Scanlan downstairs had to be destroyed because some kind of reinforcing beam or pillar had to be installed...He was exhumed. That was one of my strange jobs in the restoration process, to oversee his removal from the crypt. No one up here, in the rectory house, would do that. [Laughter] So I was given the job. When he was taken out of the marble sarcophagus, his casket had completely decayed. Not completely, but it had pretty much been destroyed. So his body was removed and placed on a noble stretcher, and I was instructed to go down and look at it. I remember he was inviolate. His body was all present. His skin was there. He looked very much like a dried flower, that kind of appearance. He was all intact. He had his crozier and his mitre, the old pontifical sunburst gloves, his hands were folded. In the late nineteenth century Lawrence J. Scanlan, the first bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake, virtually drew this Gothic cathedral out of the western wilderness. A strong private man of faith, he constructed the solid durable building against seemingly insurmountable odds and designated to his successors the work of decorating it and, later, restoring and preserving it for posterity.

The "Age of Scanlan" witnessed the vision of a Catholic missionary ripen into reality. The young priest dreamed of a cathedral that would be the mother church of his vast pastorate, providing that same protection, guidance, and inspiration that Old World cathedrals traditionally offered their peoples. It would stand as a tribute to the missionary efforts that preceded his own in the American West, beginning as far back as 1540 when the expedition of the Spanish explorer Coronado made its dramatic thrust into the Southwest and, later, when the Franciscan missionaries Escalante and Dominguez penetrated into the heart of the Great Basin with an eye to mission settlement as well as an overlaid route. Scanlan's cathedral would unite his once-isolated territory with its fellow pioneer missions in Boise, Helena, Cheyenne, and Denver and symbolize its attachment to the Archdiocese of and, beyond that, to the Holy See itself in Rome. It would form the Catholic response to the economic, social, and political environment at the turn of the century and to the swell of immigration sweeping through the country. It would immortalize the spirit and the story of the Utah The Diocese of Salt Lake City joyfully announces the ordination mines and the miners who would help to build it. This year the senior priests

of our diocese are requesting we join together in praying the Pentecost Novena as a way of bringing us back together in our parishes and uniting us in prayer for an end to this pandemic. In the Pentecost Novena which starts on May 14,

we seek to attract the Holy ROSARY RALLY / CRUZADA DEL ROSARIO Spirit so that our own hearts may be enkindled with 8:30 AM THURSDAY, MAY 13—IN THE PLAZA God’s love and that we may spread this holy fire to 6:00 PM THURSDAY, MAY 13—IN THE CATHEDRAL others. We also ask to be filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially wisdom and fortitude to deal with the challenges of this pandemic. By way of background, a novena is a popular devotion of the Church. It is a prayer for a particular intention while seeking the intercession of a favorite saint or preparing for a special day within the Church’s liturgical year. The word “novena” is Latin for “nine”, hence the prayers of a novena are said for nine consecutive days. Novenas are scheduled to begin 9 days prior to the feast day of a saint or special day. The prayers of a novena typically consist of an opening prayer, a repeated prayer for the intention, a request for the intercession of a saint, and an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. In all, the NOVENA INDULGENCE. The Enchiridion of Indulgences notes, prayers are short and take just 10 or 15 minutes to pray each day. “A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who devoutly take While most people pray a novena in the privacy of their part in the pious exercise of a public novena before the feast of homes, sometimes parishes offer a weekly novena. These Christmas or Pentecost or the Immaculate Conception of the devotions may include a hymn or two, repeated prayers and Blessed Virgin Mary.” Here the Church is emphasizing the novena litanies, and a time of quiet prayer, reflection, and veneration in is a pious spiritual exercise to bolster the faith of front of a holy image or the Blessed Sacrament. the individual, and that the individual should be The origin of the novena in our Church’s spiritual treasury is truly devout, always remembering the goodness hard to pinpoint. Nine days later, the Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles at Pentecost. The ancient Romans celebrated nine days of prayers to avert the ‘wrath of the gods’, at the prediction of special solar events, and as the mourning period for a loved one. Since novenas were already part of Roman culture, it is possible that Christianity “baptized” this pagan practice.
