2 Welcome Back Principal Randazzo! The Madeleine Choir School is pleased to announce that Mrs. Megan Randazzo has accepted the position of Aca- demic Principal. Principal Randazzo’s academic preparation and her leadership experience in recent years positions her for great success in her new role at the Choir School.

“In addition to her magnetic and contagious personality, Megan is a highly motivated, well-organized and hard- working professional,” said MCS Pastoral Administrator, Gregory Glenn. “While her experience in the Canyons School District has been an opportunity for exponential professional growth, she has a strong and unwavering commitment to the mission of the Choir School and to all Catholic Schools in Utah as a former teacher at MCS and alumna of Cosgriff and Judge Memorial. Megan’s presence at the Choir School has been missed and we are extremely excited to have her back.”

Randazzo has already begun her preparations and re-established her presence on the MCS campus this summer as she steps into this leadership role that includes the recruitment and retention of highly qualified teachers, academic support for all learners through differentiated instruction, ongoing development of aca- demic rigor through curriculum review and design, strengthen- ing intervention programs, a school-wide behavioral plan, and continuing the development of a culture of social and emotional learning. “Mrs. Randazzo has an amazing skill set that we see in so many successful educators. The Choir School community was heart-broken when she left MCS in 2012,” exclaimed Sean Macklyn, MCS Parent. “Our whole family was thrilled to hear that she is returning in this leadership role. The Choir School means so much to our entire family, and I know it is special to many other families as well. Principal Randazzo has a remark- able ability to connect with students and parents, alike, as well as faculty and staff. That is very impactful, especially when you are talking about the education of your children.”

If you know Principal Randazzo, then you know of her commitment to education, including her interest in her own continued professional learning. You would also know that she brings a contagious energy everywhere she goes, whether it be activities and adventures with family, traveling, entertaining, yard games, or just relaxing with a mar- garita or glass of wine with friends. A couple of things you might not have known about Megan is that she has huge soft spot for musicals, and if there is a dance floor nearby you will likely find her there.

Please join us in welcoming Megan and her husband, Jimmy, and their children Ruby (4) and James (2), back to MCS! - Matt Kitterer, Director of Advancement

Choirs at the Cathedral The various choirs at the Madeleine Choir School add a beautiful element to the liturgy throughout the academic school year. The choir sings not only on Sundays at the 11:00 AM Mass, but also throughout the week at the 5:15 PM daily Mass Monday through Thursday. All are welcome to lift their voices to the Lord alongside the choirs in the highest prayer we can offer at Mass.

3 The Cathedral of the Madeleine: A Year of Celebration First-time visitors to the Cathedral of the Madeleine are usually astonished by its exquisite beauty, but long-term parishioners have an advantage. They experience an ever-changing beauty throughout the year: the summer sunlight reflecting through the stained-glass windows to create a rainbow of colors on the murals or, in the winter gloom, the candlelight flickering in the shadows to make the images appear to be alive, moving in rhythm with the flames.

The cathedral has not always looked the way it does today. The original cathedral, completed in 1909 under the first bishop of the diocese, Bishop Lawrence, had a very simple interior: pale green walls with white pillars and white trim framing the windows. Between 1916 and 1918, his successor, Bishop Joseph S. Glass, C.M., trans- formed those blank walls with colorful murals and hand- Ash Wednesday - Father Martin imposing the ashes carved woodwork creating an elaborate interior typical of Gothic- churches. By the early 1990s, the interior of the cathedral was in desperate need of extensive repairs. Under the leadership of Bishop William K. Weigand, the seventh bishop of the diocese, the cathedral was completely restored between 1991 and 1993.

This year, 2018, marks the anniversary of two of these significant events in the life of the cathedral. The 100th anniver- sary of the renovation completed in 1918 under Bishop Glass, C.M. and the 25th anniversary of the complete restoration and seismic retrofit of the cathedral in 1993 under Bishop William K. Weigand.

To commemorate these two anniversaries, the cathedral tour guides, Kevin and Elizabeth Buehler, Colleen E. Gudreau, and Martha A. Seiner, created “The Cathedral of the Madeleine: A Year of Celebration,” a book of photographs high- lighting the exquisite beauty of the windows, the murals, and the wood carvings in unbelievable detail as well as captur- ing community celebrations throughout the liturgical year.

This book will be available for purchase beginning in November. We, the authors hope you will enjoy this book as much as we enjoyed creating it. - Colleen Gudreau & The Cathedral of the Madeleine: A Year of Celebration Team; photo credits: Kevin Buehler

The Second Joyful Mystery: The Visitation The VIII Station of the Cross - Simon Helps Jesus Carry the Cross 5 Bishop’s Dinner, Pastoral Congress & Youth Congress

Throughout the month of September, there have been a multitude of all-diocesan events, pulling in people from all corners of the di- ocese. On September 6th, the 15th Annual Bishop’s Dinner was an incredible success. Attendees heard from the 4th Bishop of the Di- ocese, Bishop William K. Weigand, the bishop who oversaw the restoration of the Cathedral. People of all faith backgrounds in Salt Lake City came together to support the Cathedral, a beautiful and historic landmark to all members of the Salt Lake City community.

Saturday, September 15th, both lay and clergy of the diocese came together for the Pastoral Congress, and for the first time, the Di- ocesan Youth Congress. The Youth Congress allowed teens from all parishes to come together for Eucharistic Adoration and fel- lowship, while the Pastoral Congress outlined the Pastoral Plan that will be enacted for the next five years. The priorities of the plan include faith formation, vocations, stewardship, Eucharist and Catholic identity, and the dignity of the human person. Please join us in prayer that we each may live our baptismal call as missionary disciples, sharing the Good News.

Prayer for the Pastoral Plan

Good and gracious God, We, the Catholic people of Utah, come before You in prayer as we chart our course for our future. We believe in a living faith grounded in an- cient Scripture and our sacred Tradition. Open us to the needs of our people and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We celebrate through worship and prayer. Guide our sharing of the Gospel of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, with our families, our parishes and our communities.

We live in the unity of our rich diversity. Allow the faith we share to overcome barriers and challenges that separate and isolate us. Trusting in the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, and of Saint Mary Magdalene, the Patroness of our diocese, may our efforts lead to a deeper unity within our com- munity, reflecting the loving unity that is the Holy Trinity. In the name of Jesus Christ, Lord of the past present and future, we ask to believe, celebrate, and live His redeeming love in Utah. Amen.

Youth & Young Adult Ministry Ministries at the Cathedral are officially in full swing with a new sea- son. Both youth and young adult ministries invested time to know each other in creative ways--a breakfast/game night and axe throwing outing, respectively--to share in fellowship with people in the same stage of life. If you’re interested in being part of either of these growing groups, please contact Ali Martinez at [email protected].
