Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City DIOCESE OF SALT LAKE CITY 2021 LITURGICAL CALENDAR LECTIONARY CYCLE YEAR B – WEEKDAY CYCLE YEAR I PRINCIPAL CELEBRATIONS OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR 2021 First Sunday of Advent November 29, 2020 Ash Wednesday February 17, 2021 Easter Sunday April 4, 2021 The Ascension of the Lord May 16, 2021 (replaces the 7th Sunday of • In the Diocese of Salt Lake City, The Solemnity Easter) of the Ascension of the Lord is transferred to Sunday, May 16, 2020. Pentecost Sunday May 23, 2021 The Most Holy Trinity May 30, 2021 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 6, 2021 First Sunday of Advent (Liturgical Year 2022) November 28, 2021 In addition to Sunday, the following days are designated HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION December 8, 2020 Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary December 25, 2020 Christmas January 1, 2021 Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God LECTIONARY FOR MASS Sunday Cycle Year B November 29, 2020 to November 21, 2021 Weekday Cycle Cycle I January 11 to February 16, 2021 June 1 to November 28, 2021 Sunday Cycle Year C November 28, 2021 to November 20, 2022 The readings from the weekday cycle generally are to be used even on days on which a Memorial or Optional Memorial of a Saint occurs. The exceptions to this rule are the Memorials or Optional Memorials which have “proper readings” (usually only the Gospel) assigned to them in the Lectionary for Mass and which must be used on those days. Substitutions from the Commons or Proper of Saints may be made for the other readings suggested for those Memorials or Optional Memorials. The Priest Celebrant, however, should not omit “too often or without sufficient cause the readings assigned for each day in the weekday Lectionary” (Introduction to the Lectionary for Mass, no. 83). 1 NOTES FOR THE YEAR OF GRACE 2021 1. The 2021 liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, November 29, 2020. During the year 2021: a. As noted in the table of Principal Celebrations, in the Dioceses of Salt Lake City, the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord (May 13, 2021) has been transferred to the following Sunday (May 16, 2021) and replaces the Seventh Sunday of Easter. b. Sunday, July 4 is the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and the liturgical celebration of Independence Day is omitted this year. Independence Day may be appropriately acknowledged in the Homily, Universal Prayer, and hymns during the Sunday liturgy. c. Sunday, December 12 is the Third Sunday of Advent, and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is omitted this year. Our Lady of Guadalupe may be appropriately honored in the Homily, Universal Prayer, and hymns during the Sunday liturgy. If pastoral advantage calls for it (cf. GIRM, no. 376), a Votive Mass of Our Lady of Guadalupe may be celebrated on a weekday before or after December 12, with the proper readings and prayers. 2. In a decree dated February 11, 2018, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments inscribed the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church in the General Roman Calendar to be observed on the Monday after Pentecost, taking precedence over an obligatory Memorial that coincides with it. Thus, May 24, 2021 shall be observed as the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. 3. The Anniversary of the Dedication of a Parish Church is a proper solemnity for the parish. See Appendix IV on page 25 for a listing of dedication dates. 4. The Anniversary of the Rededication of the Cathedral Church of the Madeleine, February 21, is celebrated as a solemnity in the cathedral church and as a feast throughout the diocese. 5. “On Saturdays in Ordinary Time when no Obligatory Memorial occurs, an Optional Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary may be celebrated” (Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, no. 15). This is indicated in the calendar by “BVM.” The readings and prayers may be selected from the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Votive Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Roman Missal, or the Collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary. 6. Ritual Masses – Ritual Masses are connected to the celebration of Sacraments or Sacramentals. They may not be celebrated on the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, on solemnities, on the days within the Octave of Easter, on All Souls Day (Commemoration of the Faithful Departed), on Ash Wednesday, and during Holy Week and furthermore due regard is to be had for the norms set out in the ritual books or in the Masses themselves (GIRM-General Instruction of the Roman Missal 372). 2 PROPER CALENDAR DIOCESES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA January 04 Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious Memorial 05 Saint John Neumann, Bishop Memorial 06 Saint André Bessette, Religious* 22 Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children 23 Saint Vincent, Deacon and Martyr and Saint Marianne Cope, Virgin* March 03 Saint Katharine Drexel, Virgin* May 10 Saint Damien de Veuster, Priest* 15 Saint Isidore* July 01 Saint Junipero Serra, Priest* 04 Independence Day 05 Saint Elizabeth of Portugal* 14 Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Virgin Memorial 18 Saint Camillus de Lellis, Priest* September 09 Saint Peter Claver, Priest Memorial October 05 Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Priest* 06 Blessed Marie Rose Durocher, Virgin* 19 Sts. SOLEMNITY OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE HOLY MASS AND INDUCTION OF MEMBERS OF SAINT JUAN DIEGO GUILD CHURCH OF THE SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN DECEMBER 12, 2008 Zec 2:14-17 Jdt 13:18bcde, 19 Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab Lk 1:39-47 HOMILY Praised be Jesus Christ, now and for ever. Amen. 1. When the Blessed Virgin Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, miraculously pregnant with Saint John the Baptist, both Elizabeth and John the Baptist, in her womb, recognized the great mystery in their midst. Saint Elizabeth, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, cried out: And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Gospel). Saint John the Baptist, the last of the prophets and the herald of Our Savior at His coming, began already His divinely-given mission by leaping for joy in His mother’s womb. Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist recognized the fulfillment of God’s promise to become one with us, to dwell with us, so that we might be His chosen sons and daughters always (cf. Reading I). 2. It is the mystery of God’s dwelling with us in His only-begotten Son, conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that Our Lady of Guadalupe proclaimed from the moment of her first apparition to Saint Juan Diego on December 9th of 1531. It is the same mystery of God’s immeasurable mercy and love toward us that Our Lady of Guadalupe announced in each of her apparitions over the four days from December 9th to 12th.

The Armor of Faith Topic Summary: Miracles and Faith Our Lady of Guadalupe Our Lady of Guadalupe Public Domain Introduction [Greeting:] → Welcome to “The Armor of Faith,” a show where we hope to bring our listeners closer to the Word of God and the blessings we receive through living in the fullness of the Catholic faith. My name is Doug and I will be your host as we discuss the blessings of the Church Christ built upon Peter. I am joined today by my panel: [names] Helen is a Dominican, which is also known as the Order of Preachers, and she is engaged in youth catechesis and music ministry at Saint Philip Benizi Catholic Mission in Cedaredge, Colorado. Sharon is our token cradle Catholic, and I am simply here to ask questions, because it is so much easier to ask questions than to have to actually answer them. That burden goes to our panelists, so welcome to our panelists as well as to our listeners. Let us open with a prayer: Heavenly Father, we lift up our hearts in thanks and praise for this opportunity to open and share your Holy Word this day. We pray that You are with us and all our listeners as we share with one another the blessings of faith. We pray You will grant us wisdom and understanding as we seek to learn Your Holy Truth. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit we pray. Discussion: Last time, we discussed the story of the man born blind as recounted in John 9.

Byrne of the Diocese of Springfield, has issued a "Decree and Order" merging Our Lady of Guadalupe and Immaculate Conception Parishes in Holyoke into St. Jerome's Parish, also in Holyoke. This reconfiguration will take place August 15, 2021. The "Decree" along with the supporting documents have been posted on www.diospringfield.org. This merger came at the direct request of the parishes involved and was the result of many years of discussion between the three faith communities. “Since July 2020, our three parishes have worked closely in preparation for our formal merger on August 15. Parish leaders are convinced that the reconfiguration they have proposed will foster a stronger sense of community and promote a better sharing of resources,” said Father Mark Stelzer, the administrator of St. Jerome Parish. “The truly wonderful thing about this merger is that the request to merge came from parish leaders and was not imposed on parishioners by diocesan leadership. The entire process by which the Holyoke merger came about reflects the type of collaboration that builds stronger parishes and a more vibrant Church,” he said.

Glass, bishop of Salt Lake City, Utah, from 1915 until 1926, was the last Vincentian to be appointed a bishop in the continen- tal United States and the first since 1868. "How or why a relatively obscure pastor in Los Angeles was given that post is not clear."' If asked how the appointment came about, older Vincentians usually answer "through the influence of the Dohenys."2 It is a natural re- sponse, given Glass's close friendship with the oil baron and his wife. That very closeness, however, presents a difficulty. It is unlikely that Glass or his friends would deliberately seek a post that would remove him from the fleshpots of Chester Place (the Doheny residence in Los Angeles) and exile him to a remote diocese that was geographically the most extensive in the United States and that had a small Catholic population.

A HISTORY OF fjuab County Pearl D. Wilson with June McNulty and David Hampshire UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF JuaB County Pearl D. Wilson with June McNulty and David Hampshire luab County, one of Utah's earliest created counties, sits along the strategic north-south corridor of the state. Prehistoric and Native American Indian cultures roamed there, as did early Spanish priests and explorers, who left an important record of the area. Trappers and traders wandered the mountains and deserts that create stark contrasts in this geo graphically diverse county. Mark Twain, an early traveler through parts of luab, penned interesting insights of the county, which contained portions of the Pony Express and Overland Stage routes. Mormon pioneers arrived to establish farms and ranches. This was followed by the build ing of railroads and mineral exploration. Rail traffic for a vast region centered in Nephi, labeled "Little Chicago." To the west, the Tintic Mining District rose as one of Utah's richest gold and silver mining areas, attract ing a more ethnically diverse population. From majestic Mount Nebo to streams and lakes and the vast sand dunes of west Juab, the county contains many recreational possibili ties. Juab County is rich in history, geogra phy, and tradition; this book tells its story. ISBN: 0-913738-20-4 A HISTORY OF Juab County A HISTORY OF ffuaB County Pearl D.
