NICOLE CAMPOS Nicole Campos began playing the piano at a very young age, and since has learned to play the guitar, drum set, and ukulele on her own. In fourth grade, Nicole’s music teacher brought a few violins to her class to try out, and she eagerly joined the school orchestra the following year playing violin. When four years old, Nicole was introduced to the Arizona Study Program (ASP), a music theory and piano performance- focused program that involves annual performance evaluations and music theory exams. She will complete her final year (level 12) of ASP next April. She has been a student in the Renaissance Gifted and Music Program at Esperanza Elementary, and has attended NAU Curry Summer Music Camp, primarily as a violinist, for four years. She has been selected for Arizona’s Elementary and Junior High All-State Orchestras and in most recent years, Arizona High School All-Regional Orches- tra as a first violinist. Nicole is currently the concertmaster for North Valley Youth Orchestra and a first violinist in the NVSO adult orchestra. She is also the concertmaster of the BASIS Phoenix Upper School Orchestra, and is co-president of the BASIS Phoenix chapter of Tri-M Music Honor Society. Nicole will pursue a double major in music performance and biological sciences. She wants music to be an integral part of her life as she transitions into college and adulthood. At some point, she would love to additionally pursue a degree in music education, to one day inspire students in the same way that her music teachers have inspired her.

SUZANNE JOHNSEN Suzanne Johnsen is a very active member of the classical music community in Arizona. She is assistant music director for the San Tan Community Performing Arts, coordinator for the Arizona Repertory Orchestra, and a founding member of the Arizona Chamber Music Experience. Suzanne performs with North Valley Symphony Orchestra, The Arizona Wind Symphony, in the pit orchestra for Valley Youth Theater, and with numerous local chamber groups. Suzanne has traveled with American Concert Band to the Caribbean and South America, and has also toured in Europe, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia with other organizations. She additionally plays chamber music in California during the summer months. When Suzanne is not playing music, she is a veterinarian, and owns Van Aken Pet Hospital in Phoenix.

page 9 Biographies FRANK ISLAS Frank Islas has been playing the violin since he was 12 years old. He joined ProMusica Arizona Youth Orchestra in north Phoenix at age 13, and the following year was accepted to PMAZ’s Adult Orchestra, under the direction of Kevin Kozacek. In 2012, he was accepted into North Valley Symphony Orchestra, where he’s been playing for six years. Frank has performed with the Glendale Sanctuary Choir, West Valley Youth Orchestra, and a number of different local organizations. He enjoys playing in small chamber ensembles with friends, and loves to play solo music. Frank currently attends Glendale Community College, with plans to transfer to ASU to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering. He interns in a program at GCC funded by a NASA grant, currently leading a team to build and send a payload into space to record atmospheric sensor data. He serves as Treasurer of the Engineering Club at GCC, where he mentors students in becoming successful in their college careers. Frank plans to double major in Chemical and Electrical Engineering, and enter the music program at ASU.

NORA JOHNSTON Nora Johnston was born in Grand Canyon, AZ, and grew up in Lakeside, AZ. She attended Northern Arizona University, obtaining her BA Degree in Elementary Education in 1995. She has taught all grades from first through sixth in Prescott, Lakeside, Whiteriver, and Phoenix. Currently, she is teaching fourth grade at Painted Rock Academy in Phoenix. Nora’s mother, an experienced pianist, organist, violinist, and violist, started giving her piano lessons at age three, and exposed Nora to a variety of music genres, concerts, and operas. At age nine, Nora started playing clarinet, with her mother as coach and accompanist, and began playing piano and organ duets at church. Nora also studied private piano with an accomplished pianist, Kathleen Reed. Nora actively accompanies local choral groups and soloists, and plays in churches and chamber groups in Phoenix, including Arizona Chamber Music Experience. Career highlights include accompanying Dr. Edgar Stone at NAU faculty recitals, accompanying a community chorus in Flagstaff under the direc- tion of Kurt Weinzinger, accompanying Master Chorale in Prescott under the direction of James Klein, playing piano or clarinet in White Mountain Symphony, Flagstaff Symphony, and now North Valley Symphony Orchestra. She loves spending time with her children and grandchildren in Phoenix, Idaho, and Alaska. Favorite pastimes include reading, writing, cooking, sewing, giving attention to her cat and black lab, and taking road trips with her husband, Rob, in the summer months. page 10 A Letter from the President

Thank you for joining North Valley Symphony Orchestra (NVSO) for our “Concertos and More” concert!

Tonight’s concert truly embraces our mission: to provide skilled and aspiring musicians of all ages the opportunity to learn, rehearse, and perform exceptional orchestral music, fostering music appreciation and engagement among members of the North Valley community. This evening you will get to hear a veterinarian perform an English Horn concerto, a college student who came up through our youth programs perform a violin concerto, and one of our clarinetists showcasing her piano skills! These three soloists are all members of our NVSO community, and we are so proud of their accomplishments. Having the opportunity to work with fellow musicians from all walks of life, to learn, rehearse, and perform exceptional orchestral music is an enriching and rewarding experience. NVSO provides that opportunity for many musicians who might not other- wise be able to pursue their passion for music.

In addition to showcasing members of the adult orchestra, tonight will also feature the winner of our annual Summerford Violin Concerto Competition. Each year, students enrolled in our youth programs are given the opportunity to apply and audition for this competition. The application process includes letters of recommendation and essays, in addition to performing the selected concerto for a panel of judges from outside NVSO. The competition winner is presented with a new violin handcrafted by Mr. Jody Summerford, a local luthier and valued partner and friend of NVSO. Each violin takes approxi- mately 100 hours to craft! NVSO is extremely thankful to Mr. Summerford for his continued support of NVSO and our youth programs. We’re so excited to have you hear this year’s winner, Nicole Campos.

We hope you enjoy this evening’s performance and will join us in May for our “Best of Broadway and Opera” concert in partnership with the Las Vegas Master Singers. It should be quite a show!
