LON Di )4 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is an ethnographic study of Year 9 school pupils' responses to horror films, and, in particular, The Company of Wolves (Jordan, 1984). It employs social semiotic theory to analyse both film texts and audience engagements with such texts, exploring how such engagements involve transformations of subjectivity, particular kinds of competence in reading visual codes, and certain types of affective response to horror texts. It explores, briefly, histories of elements of the horror genre, especially the figures of the werewolf and the folktale heroine, in the period from the Enlightenment to the present day. The thesis develops a theory of textual pleasure in relation to horror films, drawing on Bakhtin's theory of carnival, Freud's theories of pleasure, and Bourdieu's theory of taste. It argues that fear and pleasure are related in this context; that such pleasures are socially situated; and that they relate to forms of textual identification. A theory of the sublime is also developed in the context of the social semiotics of film, exploring the history of the sublime from Kant and Burke to postmodernist theory. It is argued that sublime images operate through a dialectic of revelation and concealment, and that audiences replicate this mechanism in their viewing, and in the social sites in which they spectate. These structures are associated, furthermore, with socially-determined structures of aesthetic taste, and ways in which these in turn determine texts as popular or elite (or a hybrid of the two). Finally, the thesis addresses the pedagogies of English and Media Studies, arguing that classrooms need to become spectatorial spaces, open to new literacies of the visual, and equipped with the texts, technologies, and practices adequate to these new competences. You know about the work we did on the Company of Wolves, just before you left, well we have just seen the film. Since you missed it. I will tell you about it, because it's a good film. First of all you see all those mini-stories, like in the book. Except before that, at the beginning. there is a part where you see a girl in nowadays, dreaming. And then in her dream you see the story and that is how it starts off. The actors in the film are quite good, and the granny is that woman from 'Murder She Wrote', remember? Anyway, the dream is all set in the woods a while ago in the past. like in the book. It starts off in autumn, and then ends in winter. The entire film is basically just like in the book, apart from the end. At the end. she (the little girl) ends up, supposedly. turning into a wolf herself (in the dream) and chased. Then she wakes up to find wolves rushing up to her bedroom and then you hear a poem at the very end. Oh yeah, there is another thing made different. Throughout the film you see these toys in all shapes and sizes from her room, in real life. Also, at Pleasures of the Spectatorium 7 the end, the granny gets killed by having her head chopped/knocked off, like a china doll, and smashing on a wall. Funny or what?! Overall, the film is quite good, with a few gory bits and nice lighting techniques. Well, how's life in the North Pole?! Hope to see you soon so you can see this great film! In some ways it is an art-house film, dense with obscure symbolism, derived from the self-consciously literary prose of Angela Carter, who co-wrote it with director Neil Jordan.

The Sanctification of ear:F Images of the Religious in Horror Films Abstract Horror film functions both as a threat and a catharsis by confronting us with our fear of death, the supernatural, the unknown and irrational, ''the other" in general, a loss of identity, and forces beyond our control. Over the last century, religious symbols and themes have played a prominent and persistent role in the on-screen construction of this confrontation. That role is, at the same time, ambiguous insofar as religious iconography has become unhinged from a compelling moral vision and reduced to mere conventions that produce a quasi-religious quality to horror that lacks the symbolic power required to engage us at the deepest level of our being. Although religious symbols in horror films are conventional in their frequent use, they may have lost all connection to deeper human questions.

    ABSTRACT “WHY SO SERIOUS?” COMICS, FILM AND POLITICS, OR THE COMIC BOOK FILM AS THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION OF IDENTITY AND NARRATIVE IN A POST-9/11 WORLD by Kyle Andrew Moody This thesis analyzes a trend in a subgenre of motion pictures that are designed to not only entertain, but also provide a message for the modern world after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The analysis provides a critical look at three different films as artifacts of post-9/11 culture, showing how the integration of certain elements made them allegorical works regarding the status of the United States in the aftermath of the attacks. Jean Baudrillard‟s postmodern theory of simulation and simulacra was utilized to provide a context for the films that tap into themes reflecting post-9/11 reality. University of Cape Town [Abstract] Urban visions in contemporary film considered to be science fiction are, in fundamental ways, not extrapolations from (or even analogies with) the present, but rather derive their extrapolative impetus from the confluence of urban utopianism and the development of the film medium in the first three decades of the twentieth century. This study seeks to understand the visual dynamics of contemporary science fiction cities in film by exploring a number of diverse architectural and cinematic influences. The argument is initiated through a consideration of utopianism and science fiction, before moving onto specific architectural analysis focused on utopian plans from the modernist period, and the growth of New York during the 1920s. Through a brief reading of German Expressionist Cinema in Chapter 3, the spatial and architectural groundwork is laid for the analysis of several films in Chapters 4-6: Disclosure, Blade Runner, Selen, The Devil's Advocate, 12 Monkeys and The Fifth Element. (While not all the films would be considered as science fiction, those non-science fiction films offer provocative readings of the city as a whole).

    The Museum of Modern Art 50th Anniversary •JO NO. 47 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL PICTURES RETROSPECTIVE AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Department of Film of The Museum of Modern Art will present a retrospective exhibition of films from American International Pictures beginning July 26 and running through August 28, 1979. The 38 film retrospective, which coincides with the studio's 25th anniversary, was selected from the company's total production of more than 500 films, by Adrienne Mancia, Curator, and Larry Kardish, Associate Curator, of the Museum's Department of Film. The films, many in new 35mm prints, will be screened in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium and, concurrent with the retro­ spective, a special installation of related film stills and posters will be on view in the adjacent Auditorium Gallery. "It's extraordinary to see how many filmmakers, writers and actors — now often referred to as 'the New Hollywood'—took their first creative steps at American International," commented Adrienne Mancia. "AIP was a good training ground; you had to work quickly and economically. Low budgets can force you to find fresh resources. There is a vitality and energy to these feisty films that capture a certain very American quality. I think these films are rich in information about our popular culture and we are delighted to have an opportunity to screen them."
