Letherbee Distillers: From Outlaw Roots to International Acclaim With absolutely zero influence from outside investors or marketers, Letherbee Distillers’ level of authenticity is second to none. Now distributing in 12 states across the US, as well as in Germany and Denmark, the product family consists of the Original Label Gin, Barrel‐‐Aged Absinthe, Autumnal & Vernal Gins, Bësk, and Fernet. In 2011, gang of industry iconoclasts, led by Brenton Engel, came together through twists of fate, punk shows, and late night drinking at local dives. Brenton was born in rural Athens, Illinois, 170 miles southwest of Chicago, where generations of his family had been farmers. Though he was the first in the family not born on a working farm, it wouldn’t be long until he was on one. In 2003, he left Athens to attend college in Chicago where he enjoyed dive bars and met friends with whom he formed the punk band, Pool of Frogs. Not content with city life, Brenton returned to Athens and L‐R: Cody Hudson, Nathan Ozug, Brenton Engel, with friends built what they called "the cabin in the woods," Robby Haynes, John McCourt. on the outskirts of Athens and led a communal lifestyle. They planted vegetable crops‐‐sold what they didn't consume‐‐and kept chickens and livestock to self‐sustain. Being in their early 20s and connoisseurs of a good time, they also made fruit wines and, after some research on the internet and experimentation, brewed some pretty good beer. Brenton enjoyed the experimentation and, in 2007, he wondered if he could make hard spirits, specifically moonshine. -

Vodka Och White Russian
Vodka och White Russian. White Russian är den vodkabaserade drinken med kaffelikör och grädde som nått samma kultstatus som filmen The Big Lebowski, genom vilken den fick sitt stora genomslag i slutet av nittiotalet. Utöver strålkastarljuset från Hollywood är det den lättillgängliga vodkan som gjort White Russian till en av världens mest populära drinkar. The Dude’s signaturdrink Vi mjukstartar det nya året med en spritsort som är känd för sin medgörlighet och en cocktail som är väldigt lätt att göra — nämligen vodka och White Russian. Jag ringde upp min vän och bartendermentor, Tony Comas, egentligen mest för att önska honom gott nytt år, men inte helt oväntat ledde samtalet in på bar-relaterade ämnen. Den här gången pratade vi vodka, något vi kom in på via bröderna Cohen’s “The Big Lebowski” från 1998, som jag såg om härom dagen. Den vodkabaserade drinken White Russian är nämligen huvudkaraktären Jeff Lebowski aka The Dude’s signaturdrink. Under den två timmar långa spelfilmen dricker The Dude hela åtta White Russians — den nionde tappar han i golvet. Vodkacocktails är lätta att ta till sig Vodka är för alla välbekant och diskret, och därmed tillgänglig för den breda publiken. Enligt Tony Comas är inslaget av vodka i White Russian en av anledningarna till dess popularitet. “Ingen säger nej till en shot vodka, men när det kommer till andra spritsorter har folk åsikter och preferenser.” Utöver vodkans attraktionskraft är White Russian “simply delicious”. Han menar att det inte kan gå fel med grädde och kaffe i kombination. Jag säger till Tony att jag själv använder vodka i cocktails huvudsakligen just som en smakbindande komponent till de andra ingredienserna jag valt ut, vilkas karaktärer är de jag vill framhäva - ja, lite som i en White Russian. -
