hiyabucks.com | 9 Waddesdon Manor is one of the most beautiful National Trust houses in Bucks. We headed over on a cool, quiet day in half-term to have a relaxing walk in the countryside and see the incredible architecture from yesteryear.

Located in the rolling hills of the Chilterns It’s a beautiful manor, even bigger than I just outside Aylesbury, Waddesdon had imagined, surrounded by trees and Manor is an old Rothschild manor house well-maintained topiary bushes. The view surrounded by a beautiful expanse of open from the top is glorious, being able to see countryside. You could almost imagine the all the shades of colour in the estate for horse-and-cart bumping up the mile-long miles. We began the walk around the house, driveway towards the car park as we pausing at the front drive to admire it in all moved through the green, rolling hills of its grandeur. We continued round, stopping the incredible landscape. After parking up in at the aviary to see the remarkable range we went straight to the ‘Welcome’ booth of protected birds still being looked after on and were given our stickers for entry, along the estate before returning to the gardens with a small but detailed leaflet containing to admire some of the expertly-groomed some extra information and a map. The topiary. staff were friendly and very knowledgeable, recommending things to see once we had Our visit fell right in the middle of made our way up to the manor. 10 | hiyabucks.com REVIEW

…and if you’ve made the journey out to Waddesdon, make sure you stop in at The Five Arrows Hotel, Bar and Restaurant for something to eat. Located on the quaint high-street of Waddesdon, The Five Arrows is a Grade II listed Hotel and Restaurant by the gates of Waddesdon Manor, serving British classics with a twist. We dropped in for a well-earned meal after our walk through the hills of the estate, and where better to go and eat than the restaurant that was originally built as part of the Waddesdon estate itself? Designed as a coaching inn to accommodate the architects and craftsman working on the manor itself, The Five Arrows was commissioned by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, the name deriving from the Rothschild family emblem: a shield surmounted by five arrows. As a result, the interior has retained its classy décor, but without pushing into the realms of the posh; despite the classiness, we didn’t feel underdressed in our casual clothing. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu, assisting in helping with dietary requests. We had a quick browse of their extensive wine list (an impressively large collection) before we got into the main event of the food menu. The Five Arrows features a varied and exciting menu featuring ingredients from local suppliers and seasonal vegetables from Eythrope, with everything from chickpea and slow roasted tomato salad all the way through to quince glazed duck breast. We opted for a butternut squash risotto, a seasonal special, and a kedgeree, finishing with a chocolate tart for dessert, all of which was fantastically flavoursome and prepared with the aesthetics in mind. Despite the complexity of the food, service was quick and attentive, and every effort was made to make sure we were comfortable and happy. The prices fall into the upper-medium category but, with the relaxing atmosphere of the restaurant, the quality of the food and the wonderful views of the lovely little village outside, it’s more than reasonable. So, if you’re making the pilgrimage up to the manor, don’t forget to check in for a hearty meal at The Five Arrows first! By Matt Batsman

Thousands of Bucks residents to benefit from new Scannappeal MRI fundraising

The Bucks MRI Appeal officially launched in March 2019 with an ambitious target of £1.5million. The new appeal will see two world class MRI scanners sited in Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville hospitals by 2020, making them the first in the UK to have scanners of this kind. With 22,000 MRI scans carried out at Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville hospitals last year, and demand growing by an estimated 13% annually, the launch of this appeal will future proof services for Bucks by increasing scanning capacity and capabilities across a wide range of medical investigation needs. Andrew Wainwright, Head of Imaging/Chief Radiographer for Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust commented, “Latest MRI techniques for cancer, stroke, heart, spine and many other conditions will improve diagnosis and reduce the need for invasive procedures. Scannappeal support will help us deliver the best possible care for patients in Bucks.” Thanks to the commitment made by Scannappeal the new MRI for High Wycombe is due to be installed by the end of the year. The project at Stoke Mandeville will commence in 2020. Scannappeal Chairman, William Baxter CBE shared his pride in the new appeal “Scannappeal have been proudly supporting and working with communities across Buckinghamshire since 1987 and this is the biggest appeal that we have run in our history.”

07429 182343 [email protected] | 47 Plants & Prosecco By Matt Batsman

The final Saturday of ebruaryF saw The Front Room in High Wycombe host the Plants & Prosecco event, an innovative creation from Began’s Vegan Street Food, that saw us treated to drinks, dancing and, most important of all, a diverse range of delicious vegan treats. If you’ve never come across the Began’s Vegan Street Food van before then you’re missing out. Serving up all sorts of vegan treats, Becky has been bringing great vegan food to High Wycombe’s high street since November 2016, serving up deliciously dirty vegan burgers to plant-based fanatics from all around Bucks. On the final Saturday in February, Becky brought her offerings into a new arena with her Plants & Prosecco event at The Front Room. The Front Room was the perfect venue for the event; a relaxed, rustic atmosphere created by the untreated, wooden tables and shelves of books in all directions made for the ideal, edgy locale befitting the vibe. The till area usually reserved for coffee making had become a makeshift bar, serving a range of beers, wine and spirits (all vegan, of course) as well as some more unusual soft drinks. We settled down onto a table with a drink, listening to Audio Venom playing some big dance anthems, and waited as Becky and her team brought out delight after delight. Menus on the table had already given us an idea of what was to come, but nothing could have prepared our taste buds for what we were served. Each canape was unique, adding a different range of flavours from the last. Everything was so good that it’s a real task to pick favourites, but our personal highlights included the Pocket Breakfast (a whole meal in a tiny pitta) the Seitan Sliders (the ‘meatiest’ vegan burger I’ve ever tasted) the Palate Cleanser (a well-balanced set of fruit that tasted as fresh as it sounds) the Crispy Cauliflower (like a sweet’n’sour chicken ball but better) and the Caramel & Biscotti Cheesecake (a dessert so unbelievably good that I managed to grab a second!) It was a wonderful event that combined the joy of tipsy dancing with delicious, wholesome food. A massive thank you to Becky and her team for putting on such a great night!

You can find the Began’s van every Friday at High Wycombe market

hiyabucks.com | 51 Taking action on litter – let’s clean the Parish!

Litter is a growing problem in the parish, so let’s do something about it! Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean runs from 22nd March to 23rd April, but it’s something we can do all year. Just grab an empty bag and some gloves and get collecting. Put the rubbish you collect in your bin, recycling, or a parish litter bin.

You could arrange a special litter pick with friends and family, or just take a bag with you whenever you’re out and about. Use the opportunity to remind your children not to drop litter, and to pick it up if they see it.

I’ve registered the villages as the “Bourne Wouldn’t it be great if we all helped End & Wooburn Green Litter Pickers” and make Bourne End and Wooburn you can sign up at www.keepbritaintidy. Green tidy? org. Lots of people and several community groups are signing up. You Karen Savage don’t have to sign up, just get picking. ([email protected])

52 | hiyabucks.com Taking action on litter Let’s all do our bit … – let’s clean the Parish! If you haven’t heard about the plastic pollution in the world you must be living in a cave. Whilst we can’t rid the world of the huge amount of plastic floating in our oceans, or filling up landfill, we can do our bit to reduce the amount of plastic we use.

I know some of you will be thinking… “oh no, not this again!” but some of you will be reading still and thinking ….”ok, what does she want us to do?”. This past month I decided not to buy any more liquid handsoap. Living in a busy household we get through so much handsoap it’s ridiculous (but also good that everyone washes their hands so often). I’ve made it a mission to use only bars of soap from now on. It’s a small step, but if everyone took a small step then, collectively, we would be making a big step. Can anyone help me source a bar of soap that isn’t wrapped in plastic (NOT the way forward)? I’ve been buying a rather expensive soap which is wrapped in paper (tick) but not great for the purse strings (untick). Also, I’m struggling to find a soap dish that isn’t a gimmick – there’s a market out there for good old-fashioned soap dishes (hint hint to our #shoplocal contributors)!

How can you help?

Well, let’s make this page OUR page, mine and yours. Please email me any tips and suggestions you have on reducing the amount of plastic we use, one step at a time. I have a few other tips up my sleeve for next month but I welcome your feedback and contributions.

Please take the time to email me at [email protected] with your thoughts; I can’t do this alone!

Thanks for reading.

56 | hiyabucks.com You may be pleased to know that a small family run micro coffee roastery has started up in Farnham Common. Roast Lab Coffee Roasters offer speciality single-origin Arabica coffee from Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Rwanda.

Wayne and Sarah, along with their little helper (son James aged 2 ½), had a desire to learn everything about coffee; which soon turned into a passion. They have spent most of James’ life setting up Roast Lab Coffee Roasters and hope to pass on their legacy to him one day. They are committed and passionate about doing it right! From sourcing the best quality green beans to methodical roasting techniques, they're committed to providing you with the best possible coffee tasting experience when drinking their precision roasted coffees. Precision roasting? Their 'NovoRoaster' is the reason they are called Roast Lab Coffee Roasters. They told us “The 'NovoRoaster' is a 'fluid-bed' or 'hot-air' roaster. This type of roasting produces a very 'clean' bean as opposed to drum roasting which is very smoky due to the oils released during each roast continually burning on the drum. We believe 'fluid-bed' roasting to be a healthier roasting method. We can also boast near zero carbon emissions due to the afterburner we installed”. A maximum of 2kg of speciality green coffee beans can be roasted per batch meaning a guarantee of consistent inner-bean development and better quality control. Roast profiles are developed for each 'origin' based on density, altitude, moisture content and varietal characteristics. The roast profiles are programmed for repeatable batch roasting that is precise and consistent, batch after batch. Sarah said “As roasters, we need to have certainty that our roasted beans are not over-developed or under-developed which would cause undesirable flavours and aromas. We use a roast colour meter, so we can be assured that our desired roast degree (Light, Medium or Full City) has been achieved. As part of our testing regime, we measure extraction with a coffee refractometer which helps to get the balance right between water temperature, grind size and the ratio of coffee to water. We are able to help our clients to get the best extraction from their coffee equipment”. For most people coffee is a daily ritual; be it first thing in the morning or as a break from daily routines. The next time you have a cup of coffee, take an extra moment to concentrate on the taste and then appreciate the people whose hands and passion produced the cup you're enjoying.
