They have claimed at least one win in each of their last four qualifying campaigns, the most spectacular at the expense of Switzerland (2-1) in Zurich in a 2010 FIFA World Cup tie. Their most memorable UEFA European Championship performance dates back 50 years to a remarkable 2-1 victory against the Netherlands in Rotterdam that put them into the quarter-finals, where they lost to Denmark – although only after a replay. EURO pedigree Matches played Overall: P99 W6 D9 L84 F38 A276 Final tournament: P0 W0 D0 L0 F0 A0 Qualifying: P99 W6 D9 L84 F38 A276 Luxembourg made an audacious start to the UEFA European Championship when, having sat out 1960 qualifying, they stunned the Dutch in their first ever tie in the competition in 1963. A side spearheaded by perhaps the country's finest ever player, Louis Pilot, came close to reaching the following year's final tournament, drawing home and away against Denmark before being edged out 1-0 in a replay. That is, by a distance, as close as Luxembourg have come. It was another 50 games before they next managed a qualifying victory, winning 1-0 in Malta in the EURO '96 preliminaries. They triumphed in the reverse fixture too, also securing a famous victory against eventual group winners the Czech Republic; Luxembourg finished with ten points, still only enough for fifth in the six-team section. They have ended bottom ever since. They performed creditably in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying, though, restricting France to a pair of 2-0 wins, drawing with Belarus, and defeating Albania 2-1. Memorable EURO matches 13/10/2007: Belarus 0-1 Luxembourg, UEFA EURO 2008 qualifying Fons Leweck's 95th-minute strike gave Luxembourg a first competitive win in 12 years. 07/06/1995: Luxembourg 1-0 Czech Republic, EURO '96 qualifying A late Guy Hellers goal earned victory over a side that would finish runners-up at EURO '96. 30/10/1963: Luxembourg 2-1 Netherlands, 1964 UEFA European Championship qualifying Tied at 1-1 after the first leg, two Camille Dimmer goals took Luxembourg through to the last eight. Did you know? Luxembourg's first ever international was a 4-1 friendly defeat by France in October 1911. *Last updated 07/01/14 3 UEFA EURO 2016 - Qualifying draw Monday 24 February 2014 - 12.00CET (12.00 local time) Press kit Palais des Congrès Acropolis, Nice Luxembourg - Coach profile Luc Holtz Date of birth: 14 June 1969 Nationality: Luxembourger Playing career: Red Boys Differdange, FC Avenir Beggen, Etzella Ettelbruck Coaching career: Etzella Ettelbruck, Luxembourg Under-21s, Luxembourg • Holtz started his career with Red Boys Differdange, a club which today is part of successful outfit FC Differdange 03. • A creative playmaker with a keen eye for goal, Holtz moved to Avenir Beggen in 1992 where he went on to win the domestic double in 1993 and 1994. He was chosen as Luxembourg's footballer of the year in 1993. • Played until 2008 when, aged 38, he finished his career at Etzella having gone there from Beggen in 1999 to take over as player-coach. • Led Etzella to promotion to the top flight in 1999, his first season in charge. Lifted the cup two years later but was relegated in 2002, only to bounce back immediately. Proceeded to reach the cup final in 2003 and 2004, although both ended in defeat. • Having earned 55 caps for Luxembourg, he accepted an offer to coach the U21 national side in 2008. He was then handed the reins of the senior team following the resignation of Guy Hellers in August 2010. 4 UEFA EURO 2016 - Qualifying draw Monday 24 February 2014 - 12.00CET (12.00 local time) Press kit Palais des Congrès Acropolis, Nice Luxembourg - For the leaders of the national associations and of UEFA, there is no such thing as a quiet period either. This year, for example, UEFA’s member associations first had the delicate task of deciding who UEFA’s president would be for the next four years. Just a few months later, in April, it will be up to the UEFA Executive Committee to decide where EURO 2012 will take place. 2007 is also likely to be a crucial time in relations between European football and the European Union.

  • 031129 156 UEFA Jubilee
Media Release Date: 29/11/2003 Communiqué aux médias No. 156 Medien-Mitteilung UEFA officially launches its Golden Jubilee Year European Football Union to celebrate its 50 year anniversary on 15 June 2004 UEFA today officially launched its Jubilee Year within the framework of the Final Draw for UEFA EURO 2004™. UEFA was founded at a meeting in Basle, Switzerland, on 15 June 1954, during the 1954 World Cup. Delegates representing 30 countries attended that meeting in the Hotel Euler. Shortly afterwards, Ebbe Schwartz of Denmark was named UEFA’s first president. Just one year later, the new UEFA fulfilled one of its most urgent priorities by introducing the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (the first five editions of which were won by Real Madrid), thanks largely to journalists from the L’Equipe newspaper. Another objective was met when the first edition of the European Championship was held in 1960. UEFA’s destiny in the decades since then has been largely mirrored by the evolution of these and other competitions. This story, through the subsequent presidencies of Gustav Wiederkehr (Switzerland), Artemio Franchi (Italy), Jacques Georges (France) and Lennart Johansson (Sweden), is traced in a new book to be published on the occasion of the Jubilee UEFA Congress in Cyprus in April 2004. The commemorative books are one of many special Jubilee activities planned during the year 2004. UEFA’s exact 50th birthday, on 15 June, will fall during UEFA EURO 2004TM in Portugal, and will be marked accordingly. To mark UEFA’s Golden Jubilee, each of the 52 member associations has been invited to nominate its most outstanding player of the past 50 years.
