David Sedaris An evening with David Sedaris Tue, Jun 24 ABOUT THE ARTIST Royce Hall With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of 8pm America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. PERFORMANCE DURATION: Approximately 90 minutes. David Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections No intermission. of personal essays, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and his most recent book, Let’s Explore David Sedaris will sign Diabetes with Owls, each of which became an immediate bestseller. The audio autographs before and after version of Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls was a 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards the performance. Nominee for Best Spoken Word Album. He and his sister, Amy Sedaris, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays which have been produced at La Mama, Lincoln Center, and The Drama Department in New York City. These plays include Stump MESSAGE FROM THE CENTER Welcome to the final performance on the CAP UCLA 2013- 2014 season, another wonderful evening of wit and wisdom from the one-and-only David Sedaris. Every year David joins us as part of his annual book tour. Every year he posts up in Royce Hall before and after the show, lingering as long as necessary to sign a book or an autograph for every fan who wants one. And there are a lot of you. (His record is 10 and a half hours!). Every year David also incorporates a book suggestion from another into his appearances. We love getting reading suggestions from authors who inspire us. This year, David was so moved by his book suggestion that he wanted to also invite Akhil Sharma—author of Family Life, a heartbreaking story based on his own life—to share with us excerpts from this story, which took Sharma 12 years to write. It’s a remarkably generous sensibility to bring to this hall and we glad you are here to help us welcome both Sharma and Sedaris for an evening celebrating the art of the storyteller. We’re also proud also celebrate some young storytellers in our midst tonight. For the last several years, the Center has held a comedy writing competition for student writers here at UCLA. This year’s winners are in the audience with us tonight. We reflect on this concept of storytelling in all we do. We are intrigued by the mythic al and myriad forms a story can take shape and wind it’s way into our psyche. We’re emboldened by the way an artist’s reflection of a story helps write the landscape around us---whether it’s told through words, wordless movement, embodied theatricality or inspired music. There’s power in a story and in the telling of it. And there’s power in the coming together of a community to hear it. Thank you for joining us tonight. We look forward to experiencing more stories with you in our coming season. Enjoy. the Host, Stitches, One Woman Shoe, which received an Obie Award, Incident at Cobbler’s Knob, and The Book of Liz, which was published in book form by Dramatists Play Service. David Sedaris’s original radio pieces can often be heard on the public radio show This American Life. David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. His latest audio recording of new stories (recorded live) is David Sedaris: Live for Your Listening Pleasure (November 2009). A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (2013).
