An Evening to Launch the Biography of Stewie Dempster and Celebrate the Life of One of Wellington’S Greatest Cricketers Wanderers Cricket Club, Carillon Club, and Cricket Wellington present An evening to launch the Biography of Stewie Dempster and celebrate the life of one of Wellington’s greatest cricketers Join with MC Bryan Waddle, author Bill Francis, publisher Ron Cardwell, Stewie’s daughter Kay Martin as we talk with Wellington cricketers who came under the influence of Stew Dempster. Trevor McMahon, NZ’s second oldest Test Cricketer played against Stewie in his last Senior Match. Bruce Edgar, Bert Vance, Ian Smith, Evan Gray, Clive Currie, Brian and Grant Cederwall were all coached by Dempster in their formative years. They will share stories of their times as members of Stewie Dempster’s XI. Second Only To Bradman The Life of Stewie Dempster by Bill Francis Now a distant and somewhat neglected figure of New Zealand Cricket history, Stewie Dempster – 86 years on since he played his last test – is brought back to life in this long awaited biography reconfirming his rightful place in New Zealand’s cricketing elite. In his time, considered one of the best batsmen in the world, he scored New Zealand’s first test century, the first test century away from home and the first double century for New Zealand. His test average of 65.72 remains second only to Don Bradman for those having played ten tests or more. His test career was followed by 13 years in England where he captained Leicestershire in county cricket as well as playing for Sir Julien Cahn’s ‘travelling circus’. Back in New Zealand after the Second World War, coaching in Wellington, he provided exceptional mentoring to a talented group of young cricketers who made the big time. With some remarkable research Bill Francis shows not only why the name Dempster was big enough to take pride of place at the Basin Reserve (The CS Dempster Gates) – but uncovers the difficulties around Dempster’s upbringing plus the saga of his three marriages. It is a captivating story. Date: Monday 4th November, Time: 4.30pm to 6.30pm Venue: Norwood Room Basin Reserve; Cost: $45 per ticket (covers beer, wine, juice, canapes. Any profits go to Wanderers CC and Carillon Clubs for the benefit of youth sport in the Wellington Region) To secure your ticket call or text Evan Gray on 021 222 9335 or email [email protected] Signed copies of the book are available..

AUSTRALIA V. NEW ZEALAND DECEMBER 28, 2019 BOXING DAY TEST FACT SHEET - DAY 3 Australia and New Zealand have only met in Tests at the MCG on three previous occasions. The MCC library fact sheets for each of the first three days of this match will highlight one of those contests. Today's sheet reviews the Third Test of the 1987/88 series. ‘The 1987/88 New Zealand tour’ The New Zealanders embarked on the two-month tour in mid-November less than three weeks after returning from the World Cup in India, faced with a challenging itinerary of 19 matches, including three Tests, three first-class matches and 10 one-day internationals. The touring party, however, was an internationally-hardened and settled combination, despite the absence of the recently-retired Jeremy Coney and Bruce Edgar. The party comprised 12 of the World Cup squad, bolstered by the inclusion of star pace bowler Richard Hadlee, who had been unavailable for the World Cup, and left- arm spinner Evan Gray as a like-for-like replacement for Stephen Boock. ‘Third Test Match, December 26-30, 1987’ New Zealand entered the match needing a win to square the series, having lost at Brisbane by nine wickets and drawn at Adelaide. Both sides made two changes to their line-ups from Adelaide, the visitors substituting Ewen Chatfield and Philip Horne for Evan Gray and Martin Snedden, while Australia were unable to consider injured pacemen Bruce Reid and Merv Hughes, replacing them with Test debutant Tony Dodemaide and Mike Whitney, whose only two Test appearances had been in England six years earlier.

The 1980/81 team Unlike the inaugural Test tour in 1973/74, all leading New Zealand players, with the notable exception of Glenn Turner, were available and the selectors chose a squad of proven international players rather than a more even blend of experience and youthful promise. Lance Cairns, Jeremy Coney, Richard Hadlee and John Parker had toured Australia seven years earlier, while nine other members of the party had appeared in a total of 125 Tests between them. Only John Bracewell, Ian Smith and Martin Snedden could be seen as possible investments for the future. Bracewell’s younger brother, Brendon, who was playing club cricket in Perth at the time, was added to the squad immediately before the first Test as a replacement for left-arm paceman Gary Troup, who had not recovered from a side injury sustained early in the tour.

Gordon District Cricket Club Inc. 116TH ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2020-2021 SEASON FOUNDED 1905 2 GORDON DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2020-2021 GORDON DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC. 3 Message from the President Season 2020/21 was, in a lot of ways one of the toughest on record for our club, however as I reflected at the end of the season also one of our more successful seasons. It started in mid-March 2020, when Sydney was locked down as the emerging threat of the COVID-19 pandemic came to the fore. We met as an executive to try and plan how the pandemic would impact cricket and our club’s future viability. Within a month our initial analysis indicated we could possibly lose up to $80,000 of income from reduction in grants from Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW, loss of Geoff Hickman sponsorship as corporates tightened their belts, reduction in donors and cancellation of some of our key fund-raising events. Our club was in a solid position financially with good cash reserves, however losses like this would see us run out of funds within two years. From that point of time the club’s executive met every second Tuesday via ZOOM and tried to come up with a plan of how to mitigate these financial losses and keep the club functioning as normal. The problem was the target was moving and things changed every week or so it seemed. Along the way we realised our 1st grade side, due to a mix of retirements and other reasons, had lost the majority of players and would need to re-build by promoting our talented Under 21 players from the previous season, and giving some players an opportunity to shine that, they were not previously receiving.
