comment carol adams, editor One would think that when problems arise again and again over the same issue, that a viable solution would be worked out and implemented. Now I realize that this is only common sense to save oneself from continual agony, but unfortunately with the system that is now set up with the Student's Union, the problem is soon forgotten until the next time. The next time what? The next time there is an election. The word "election means many different things to different people. For some it's just one more thing that you hear about from the SUB building and decide that it doesn't really apply to you and that you'll ignore it. For others it's a good time to drag up everything you know about your opponent's past in order to make them look bad and you good For still others it's a time to show honest interest in helping out and learning something yourself —and hopefully not getting swallowed up by the more power-hungry opponents. Anyway, each time there is an election, there seems to be a blood-thirst bath for someone. Almost a year ago now, when the Apology campaigning for elections for the present directors and executive of WLUSU had not yet started, "all hell broke loose" when one candidate accused another of campaigning before the official start. This was due to the fact that a picture was placed in the Cord announcing her intentions of running —nothing more. This was an option left open for anyone running for a position. The At this point in time, I would inadequate and vague terminology in the bylaws concerning elections did not help much in clearing up the problem. It was ruled like to convey my apologies to not to be favouritism or pre-campaigning, and from that point on, the election was no longer a "clean" campaign, but one that Mr. DaleFogle for any embar- could be viewed by most as a "smut" campaign. One was disqualified at the "All Because of the exclusion of the Candidates Meeting" when an agent representing the person showed, instead of the person themself. Appealed to the highest question posed in the article to authority is the case of elections, The Dean's Adivsory Council ruled to allow the candidate to run. Then a supporter of two of the the student body, the article candidates took it upon himself to campaign for the candidates, and due to an "oversight" on his part, concerning the definition made little sense. Also, a letter of "posters" versus "flyers", caused the candidates to be disqualified, as ruled by the Chief Electoral Officer. This was the topic that was received and published of debate for a half hour on Sunday night at the Board meeting —what the definition of a "poster" is and how the term was not sufficiently clarified as "supporter" is interpreted. an answer from another person, This decision is also being appealed to DAC. Because of these ambiguities, it is my suggestion that perhaps the whole area of so that comments made that are the running of elections should be examined closely and any vague terms defined before the general election in February. These not necessarily agreed with by bylaws should be passed on to both Radio Laurier and the Cord Weekly to avoid any problems with communication of Mr. Fogle could be inferred as information.
