Itinerary Day 1: 1/29/20, Guatemala City. Clarion Hotel to Marroquin University and Textile Museum, to Guatemala Market, to Cocales “Crazy Gas Station” at intersection of CA 12 and 11 to Los Tarrales Natural Reserve. Day 2: 1/30/20, Los Tarrales Nat. Res. into jeeps and up to La Isla vista point. Down for lunch at lodge. Then San Pedro trail and back to La Rinconada lodge, for dinner. Day 3: 1/31/20, Pre-dawn, Volcan Fuego eruption. Los Tarrales, short walk on San Pedro Trail. Breakfast at lodge. Depart and drive to Fuentes Georginia Hot Springs Spa. Lunch with “mega flock”. Depart and drive to Xela (Quetzaltenango). Dinner at Hotel Bonifaz. Day 4: 2/1/20, Split group. One group, (Keith), up at 4:00 AM. Drive to Refugio del Quetzal for Quetzal, then viewing from mirador “overlook”. Then drive to San Rafael for lunch. Then drive back to Xela. Second group, (Patricia) Xela tour. Ludwig,and I havebanded 60,000 downy young Herring Gulls (Larusarqentatus) in coloniesin LakesHuron, Michigan, and Superior.I havegrouped the coloniesaccording to geographical locationin sevenareas (See Table 1). From thesecolonies as of July1961 we have recovered 47 adults(See Tables 2, 3, and4 for eachrecovery) which were banded as chicks.All of theseadults werein full adult plumage,and I have assumedthat they were breedingin thecolonies where we found them. Shade‑Grown Birding 2019 BIRDS
Field Guides Tour Report Guatemala: Shade‑grown Birding 2019 Feb 9, 2019 to Feb 17, 2019 Jesse Fagan For our tour description, itinerary, past triplists, dates, fees, and more, please VISIT OUR TOUR PAGE. This was a fun trip to Guatemala. We enjoyed excellent birding in a variety of diverse habitats. We birded under Caribbean lowland jungles covering ancient Mayan temples, in cloud forest draped with intense epiphytic growth, crossed "the most beautiful lake in the world," and felt the ground shake from active volcanoes. We also got to walk colonial streets in Antigua and taste delicious homegrown coffee at several fincas. Birding highlights were many: the tiny Wine-throated Hummingbird at Fuentes Georginas, the only slightly larger, Slender Sheartail, on the shores of Lake Atitlan, the unbelievable Pink-headed Warbler on the slopes of Volcan Santa Maria, and the enigmatic Belted Flycatcher seen at Finca Filadelfia. However, none of us were prepared for our Horned Guan sighting! This was definitely the highlight for most folks in the group. Molecular Identification of Toxoplasma Gondii in Roadkill Wild Animals in Yucatan, Mexico

Toxoplasma gondii DNA Centro de Investigaciones Regionales Dr. Hideyo Noguchi, was identified in several organs retrieved from a Yucatan squirrel (Sciurus Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, yucatanensis), a coatimundi (Nasua narica), and a greater grison (Galictis Mérida, Yucatán, México vittata). The amplified fragments of Toxoplasma gondii DNA were purified, 2 Laboratorio de Parasitología, Campus de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias, sequenced, and certified by BLAST analysis. Our results confirm that Toxo- Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, plasma gondii can infect wild mammals from Yucatan, which could act as Mérida, Yucatán, México intermediate hosts and contribute to the transmission of the disease to hu- mans and domestic animals, as well as other wild animal species. -

Accepted on 21 February 2019. ABSTRACT: The Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus) is a top predator and inhabits mainly preserved forests. It occurs from Mexico to Argentina and throughout Brazil, where it is threatened by extinction. It hunts birds, mammals and reptiles, picking up both on the ground and on the branches in the forest. Here we report data on a pair and one young individual of this species registered in the southeast of Minas Gerais state, eastern portion of the Espinhaço Range, Brazil. In addition, a literature review on the diet of the species was carried out aiming gather data on food habits. The nesting territory, as well as the nest was discovered in semi-deciduous seasonal forest area. We recorded predation of a Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture (Cathartes burrovianus) by the young. After two days of observation, the nest was overthrown, what allowed its screening for other food items discovered after analysis of some feathers and bones. Detailed records of predation of S. ornatus were non-existent or inaccurate. -

This document also discusses all five NWRs collectively as one entity and when doing so, refers to the group as the “Great Lakes islands refuges” or “Great Lakes islands NWRs.” Introduction General Island Geological and Ecological Background Michigan and Wisconsin are fortunate to have many islands that form a “waterscape” unlike any found elsewhere in the world. Of the three Upper Great Lakes (Huron, Michigan, and Superior), there exists approximately 200 islands within the confines of the states in Lake Huron, 76 in Lake Michigan, and 175 in Lake Superior (not counting 86 in the St. Mary’s River) (Soule, 1993). The glacial history of island chains differs across the Upper Great Lakes. Glacial till overlying limestone bedrock forms the bulk of the Beaver Island group in northern Lake Michigan, although Pismire Island (part of Michigan Islands NWR) is an example of a sand and gravel bar island. Conversely, most islands in Lake Superior are formed of igneous and metamorphic bedrock, with the Huron Islands (of Huron NWR) being the result of granite upthrusts (Soule, 1993). Post-glacial history of these islands also varies. National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS, Refuge System) records indicate that many of the islands of Michigan Islands NWR were either impacted by human habitation (Gull Island) or by other uses (e.g., Hat Island was used as bombing range prior to refuge establishment) (Gates, 1950). -

Frequency and Distribution of Polygyny in Great Lakes Herring Gulls in 1978

SHUGART ABSTRACT.-Polygynous mating in Herring Gulls has been found only in northern Great Lakes breeding colonies. In 1978, I censused 21 colonies in northern Lake Michigan and Lake Huron to provide a baseline from which to gauge any future changes in the distribution and frequency of polygyny. Among 10,740 nests, I found 33 (0.3%) double-nests. Double-nests are two contiguous nest cups that contain eggs and are attended by one male and two females. I also found 30 (0.3%) nests with more than four eggs. These nests usually are attended by only two females (female associations). Polygynous groups and female associations were concentrated in northeastern Lake Mich- igan. The simultaneous occurrence of polygyny and female associations in Great Lakes Herring Gulls differs from the situation in other gull species in which only female associations have been described.
