Journalism Awards Winners Press Release (PDF) TheNewYork Press Club, Inc. www.nypressclub.org | @NYPressClub FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Debra Caruso/DJC Communications [email protected] 212-971-9708 New York Times Wins New York Press Club Gold Keyboard Investigative Journalism Award for Series, "Breakdown." Times wins six awards in total; Newsday wins seven; The Associated Press and The Wall Street Journal win six apiece. Among tri-state broadcasters, News 12 shops in New York and New Jersey win 11 Press Club awards; WCBS Newsradio 880 wins seven. In a series of articles entitled “Breakdown,” The New York Times used the full gamut of multimedia tools to document how bigger purses, swelled by casino money, have corrupted horse racing across the nation. The series documented how money encouraged trainers to rely on pain medicine to race thousands of tired, injured and unfit horses, often with catastrophic results such as at Aqueduct in Queens where horse fatalities doubled after the opening of a nearby casino. Reporter Walt Bogdanich and a Times team that included Joe Drape, Rebecca Ruiz and Griff Palmer, did what no one had done before. When they were through, they had changed the face of thoroughbred racing across America through the analysis of contemporaneous accounts of no fewer than 150,000 races involving more than a million horses. Calls for track reform and regulation arose almost immediately as a result of the facts uncovered and presented in the “Breakdown” series. Superstorm Sandy Special Awards Because of the extraordinary nature of the coverage of Superstorm Sandy, special awards were created this year to acknowledge the exemplary journalism produced during that event. 21 such awards will be presented on June 10th, during the Press Club's awards ceremony. Nearly 500 entries were received in this year's competition, submitted by journalists publishing or broadcasting for 71 metro New York news organizations. An enduring tradition in New York media, the annual New York Press Club Awards For Journalism honor excellence in the craft by writers, reporters, editors, producers, shooters and multimediographers. Entries are considered in more than 20 categories of reporting. Judging is by prominent working journalists, former journalists and academics who are selected for their expertise in each category. Award presentations will take place Monday, June 10th, at the Press Club's Awards and Installation of Officers Dinner at Manhattan's Water Club. MORE INFORMATION about the Awards, the Awards Dinner (including reservations) and the New York Press Club can be found on the Club's Website: www.nypressclub.org. 2013 New York Press Club Awards For Journalism Winners Gold Keyboard Best Headline and Front Page (Magazine) "Breakdown" "The Next Four Years" Walt Bogdanich Josh Tyrangiel, Richard Turley The New York Times Bloomberg Businessweek Finalists: Best Headline and Front Page (Newspaper) "Honduras" "This Is Your Captain Freaking" Alberto Arce Deborah Pines The Associated Press The New York Post "Unlocked" Best Web Exclusive Content Sam Dolnick "A Fighting Chance" The New York Times Arnold Miller, Robert Cassidy, Christopher Ware, Peggy Bustamante, David Holland, John Williams Nellie Bly Cub Reporter Newsday.com staff "Education in the South Bronx" Newsday Patrick Wall DNAInfo.com New York Business Reporting (TV) "The Elf on the Shelf" Finalists: Carol Massar, Carole Zimmer, Courtney Chapman "FT Hedge Fund Survey & Report 2012" Bloomberg Broadcast Jonathan Kanterman Financial Times Business Reporting (radio) "Jobs Explosion, Jobs Implosion" "Rocky & Bullwinkle & The Cuban Missile Crisis" Carole Zimmer, Mark Mills, Al Mayers Julia Wetherell Bloomberg Broadcast WNYC-FM Business Reporting (Internet) Rev. “Consider the Source” A Resource Guide to Liberal, Conservative and Nonpartisan Periodicals 30 East Lake Street ∙ Chicago, IL 60601 HWC Library – Room 501 312.553.5760 ver heard the saying “consider the source” in response to something that was questioned? Well, the same advice applies to what you read – consider the source. When conducting research, bear in mind that periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) may have varying points-of-view, biases, and/or E political leanings. Here are some questions to ask when considering using a periodical source: Is there a bias in the publication or is it non-partisan? Who is the sponsor (publisher or benefactor) of the publication? What is the agenda of the sponsor – to simply share information or to influence social or political change? Some publications have specific political perspectives and outright state what they are, as in Dissent Magazine (self-described as “a magazine of the left”) or National Review’s boost of, “we give you the right view and back it up.” Still, there are other publications that do not clearly state their political leanings; but over time have been deemed as left- or right-leaning based on such factors as the points- of-view of their opinion columnists, the make-up of their editorial staff, and/or their endorsements of politicians. Many newspapers fall into this rather opaque category. A good rule of thumb to use in determining whether a publication is liberal or conservative has been provided by Media Research Center’s L. Brent Bozell III: “if the paper never met a conservative cause it didn’t like, it’s conservative, and if it never met a liberal cause it didn’t like, it’s liberal.” Outlined in the following pages is an annotated listing of publications that have been categorized as conservative, liberal, non-partisan and religious.

  • The State of the News: Texas
THE STATE OF THE NEWS: TEXAS GOOGLE’S NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE JOURNALISM INDUSTRY #SaveJournalism #SaveJournalism EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Antitrust investigators are finally focusing on the anticompetitive practices of Google. Both the Department of Justice and a coalition of attorneys general from 48 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico now have the tech behemoth squarely in their sights. Yet, while Google’s dominance of the digital advertising marketplace is certainly on the agenda of investigators, it is not clear that the needs of one of the primary victims of that dominance—the journalism industry—are being considered. That must change and change quickly because Google is destroying the business model of the journalism industry. As Google has come to dominate the digital advertising marketplace, it has siphoned off advertising revenue that used to go to news publishers. The numbers are staggering. News publishers’ advertising revenue is down by nearly 50 percent over $120B the last seven years, to $14.3 billion, $100B while Google’s has nearly tripled $80B to $116.3 billion. If ad revenue for $60B news publishers declines in the $40B next seven years at the same rate $20B as the last seven, there will be $0B practically no ad revenue left and the journalism industry will likely 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 disappear along with it. The revenue crisis has forced more than 1,700 newspapers to close or merge, the end of daily news coverage in 2,000 counties across the country, and the loss of nearly 40,000 jobs in America’s newsrooms.

Judge, Father Mychal (1933-2001) by Linda Rapp Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2006 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Father Mychal Judge devoted his life to the care and service of others, including those marginalized by society. He ministered to AIDS patients and was a chaplain for Dignity, an organization of gay and lesbian Roman Catholics. He was also a chaplain for the Fire Department of New York City and died in the line of duty at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Father Mychal Judge's parents, Michael Judge and Mary Fallon, were both from County Leitrim, Ireland, but only met and fell in love on board the ship that was bringing them to a new life in the United States in the 1920s. They married and settled in Brooklyn, where Mr. Judge ran a neighborhood grocery store. Mychal Judge, their second child and only son, was born on May 11, 1933, two days before the arrival of his twin sister, Dympna. Judge was given the name Robert Emmett at baptism. He would adopt a new one upon entering the Franciscan order. When Judge was only a small child, his father fell gravely ill and was hospitalized for three years. Since children were not allowed as hospital visitors, Judge and his sisters were limited to exchanging waves with their father when he could come to the window of his room. The senior Judge died when his son was six. Throughout his life, Mychal Judge regretted that he had "never called anyone 'Dad'" or gotten to know his father.

(“Charter”) as follows: PRELIMINARY STATEMENT 1. Plaintiffs Roma Torre, Kristen Shaughnessy, Jeanine Ramirez, Vivian Lee and Amanda Farinacci are distinguished and award-winning on-air talent on Charter’s New York One (“NY1”) news channel covering the New York metro area. They have collectively worked at NY1 for more than 100 years – devoting their careers and dedicating their lives to New York journalism and the success of NY1. Despite these tremendous efforts and their indisputable skill, NY1 has blatantly marginalizedDeadline them and cast them aside in favor of younger women and men, in a transparent effort to reshape the appearance of the on-air talent. 2. Sadly, it is hardly a novel occurrence that the media fails to showcase professional older women in on-air positions, instead favoring younger women and men. The New York Times recently published an article titled “The Fight to Be a Middle-Aged Female News Anchor: Case 1:19-cv-05708 Document 1 Filed 06/19/19 Page 2 of 62 There is no fighting sexism on television without fighting age discrimination along with it,”1 which highlighted the experiences female television journalists have had to – and continue to – face in the workplace.
