TRAVEL ADVISORIES While Disney on Ice Presents Road Trip Adventures takes over the Wells Fargo Center, the Flyers are headed on their own customary road trip adventure between Christmas and New Year’s. Over the course of 41 years since hosting the New York Rangers on December 28, 1978, the Flyers have only played one home game between those holidays – on Dec. 27, 2007 vs. Toronto, a year where their trip ran from Dec. 29 – Jan. 8. Although the trip was not a consistent yearly staple prior to 1978, the Flyers still only played 10 home games between the holidays in their first 10 seasons, including three of the four times the club has ever played on Christmas. They have taken a road trip of at least three games around the turn of the calendar in every season since 1979-80, excluding the three seasons where the league was not in action in December.

Here is how the Flyers have fared on their holiday road swing in recent years. (For purposes of tracking these stretches, the trip is considered to be any stretch of consecutive road games between the dates of Dec. 19 and Jan. 7 in a given season. Cities are listed in order of schedule. Bolded opponents are wins, italics are OT/SOL)

This year’s trip (SJS, ANA, LAK, VGK, ARI, CAR) will cover 5,527 air miles based on calculations from WebFlyer.net and does not include the 30 miles between Honda Center and Staples Center. Calculations from other sites may vary.

FLYERS VS. KINGS This is the first of two meetings between the clubs this season. The Kings will come to Philadelphia on January 18.

The Flyers have just one win in the last five games against Los Angeles, going 1-2-2 in that timeframe, but they have won six of their last eight visits here to Staples Center dating back to the start of the 2009-10 season.

18-19 SEASON SERIES

Thursday, November 1, 2018 – Flyers 5, Los Angeles 2 at Staples Center: The Flyers nurtured a one-goal second intermission lead through the third period and finished up with a 5-2 win over the Kings. Ivan Provorov started the scoring with 2:25 left in the first period to make it 1-0, where it stayed until Jeff Carter tied it at 10:04 of the second. Wayne Simmonds answered though with a goal 49 seconds later and then Oskar Lindblom added a goal with 5:55 to play in the middle frame. Ilya Kovalchuk added one right before the period ended, but it was all LA would get on the night; Claude Giroux went on to ice the win with 5:33 to play, and Robert Hagg contributed an empty-netter that went the full length of the ice with just over three minutes left. Brian Elliott made 25 saves to earn the win, while Jack Campbell stopped 26 of 30. Stars of the Game: 1 – Ivan Provorov; 2 – Jeff Carter; 3- Oskar Lindblom.

Thursday, February 7, 2019 – Los Angeles 3, Flyers 2 (SO) at Wells Fargo Center: Jake Voracek scored with 18.2 seconds left on the clock in the third period to force overtime, but the Kings edged out the Flyers in the shootout for the extra point. Los Angeles led 1-0 at the first intermission on a goal by Austin Wagner 8:46 into the game. The Flyers tied it up when Sean Couturier scored at the 7:00 mark of the second period, but the Kings got that back just over 5 ½ minutes later on a goal by Adrian Kempe. There was no further scoring until Voracek put home his tally with an extra attacker out. The Flyers scored the first shootout goal and took a 2-1 lead in the third round, but Anze Kopitar continued the proceedings with a third-round goal and Tyler Toffoli won it in round #6. Anthony Stolarz made 37 saves in absorbing the SOL, while Jonathan Quick made 30 stops in the win. Stars of the Game: 1 – Jonathan Quick; 2 – Sean Couturier; 3 – Austin Wagner.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

With his two assists on Sunday night, Jake Voracek took sole possession of sixth place on the Flyers all-time assist list. He needs 16 more to surpass Mark Recchi for fifth place, at which point he’ll trail only Bob Clarke, Claude Giroux, Brian Propp and Bill Barber. Voracek is 15 games away from 900 for his NHL career. He has four goals and 12 assists for 16 points in his last 17 games.

The Flyers come into tonight’s game in fourth place in the Metropolitan Division, but seventh overall in the entire NHL. Only St. Louis, Boston and Colorado are ahead of the Flyers outside of Metro teams.

The Flyers are allowing 2.77 goals per game, which is seventh-fewest in the league. On New Year’s Eve last season, they were allowing 3.58 goals per game, which was 29th in the league. They’ve given up 108 goals through 39 games this year compared to 136 through 38 games last year.

Philadelphia’s penalty kill enters the game ranked sixth in the league at 83.8 percent. They have gone three consecutive games without allowing a power play goal, killing off nine shorthanded situations in that timeframe.

Travis Konecny was named to the Metropolitan Division All-Star team yesterday. It will be Konecny’s first All-Star appearance. Konecny comes into tonight’s game as the team’s leading scorer with 11 goals and 23 assists for 34 points through 36 games. He’s three assists, 13 goals and 15 points away from his career highs of 24 goals and 25 assists for 49 points set through all 82 games last year.

James van Riemsdyk leads the Flyers in scoring in the month of December with seven goals and five assists for 12 points in 12 games. He’s followed closely by Kevin Hayes, who has four goals and six assists for 10 points in the 12 games. Both van Riemsdyk and Hayes have 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points on the season; for van Riemsdyk, the month has accounted for more than half of his scoring, while Hayes has seen just under half of his points come in December.

Ivan Provorov approaches the halfway point of the season with nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points, which puts him well within range of his career highs of 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points set two seasons ago. Provorov set a new career high in power play goals already when he scored his sixth of the season on Saturday in San Jose in his 38th game of the season.

Provorov has not missed a game in his NHL career and tonight, along with Claude Giroux, will play his 286th consecutive game. That will tie Provorov and Giroux with Jeff Carter and Jake Voracek for the third-longest consecutive game streaks in team history.
