Ghost Culture with the Grim Reaper
Ghost Culture with the Grim Reaper Music | Bittles‘ Magazine Some people say that there is no good music released in January and early February. But, as we all know, some people talk shit! It is true that no one is bothering to tour, and hot new releases are thin on the ground. Yet, there is still some wonderful music out there to be found. By JOHN BITTLES This month alone we have Ghost Culture, the sound of New Order sitting alone at an acid house party, the glacial ambience of The Notwist, some experimental pop from Panda Bear, swirls of melodic techno from John Tejada and the deep house delights of Lake People, to name but a few. So get off that exercise bike, take a break from your jogging, indulge yourself with a kit kat and get unfit with some top music that is full-fat and startlingly good. This month we will start with the dulcet tones and strange aural experiments of part-time Animal Collective member Panda Bear. The evocatively titled Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper is out now and sees our protagonist leaning ever more towards the realms of electronic pop. The record explores a strange and slightly sinister world which manages to be simultaneously welcoming and alien-sounding in its epic quest to entertain. Processed vocals and weird and wonderful noises spring out of nowhere to constantly keep the listener on their toes while the LP positively brims with an intriguing sense of otherness that sucks you right in. Surprisingly funky and fun in places, this will find favour with anyone who is tired of the rigid structures, throwaway choruses and one-dimensional song structures of traditional pop. -

Breakbeats, Pop Hooks & Melodies
Breakbeats, Pop Hooks & Melodies: June’s New Albums Reviewed Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world With the Brexit referendum looming most people in the UK are asking themselves, ‚How would a separation from the rest of Europe affect the price of vinyl?‘ The simple answer is that the price will rise! The main reason for this is that most of the pressing plants are based on the mainland, (and that’s not even figuring in having to pay import duty on those desired new 12inches on Kompakt, Workshop or Ostgut Ton). A convincing argument if ever there was one for any music fan in the British Isles to vote REMAIN. By JOHN BITTLES But, enough of politics! This week we have reviews of great new albums by Lone, New Order, James K, Lawrence, Jessy Lanza, Kris Wadsworth, Stabil Elite and more. So, without further ado,let us begin… After the gorgeous house tones of Reality Testing, electronic maverick Lone AKA Matt Cutler makes a welcome return to the album format with the rave and breakbeat inspired Levitate. Out now on R&S Records, the album is a short but sweet listening experience. Containing nine tracks with a total running time of just over 30 minutes, no one could ever accuse Levitate of outstaying its welcome. Apparently inspired by aural hallucinations caused by a severe fever, the album is a fast, frantic 90s inspired blast. Yet, Levitate never resorts to bland programming, or resting on the laurels of a 4/4 beat, as each and every track contains both musicality and warmth. -

March 10, 2021 For Immediate Release Rochelle Jordan Announces New Album, Play With the Changes, Out April 30th on Young Art Records Watch Video for New Single, “NEXT 2 YOU” (Photo Credit: Paige Strabala) "The globe-spinning jack swing of [‘ALL ALONG’] is instantly irresistible. Coupled with ‘GOT EM,’ it feels like a genuine reawakening for the LA-via-Toronto artist." — The FADER “[‘GOT EM’]’s UK garage bassline lightly evokes Daniel Bedingfield's 2001 classic 'Gotta Get Through This' and serves to showcase Jordan's simultaneously robust and feathery voice.” — Billboard "[’GOT EM’] might be her most devastating dance floor track to date... Jordan is the star here, her complex vocal harmonizations demonstrating uncanny range and songwriting ability.” — Resident Advisor Los Angeles-based artist Rochelle Jordan announces her new album, Play With the Changes, out April 30th on TOKiMONSTA’s Young Art Records, and today presents new single/video, “NEXT 2 YOU.” For Jordan, a desire for sonic expansion has long been embedded into her fusion of futuristic and ancestrally soulful R&B. To hear a Rochelle Jordan song is to absorb a blend of sampledelic 90s pop, vintage UK house and garage, 31st century electronic bangers, airy late night ballads, and progressive hip-hop. On Play With the Changes, Jordan showcases not just her own personal evolution, but a path to pushing sound forward. Produced by KLSH, Machinedrum, and Jimmy Edgar, the album presents her as a modern heir in a lineage of powerhouse vocalists with style and imagination: everyone from Whitney Houston to Celine Dion, Aaliyah to Amerie, Kelis to Mariah Carey. -
