He has taught at Tel Aviv University, Arab man. Suspecting his tutor of espionage, the boy informs the the Ma’aleh School in Jerusalem, New York Jewish underground. University and the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has also written and produced theatre plays in the USA, Israel and France. He is involved in the support of Israeli-Ethiopian filmmakers and is developing new strategies for independent film distribution. He has won many awards and been a member of numerous festival juries including in Istanbul, Bratislava and Mumbai. You have smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife” (2 Samuel 12:9). “Ultimately it is this fraternity that makes it possible, over the past two centuries, for so many millions of people, not so much to kill, as willingly to die for such limited imaginings” (Anderson, 1991, p.224). We started the journey of the representation of the IDF soldier in Israeli cinema at the time where there was no Israeli cinema, because there was no State of Israel. In the first decade of the 21st century, more than sixty years after the establishment of the state, several Israeli films won awards in film festivals all around the world, establishing the “new,” blossoming Israeli cinema. As we observed, contemporary Israeli cinema dismantles the equation created by the early Zionist Realist cinema of nationhood and masculinity. According to Gertz, this cinema does not obliterate the homogeneous Zionist identity; rather, it merges this identity into a broader dialogue of identities and voices: “Instead of simplistically replacing the Hebrew masculine identity with a feminine Jewish one, it integrates both identities and examines them inside and out. This cinema treats space similarly. Instead of replacing the Israeli space with an alternative space, it makes different spaces overlap and commingle. This cinema expresses the crisis in Israeli identity and the attempt to overcome it by combining and blending the spaces, nationalities, and genders created within it” (Gertz, 2003).

Our 13th Annual Cherry Hill Volvo Cars Jewish Film Festival is the most ideal way to share our passion for Judaic movies. The big-screen experience provides an irreplaceable pleasure and opportunity to view these films. Submissions to the Festival are often viewed by our committee members on laptop computers, so we can’t wait for everyone to see the stunning visuals of a film such asAcross the Waters as well as the breathtaking scenery in The Milk Trial and the pleasure of seeing Hedy Lamarr once again, all on the big screen. We are very proud of the 19 films that we have chosen to highlight in this year’s festival. We are fortunate that several guest speakers will be joining us to provide additional insight into the films. They include writers, directors, producers, film stars, film subjects, and local Rabbis. You will get a chance to meet Fleming Meeks who conducted the interview with Hedy Lamarr in Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, Samantha Elisofon and Brandon Polansky, actors starring in Keep the Change, and Daniel Sorochkin, the writer/director of the short Check Please. Other speakers are listed in the brochure. Of course, a festival like ours can only thrive with community support. We are fortunate to live in a community that enjoys the arts and passionately supports Jewish culture.

A ﬁlm by Dan Wolman Based on a True Story Synopsis The film An Israeli Love Story is based on the true story of the love affair between Pnina Gary (Dromi) from Nahalal and Eli Ben-Zvi the son of Rachel Yanait and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi the second president of the State of Israel. The film is set during the turbulent period of pre-state Israel 1947-1948. Margalit (Pnina Gary) meets Eli by chance on a bus and instantly falls in love with him. She tries to get close to him, hoping he'll fall for her, but Eli is too preoccupied with the Palmach* and with smuggling Holocaust survivors into Palestine. Finally the barriers come down and a compelling relationship develops between the two. Margalit moves onto Eli’s kibbutz, Beit Keshet and they set up a date for their wedding but Israel's harsh reality intervenes. *Elite fighting force of the Haganna underground army during the British Mandate.
