Hieracium is now included. This edition is ―regionally aligned‖, that is, several species which are county rare in Northumberland, but were narrowly rejected for the Durham first edition, are now included. There is now a site index. Cover picture—Dark Red Helleborine at Bishop Middleham Quarry, its premier British site. Introduction Many counties are in the process of compiling a County Rare Plant Register, to assist in the study and conservation of their rare species. The process is made easier if the county has a published Flora and a strong Biological Records Centre, and Durham is fortunate to have Gordon Graham's Flora and the Durham Wildlife Trust‘s ―Recorder" system. We also have a Biodiversity project, based at Rainton Meadows, to carry out conservation projects to protect the rare species. The purpose of this document is to introduce the Rare Plant Register and to give an account of the information that it holds, and the species to be included. -

Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse Zonation and Implementation Plan 2019 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is subject to duties set out in the Scottish Government’s 4th “Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse (Scotland) 2018 - Statutory guidance on keeping land free of litter and refuse, and roads clean” issued under section 87(7) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (as amended) www2.gov.scot/Resource/0053/00535494.pdf This Code sets out two duties. Every relevant public body must, so far as practicable – 1: ensure its land (or land under its control), is kept clear of litter and refuse, and 2: ensure public roads (for which it is responsible) are kept clean. For each relevant land, SNH must - assess and allocate our land into Zones identify which duty response times apply and which response band introduce a monitoring regime to ensure that our zones are retaining the Grade A standard or, if areas have deteriorated, that restorative action is required, and make our findings easily accessible to members of the public. Definitions References here to land, zones, litter and refuse are as defined in the Code. Appendix 2 contains a summary of zone and grade definitions for convenience. Assessment and zonation of SNH Land SNH Land comprises all lands that SNH owns, leases, or holds under a Nature Reserve Agreement (under section 16 of the National Parks & Access to the Countryside Act 1949) for which SNH has primary management responsibility. Appendix 1 shows, for each SNH Land, SNH’s assessment against the criteria (footfall and litter sources) and conclusions on zonation and response times. -

Introduction The Scottish Nature Omnibus (SNO) is a survey of the adult population in Scotland which now runs on a biennial basis. It was first commissioned by SNH in 2009 to measure the extent to which the general public is engaged with SNH and its work. Seventeen separate waves of research have been undertaken since 2009, each one based on interviews with a representative sample of around 1,000 adults living in Scotland; interviews with a booster sample of around 100 adults from ethnic minority groups are also undertaken in each survey wave to enable us to report separately on this audience. The SNO includes a number of questions about the public’s awareness of and visits to National Nature Reserves (see Appendix). This paper summarises the most recent findings from these questions (August 2019), presenting them alongside the findings from previous waves of research. Please note that between 2009 and 2015 the SNO was undertaken using a face to face interview methodology. In 2017, the survey switched to an on-line interview methodology, with respondents sourced from members of the public who had agreed to be part of a survey panel. While the respondent profile and most question wording remained the same, it should be borne in mind when comparing the 2017 and 2019 findings with data from previous years that there may be differences in behaviour between people responding to a face to face survey and those taking part in an online survey that can impact on results. -

Studies on nocturnal Lepidoptera were carried out on the Laukėnai raised bog and the adjacent wet forest in 2001. Species composition and abundance were evaluated and compared. The species richness was much higher in the forest than at the bog. The core of each lepidopteran community was composed of 22 species with an abundance of higher than 1.0% of the total catch. Tyrpho- philous Hypenodes humidalis (22.0% of all individuals) and Nola aerugula (13.0%) were the dominant species in the raised bog community, while tyrphoneutral Pelosia muscerda (13.6%) and Eilema griseola (8.3%) were the most abundant species at the forest site. Five tyrphobiotic and nine tyrphophilous species made up 43.4% of the total catch on the bog, and three and seven species, respectively, at the forest site, where they made up 9.2% of all individuals. 59% of lepidopteran species recorded on the bog and 36% at the forest site were represented by less than five individuals. The species compositions of these communities showed a weak similarity. Habitat preferences of the tyrphobiontic and tyrphophilous species and dispersal of some of the species between the habi- tats are discussed. INTRODUCTION (1996). E-mail: [email protected] Introduction The Notigal ė telmological preserve (1391 ha) is located in Kupiškis administrative district (Northern Lithuania). It is protected since 1974 (State Service for Protected Areas…, 2008). The raised bog occupies approximately 552 ha of the whole territory. The efforts to study the entomofauna of the preserve were rather sporadic. The first faunistic data on Lepidoptera occurring in the Notigal ė bog were published by A. Palionis (1932). He recorded 14 species of butterflies and moths ( Papilio machaon, Plebeius argus , Thalera fimbrialis, Eulithis testata, E. populata, Macrothylacia rubi, Euthrix potatoria, Saturnia pavonia, Orgyia recens, O. antiqua, O. antiquoides, Diacrisia sannio, Amphipoea lucens, and Coenophila subrosea ). Later, some additional studies were carried out by A. Manikas (Kazlauskas, 1984, 2008; Ivinskis et al., 1990), and G. Švitra (unpublished data). More detailed studies on the composition of nocturnal moths occurring in the Notigal ė bog were carried out in 2000. The newly retrieved faunistic data were analysed and compared with the data obtained from the other bogs of Lithuania, showing some environmental similarities (Dapkus, 2003, 2004a, 2004b, 2004c), but the entire list of species is not yet published. The aim of this paper is to provide supplementary data on the species composition of nocturnal and day-active Lepidoptera recorded in the Notigal ė raised bog. Material and Methods The study on the butterflies and moths of the Notigal ė raised bog was carried out mainly in 2000. -

Besondere Beachtung erhalten die Arten küstentypischer Lebensräume wie Sanddünen und Sandstrände sowie die der Moore und an jungdiluviale Ablagerungen gebundenen. Die Falter wur- den mit verschiedenen Methoden beobachtet, teilweise in ihrem Verhalten, und die Larven mit ihrer Bindung an Wirtspflanzen und an ökologische Bedingungen ihrer Habitate betrachtet. Das Artenpaar Aporophyla lutulenta und Aporophyla luenebur- gensis wird nach dem biologischen Artbegriff aufgrund differenter Habitate, auf- grund verschiedener Bionomie und aufgrund eines unterschiedlichen Habitus der Falter diskutiert. Der Artstatus des Taxons Euxoa tritici (= crypta) wird diskutiert. Die Variabilität der Falter von Euxoa cursoria wird als möglicher Beginn einer Artauf- spaltung dargestellt. Die Art Cucullia praecana wird als Erstfund für die Fauna Deutschlands vorgestellt. Hydraecia ultima, Luperina nickerlii, Mesogona oxalina, Polymixis lichenea und Noctua interposita sind in den letzten Jahren als Erstnach- weise für Schleswig-Holstein, neben weiteren für das Bundesland neue Arten aus den Jahren vor 2002, festgestellt worden (nach Gaedike et al. 2017). More than a hundred years ago Mr. Joseph Alder published the invaluable Catalogues of "The Land and Freshwater Mollusca Found in the Vicinity of Newcastle-on-Tyne" which have been our stand by ever since. In 1874 Mr. W. D. Sutton brought Alders list up to date, and various lists of localities have been published from time to time, scattered in various journals.
