f The Twelve Apostles Lesson 8 Study Notes Philip: The Apostle Who Was Slow-Witted Simon the Canaanite: The Apostle Who Was A Revolutionist Text: John 1:43-45. John 1:43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Introduction: Philip is always listed as the fifth person in the list of the Apostles. While he may have not been as prominent as the first four men listed; nevertheless, he seems to be the head of the second grouping of the disciples. We must remember that God is of no respecter of persons so, Philip is not to be considered to be of less importance. Although Philip is mentioned in the four complete lists of the twelve (Matt. 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14; Acts 1:13), it is interesting to observe that John is the only writer to tell us all that is to be said about Philip, yet he is the only one out of the four evangelists who does not quote the list. The first three evangelists give us his name and acquaint us with the fact that he was an apostle, but John loses sight of the dignity of the office that Philip filled and gives us a profile of the man himself with his own individualities and peculiarities. -

Frizzell: Mary and the Biblical Heritage MARY AND THE BffiUCAL HERITAGE Lawrence E. Frizzell* Throughout the ages, the Church and her teachers have often acknowledged that the fourfold Gospel offers only a limited number of passages that feature the Mother of Jesus. Undaunted, the great doctors of the early Church and the the ologians of the Middle Ages found abundant resources for their meditation concerning Mary in the Jewish Scriptures and literature related to the New Testament. The theological premise that God is the principal author of the entire Bible led them to find hints and images of the Messiah everywhere. Recognizing that the link of Jesus to the people of Israel is Mary, his Mother, they rejoiced to find that her coming and her attributes are virtually as ubiquitous as the foreshadow ings of Jesus. The lover fmds reminiscences of the beloved everywhere, and these teachers and their communities were intoxicated with love, thirsting to know Jesus and his Mother more deeply. -

Chapter 1 The Earliest Magdalene: Varied Portrayals in Early Gospel Narratives Edmondo Lupieri In the early writings produced by the followers of Jesus, Mary Magdalene is connected with key events in the narrative regarding Jesus: his death on the cross, his burial, and his resurrection.1 At first sight, her figure seems to grow in importance through time. Her name and figure, indeed, are completely ab- sent from the oldest extant texts written by a follower of Jesus, the authentic letters of Paul.2 This is particularly striking, since 1 Cor 15:5–8 contains the ear- liest known series of witnesses to the resurrection, but only men are named specifically.3 1 All translations are the author’s. The Greek text of the New Testament is from Eberhard Nestle et al., eds., Novum Testamentum Graece, 27th ed. (Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 1993). 2 This phenomenon seems to parallel the minimal importance of the mother of Jesus in Paul’s letters. He mentions her only once and indirectly, when stressing that Jesus was born “of a woman” and “under the Law” (Gal 4:4). Besides using her existence to reaffirm the humanity (and Jewishness) of Jesus (for a similar use of a similar expression to describe the humanity of John the Baptist, see Luke 7:28 / Matt 11:11), Paul does not seem to care about who that “woman” was. This does not mean that Paul is particularly uninterested in Mary Magdalene or in Jesus’s mother, but that generally in his letters Paul does not seem to be interested in any detail regarding the earthly life of Jesus or in the persons who were around him when he was in his human flesh (see further n. -

Was Jesus an Only Child? There are some who claim that Mary had children in addition to Jesus, citing one or more of the following Scriptural passages: “...his mother and his brethren were standing without... ” (Matthew 12:46) “Is this not the carpenter, son of Mary, the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? Do not his sisters live here near us? ” (Mark 6:3) “For even his own brothers did not believe in him. ” (John 7:5) “...with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. ” (Acts 1:14) “...and the Lord ’s brothers... ” (1 Corinthians 9:5) “But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son.” (Matthew 1:25) The Church teaches us that Mary was perpetually virgin and this is what we affirm every time we recite the Confetitor. Why the difference? It comes with the fact that almost 20 centuries have passed since the books of the Bible were written and customs have changed, along with the fact that some people read into the text ’s meanings which were not intended. First century customs cannot be interpreted with 20 th century values. In the first case, what was the custom for calling someone your “brother, ” “sister, ” or using the collective term of “brethren? ” In Genesis 14:14, Lot is called Abraham ’s “brother ” but Genesis 11:27 tells us that Lot was the son of Aran, Abraham ’s brother. This shows that the terms were used to include cousins, but they were not even limited to close relatives (see Deuteronomy 23:7 and Jeremiah 34:9 for examples). -

Adult Sunday School Lesson Nassau Bay Baptist Church December 6, 2020 In this beginning of the Gospel According to Luke, we learn why Luke wrote this account and to whom it was written. Then we learn about the birth of John the Baptist and the experience of his parents, Zacharias and Elizabeth. Read Luke 1:1-4 Luke tells us that many have tried to write a narrative of Jesus’ redemptive life, called a gospel. Attached to these notes is a list of gospels written.1 The dates of these gospels span from ancient to modern, and this list only includes those about which we know or which have survived the millennia. Canon The Canon of Scripture is the list of books that have been received as the text that was inspired by the Holy Spirit and given to the church by God. The New Testament canon was not “closed” officially until about A.D. 400, but the churches already long had focused on books that are now included in our New Testament. Time has proven the value of the Canon. Only four gospels made it into the New Testament Canon, but as Luke tells us, many others were written. Twenty-seven books total were “canonized” and became “canonical” in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, thirty-nine books are included as canonical. Canonical Standards Generally, three standards were held up for inclusion in the Canon. • Apostolicity—Written by an Apostle or very close associate to an Apostle. Luke was a close associate of Paul. • Orthodoxy—Does not contradict previously revealed Scripture, such as the Old Testament. -

When he was in Bethany reclining at table in the house of Simon the leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of perfumed oil, costly genuine spikenard. She broke the alabaster jar and poured it on his head. There were some who were indignant. C. “Why has there been this waste of perfumed oil? It could have been sold for more than three hundred days’ wages and the money given to the poor.” N. They were infuriated with her. Jesus said, 1 †. “Let her alone. Why do you make trouble for her? Directly opposite facing the congregation is the wall with the new painting of the Apostles. The journey of faith we all make begins with the teaching of the Apostles, leads us through Baptism, toward altar and the Apostles guiding us by pulpit and altar to Christ himself pictured so clearly on the three-fold front of the Tabernacle. The lively multi-experiences of all those on the journey are reflected in the multi-colors of the pillars. W e are all connected by Christ with whom we journey, He the vine, we the branches, uniting us in faith, hope, and love connected to the Apostles and one another. O ur newly redone interior, rededicated on June 16, 2013, was the result of a collaboration between our many parishioners, the Intelligent Design Group (architect), the artistic designs of New Guild Studios, and the management and supervision of many craftsmen and technicians by Landau Building Company. I n March 2014, the Landau Building Company, in a category with four other projects, won a first place award from the Master Builders Association in the area of “Excellence in Craftsmanship by a General Contractor” for their work on the renovations at St. Ursula. A fter the extensive renovation to the church, our parish community began asking questions about the Apostles on the Sanctuary wall and wishing to know who they were.
