prolonged period of participation, the Director and designers of the program may need to adjust the student’s spot in the show. The guard cannot, for example, compete in major competitions with a “hole” in the show due to injury. In such a case, the show would be adjusted so that the show and performers can appear as prepared and polished as possible.

33

Conditioning Modern competitive color guard is a VERY physical activity. Performing a complete show requires a great deal of physical preparation from every student. Students will be required to participate fully in any callisthenic and stretching regimen prescribed for the guard by the Director or staff. Activities include, but are not limited to dance class, yoga, running and strengthening.

Students will be kept properly hydrated. During all summer and fall rehearsals, students are REQUIRED to bring a water jug to every rehearsal. Often, we will be outside where water fountains are not available.

Equipment All guard members are required to take care of their guard equipment and to keep it in good repair. Lost or excessively damaged equipment will be the student’s responsibility to repair or replace. For safety and liability purposes, guard members ONLY should be allowed to use color guard equipment. All guard members will be charged an initial equipment fee. This will cover the use of a rifle, a flag and a pole. Students will not own this equipment unless other arrangements for payment have been made.

Students who have been selected to be on the rifle line will be required to purchase their own rifle (about $38). Lost or damaged rifles are the responsibility of the member and must be replaced/repaired immediately so as not to impede valuable rehearsal time.

Sabers will be issued to students on the basis of individual achievement and trust as this piece of equipment requires a high attention to detail and is very expensive to repair/replace.

Rehearsal Attire Comfortable athletic clothes that allow the performer to move unhindered are required. All school rules regarding modesty apply—especially since the guard will be stretching and performing detailed dance positions—be sure all clothing fits correctly and is not revealing.

When the weather turns cooler, dressing in layers is more appropriate than wearing a large coat.

Shoes must be worn at all times, unless the guard is inside receiving a dance class. A light, flexible cross-training or running shoe is highly recommended. NEVER wear flip-flops or sandals to rehearsal. And, in general, any type of “slip on” shoe is not advisable.

The guard may be asked, for important rehearsals, to wear all black. This is so a look and feeling of uniformity can be achieved in the rehearsal setting. When the performers are dressed the same, it becomes much easier for the staff to deliver information and notes more effectively.

Uniform Our uniforms are the “wearable art” for our show. Great care must be taken by the performer to keep them in good condition and very clean. Also, it is our uniform that tells the world who we are: We Are Ben Davis! So, when travelling and appearing as a group (whether at home or at another show site), pride must be taken in how the uniform and the guard are presented to the public.

Warm-Ups will be worn while at shows/competitions. This includes the show shirt or a Ben Davis guard/band shirt, jacket and pants. When changing into uniform early, warm-ups must be worn OVER the uniform.

34

Hair and make-up designs will be determined by the director/designers. All students must comply with the look. Uniformity in the group’s appearance is part of how the guard is judged and evaluated. Please follow the instruction of the staff to their exact specifications.

Please maintain a hairstyle in your personal life that can be adapted to a uniform look during the performance season.

NO jewelry will be worn while in uniform. Do not eat or drink (other than water) while in uniform.

For safety reasons, and for reasons of uniformity and professionalism, members are encouraged to wear contact lenses rather than glasses for all performances.

In General… It takes a lot of pride to make a successful color guard—from the students, the parents and the staff. The pride to do what is right and correct for the group means, even when it’s not easy, rules must be followed for the good of the group and because we are putting the group’s success above our own individual wants and needs. The success of the BDCG depends on all of us!

Together, we can make the 2018-2019 guard season the best yet!

Rehearsals for the Marching Percussion Section will begin in the spring and continue through the end of the school year. These rehearsals are required for percussionists in marching band. See the band calendar at the back of this handbook for more information. Any student having a conflict with a performance or rehearsal should speak to their director as soon as possible BEFORE the event.

WHAT EXPENSES WILL PERCUSSIONISTS HAVE FOR THE YEAR? Each percussionist will have the same costs as seen on page 25-26 for Marching Band members, including the $120 instrument rental, as well as the cost of percussion equipment (see list above).

Percussionists not in Marching Band will be expected to pay the $40 per semester instrument rental fee as well as the cost for percussion equipment (see list above).

37

WINTER PERCUSSION

The Ben Davis Winter Percussion Ensemble provides students with a unique opportunity to learn, refine and perform a show completely based on percussion. The division Ben Davis enters in, the membership fee, and the rehearsal schedule are all unique to the show chosen on a specific year. Information will be available during late fall or early winter. This activity is open to any student in percussion. For more information contact Gary Rudolph.

ATTENTION!!!

Members of the Winter Guard and Winter Percussion will have additional Winter Guard and Winter Percussion fees to cover costs for uniforms, gloves, shoes, flags, props, etc. This fee is in addition to marching fees and fair share and must be paid by the end of January 2019.

Who are the Ben Davis Band Boosters?

The Ben Davis Band Booster Club is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to help promote instrumental music in the Wayne Township school system and to help ensure that the instrumental music department maintains the highest possible degree of efficiency. Membership is open to any band member, alumni, parent, or other person interested in the progress and development of the Ben Davis Band program.

What role do the Band Boosters play in the BD band program?

The Boosters assist the band in activities beneficial to the future of the band program. They lend moral support to the general instrumental music program in Wayne Township, and they provide for the Ben Davis Band members those things which are not provided by the school system. They provide meals and assist in the planning of various fund raising activities. Additionally, the Band Booster Club serves as a means of communication between parents of performing members and other interested parties. There are many different ways the Boosters achieve these goals, through group and individual efforts. Many times this involves physical work, such as helping build props, moving equipment, and carrying out improvements on the band semi-trailer and other equipment. Sometimes it is intellectual activity – many great ideas that have improved the way the band program operates have come from Booster brainstorming sessions. And sometimes, the best thing Boosters do is just being there and being available during band events, because things come up that are not anticipated and someone has to step up and solve a problem.

How do I become a Band Booster? The easiest way to become a Band Booster is to SHOW UP and SIGN UP. Your child will be bringing home information regarding the first scheduled band meeting of the year. Traditionally, the show theme, along with related music titles, will be introduced. This is a very exciting meeting for everyone, and you should plan on attending with your student. You will be able to complete the necessary paperwork for your child to join the band, and you will also have the opportunity to sign up as a Band Booster. You merely need to complete a registration form, along with a background check document (if you plan to work directly with the students). Ben Davis High School requires all volunteers working with students to complete a background check. If you are unable to attend this meeting, simply show up to our normal monthly meeting. We meet the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm in the band room. Any changes to the schedule will be posted on the Ben Davis Band Booster Facebook page. You can complete required paperwork at any of our meetings.

What if I want to be a Band Booster Officer? Elections are held every December for all positions. You merely need to speak with the Band Booster Secretary to ask that your name be added to the ballot. The Band Booster Board consists of 7 positions: President, two First Vice Presidents, two Second Vice Presidents, Secretary, and Treasurer. Each of these positions holds a different set of responsibilities, but we all work together as a team to ensure the needs of the band are being met.

39

What kind of things do the Band Boosters do?

Band Boosters have a wide array of responsibilities which include the following: Uniform Coordinator: fitting and issuing uniforms is the prime responsibility, along with overseeing the check in process after each game and assisting with uniform problems that come up during the season. Color Guard Coordinator: usually a parent of a member of the color guard who assists the Guard staff with equipment, water at performances, helping the guard members get ready for performance, and other details particular to the fall guard. Winter Guard Coordinator: Basically the same responsibilities as the Color Guard Coordinator, but for the Winter Guard. Pit Crew Coordinator: this group of energetic volunteers moves the sideline percussion equipment to and from performances and assists in setting up the instruments on the front sidelines for the actual performance. Crew Coordinator: although the students are primarily responsible for the loading and unloading of equipment, it is important that some adults are around to watch and lend a hand when needed. Hospitality Coordinator: this person coordinates providing water, soft drinks, hot chocolate, etc. for the band at football game performances. The Ben Davis Boosters also need chairmen for various committees involving hosting events and special fundraisers BOX BRIGADE

The Box Brigade is responsible for fitting the band into their uniforms and helping dress the students before each marching band performance. They are also responsible for repairing and (simple) cleaning of the uniforms. The Box Brigade also makes sure the uniforms are tidy and hung up properly after being used. The Box Brigade do a lot more than make sure the kids look “Uniform” on performance day. They are the key support system for our kids. Encouraging and lifting up the members all season long. If you would like to become a Box Brigade member, please contact Thomasina Denny ([email protected]) or Kim England ([email protected]) or [email protected]

EQUIPMENT CREW

The equipment crew is responsible for making sure all pit and drum line instruments and accessories are loaded onto the trailer before and after each contest. The crew is also responsible for moving all pit equipment on and off the field during all contest and home football games. The equipment crew needs I individuals who can be present at all contests and are able to move (sometimes heavy) equipment on and off the football field. If you would like to become a Crew member, please contact Ted Moore at [email protected],

PROP CREW

The prop crew designs and builds sets for the marching band field show as instructed by the directors. They are also the ones who prepare the props on contest day. The prop crew needs individuals that have the ability and time to construct and often paint the props.
