ARCTIC WL. 43, NO. 4 (DECEMBER 1990) P. 393-403 Beaufort Formation (Late Tertiary) as Seen from Prince Patrick Island, Arctic Canada’ JOHN G. FYLES’ (Received 20 March 1990; accepted in revked form 14 June 1990) ABSTRACT. The Beaufort Formation, in its typearea on Prince Patrick Island, is a single lithostratigraphicunit, a few tens of metres thick, consisting of unlithified sandy deposits of braided rivers. Organicbeds in the sand have yielded more than 200 species of plants and insects and probably originated during the Pliocene, when the area supported coniferous forest. ThisBeaufort unit forms the thin eastern edge of a northwest-thickeningwedge of sand and gravel beneath the western part of the island. These largely unexposed beds,up to several hundred metres thick, include the Beaufort unit and perhaps other older or younger deposits.On the islands northeast and southwest of PrincePatrick Island (MeighenIsland to Banks Island),the name BeaufortFormation has been appliedto similar deposits of late Rrtiary age. Most recorded Beaufort beds on these islands are stratigraphically and paleontologically equivalentto the “type” Beaufort, but a few sites that have been called Beaufort (suchas Duck Hawk Bluffsand the lower unit at Ballast Brook,on Banks Island) differ stratigraphicallyand paleontologically from the “type” Beaufort. This paper recommends that these deposits (probably middle Miocene) and others like them be assigned new stratigraphic names and not be included in the Beaufort Formation as now defined. Informal names Mary Sachs gravel (Duck HawkBluffs) and Ballast Brookbeds are proposed as an initial step. Formal use of the name Beaufort Formation shouldrestricted be to the western Arctic Islands. -

SUBMISSION TO THE NUNAVUT WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT BOARD FOR Information: Decision: X Issue: Downlisting of Peary Caribou from Endangered to Threatened. Background: In October 2016 the Committee on the Status of Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) provided a re‐ assessment of Peary Caribou to the federal Minister of the Environment. This begins the formal listing process under the federal Species at Risk Act. Peary Caribou, which are currently listed under the federal SARA as Endangered, have been re‐assessed by COSEWIC in a lower risk category as Threatened. A recovery strategy is required for both Endangered and Threatened species. If Peary Caribou are downlisted under the federal SARA, a recovery strategy will still be required and it will not affect the current recovery strategy development process currently underway for Peary Caribou GN - Morgan Anderson Community consultations on the proposed downlisting of Peary Caribou were held with hunters and trappers organizations (HTOs) and regional wildlife boards in the range of Peary Caribou between June and August 2017. Organizations were asked to provide their formal position on the proposed downlisting and with any other comments, concerns or information that they feel should be considered. Consultation packages, in Inuktitut and English, were sent by mail and email. They included: a letter, information on the assessment and a questionnaire/response form. Follow‐up calls to the HTOs and RWBs were made on September 27, 2017. Results of Consultation: Kitikmeot Regional Wildlife Board No response -

Abstract: The estimate of 25 845 Peary caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi) on the Queen Elizabeth Islands (QEI) in the Canadian High Arctic in summer 1961 is the only nearly range-wide 'benchmark' for the past number of caribou. No variances or confidence intervals were calculated for this estimate and no estimates were calculated for Peary caribou on the three major islands of Ellesmere, Devon, and Axel Heiberg. We reexamined the 1961 raw data by grouping the QEI into five island-complexes ('eco-units') and calculating, for each unit, the estimated number of caribou and the standard error, and the 95% confidence interval of the estimate, using a 'bootstrap' technique with 100 000 replications. Our goal was to provide an ecological basis for evaluating subsequent changes in numbers rather than relying on single-island evaluations. Our bootstrap reanalysis produced an estimate of 28 288 ± 2205 SE with a 95% CI of 20 436—37 031 Peary caribou on the QEI in summer 1961. Substantial differences in density were apparent among the five eco-units, with about a 50-fold difference from 0.01 caribou • km-2 in the Eastern eco-unit to 0.5 caribou • km-2 in the Northwestern eco-unit. -

The sparse radiocarbon dates show emergence of only 10 m through DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/032973ar the Holocene on the Arctic Ocean coast, increasing to 20 m 100 km to the east. Hence, from Brock Island, representative of westernmost coasts, the sea level See table of contents curve since the latest Pleistocene has a very low gradient, whereas on eastern Prince Patrick Island the curve takes the more typical exponential form. A decline in isobases towards the west is thus registered. Drowned estuaries, Publisher(s) breached lakes, and coastal barriers, particularly in southwest Prince Patrick Island, suggest that the sea is now transgressing at a rate that decreases Les Presses de l'Université de Montréal towards the north end of the island, hence there is also a component of tilt to the south. Delevelling is assumed to result from undefined ice loads, but may ISSN have a tectonic component. The sole prominent raised marine deposit is a ridge probably built in a period of more mobile sea ice, possibly at a time of 0705-7199 (print) stable or slightly rising sea level in the middle or early Holocene. -

Peary Caribou and Muskox Survey of the Melville-Prince Patrick Complex, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, Summer 2012 Tracy Davison, Judy Williams, and Jan Adamczewski Environment and Natural Resources Government of the Northwest Territories 2016 Manuscript Report No. 259 The contents of this paper are the sole responsibility of the authors. i ABSTRACT In July 2012, an aerial fixed-wing transect survey of Peary caribou species and muskoxen species was conducted on the Melville-Prince Patrick Island complex, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. This area had not been surveyed for these species since 1997. A Helio Courier was used for the survey with observers on each side and a recorder/navigator in the front. Survey lines were generally spaced at 5 km intervals and ground coverage was about 20%. We estimated the population of Peary caribou on the Melville-Prince Patrick complex to be over 5,500 adult caribou, where in 1997 the population estimate was below 1,000. We estimated the population of muskoxen on the Melville-Prince Patrick complex to be over 3,500 adult caribou, where in 1997 the population estimate was below 2,400. In 1997 there were no living caribou found on the smaller islands of the complex (Eglinton, Emerald and Byam Martin islands), however in this survey caribou were found on all three islands. In 1997 and in this survey there were no living muskoxen on Emerald or Byam Martin Island. Results showed an increase in overall numbers of caribou and muskoxen since 1997; however the trend between the 1997 and 2012 surveys is unknown because of the extended time between surveys.
