STENTON2 (Received 13 June 2006; accepted in revised form 31 July 2006) ABSTRACT. In 1999 a team of geologists discovered an archaeological site near Cape Southwest, Axel Heiberg Island. On the basis of its location and the analysis of two artifacts removed from the site, the discoverers concluded that it was a hastily abandoned campsite created by Hans Krüger’s German Arctic Expedition, which was believed to have disappeared between Meighen and Amund Ringnes islands in 1930. If the attribution to Krüger were correct, the existence of this site would demonstrate that the expedition got farther on its return journey to Bache Peninsula than previously believed. An archaeological investigation of the site by the Government of Nunavut in 2004 confirmed its tentative attribution to the German Arctic Expedition but suggested that it is not a campsite, but the remains of a deliberately and carefully constructed cache. The finds suggest that one of the three members of the expedition may have perished before reaching Axel Heiberg Island, and that the survivors, in order to lighten their sledge, transported valued but heavy items (including Krüger’s geological specimens) to this prominent and well-known location to cache them, intending to return and recover them at some later date. FYLES’ (Received 20 March 1990; accepted in revked form 14 June 1990) ABSTRACT. The Beaufort Formation, in its typearea on Prince Patrick Island, is a single lithostratigraphicunit, a few tens of metres thick, consisting of unlithified sandy deposits of braided rivers. Organicbeds in the sand have yielded more than 200 species of plants and insects and probably originated during the Pliocene, when the area supported coniferous forest. ThisBeaufort unit forms the thin eastern edge of a northwest-thickeningwedge of sand and gravel beneath the western part of the island. These largely unexposed beds,up to several hundred metres thick, include the Beaufort unit and perhaps other older or younger deposits.On the islands northeast and southwest of PrincePatrick Island (MeighenIsland to Banks Island),the name BeaufortFormation has been appliedto similar deposits of late Rrtiary age. Most recorded Beaufort beds on these islands are stratigraphically and paleontologically equivalentto the “type” Beaufort, but a few sites that have been called Beaufort (suchas Duck Hawk Bluffsand the lower unit at Ballast Brook,on Banks Island) differ stratigraphicallyand paleontologically from the “type” Beaufort. This paper recommends that these deposits (probably middle Miocene) and others like them be assigned new stratigraphic names and not be included in the Beaufort Formation as now defined. Informal names Mary Sachs gravel (Duck HawkBluffs) and Ballast Brookbeds are proposed as an initial step. Formal use of the name Beaufort Formation shouldrestricted be to the western Arctic Islands.

The combined use of a GPS receiver and mapping software proved to be a straightforward, flexible, and inexpensive way of mapping and displaying (in digital or paper format) 400 place names and 37 trails used by Inuit of Igloolik, in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. The geographic coordinates of some of the places named had been collected in a previous toponymy project. Experienced hunters suggested the names of additional places, and these coordinates were added on location, using a GPS receiver. The database of place names thus created is now available to the community at the Igloolik Research Centre. The trails (most of them traditional, well-traveled routes used in Igloolik for generations) were mainly mapped while traveling, using the track function of a portable GPS unit. Other trails were drawn by experienced hunters, either on paper maps or electronically using Fugawi mapping software. The methods employed in this project are easy to use, making them helpful to local communities involved in toponymy and other mapping projects. The geographic data obtained with this method can be exported easily into text files for use with GIS software if further manipulation and analysis of the data are required. A century ago, an international team of scientists sailed under the Canadian flag to the western Canadian Arctic, via the Bering Strait, to achieve the goals of the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913 – 18. This major expedition was a milestone in the history of Canada. The scientists explored a vast, unknown sea and land area that extended from the Alaskan northern coast to Bathurst Inlet in Canada, and from Meighen Island to approximately 160 – 200 km inland from the continental coasts. This area had never been explored by an expedition before, and many parts of it had never been visited (except, presumably, by Inuit and their ancestors). The expedition resulted in a remarkable harvest of terrestrial and marine plants and animals, and associated data. The scientists furthered geographic and scientific knowledge of the Arctic and published 74 reports in various scientific fields, yet none of these addressed vertebrate zoology. The present report attempts to make up for this deficiency. Overall, the CAE collected and preserved 2084 vertebrate specimens and inventoried 139 species, which together fairly depicted the Arctic vertebrate community. Almost all specimens are preserved at the Canadian Museum of Nature. They significantly supplemented the rather meagre vertebrate collections of the Museum of those times and have since prompted the continuing development of these collections.   • Translitterering Och Alternativa Geografiska Namnformer
    TRANSLITTERERING OCH ALTERNATIVA GEOGRAFISKA NAMNFORMER Version XX, 27 juli 2015, Stefan Nordblom 1 FÖRORD För många utländska egennamn, i första hand personnamn och geografiska namn, finns det på svenska väl etablerade namnformer. Om det inte finns någon sådan kan utländska egennamn dock vålla bekymmer vid översättning till svenska. Föreliggande material är tänkt att vara till hjälp i sådana situationer och tar upp fall av translitterering1 och transkribering2 samt exonymer3 . Problemen uppstår främst på grund av att olika språk har olika system för translitterering och transkribering från ett visst språk och på grund av att orter kan ha olika namn på olika utländska språk. Eftersom vi oftast översätter från engelska och franska innehåller sammanställningen även translittereringar och exonymer på engelska och franska (samt tyska). Man kan alltså i detta material göra en sökning på sådana namnformer och komma fram till den svenska namnformen. Om man t.ex. i en engelsk text träffar på det geografiska namnet Constance kan man söka på det namnet här och då få reda på att staden (i detta fall på tyska och) på svenska kallas Konstanz.
