Women of the New Testament

Sapphira Acts 5. Sapphira and her husband sell land, but secrectly keep some of the profits for themselves. They lied to Peter about it, and they both died on the spot.

Anna the Prophetess :36-38. Meets Mary and as they present Jesus at the temple – she proclaims Jesus as the redeemer of the people.

Anointing of Jesus :36-50. She is described as having “lived a sinful life.” Different than the other 3 anointings of Jesus in :6-13, Mark 14:3-9, and John 12:1-8.

Dorcas (Tabitha) Acts 9. A widow who was charitable towards other widows and women. She dies, and then Peter raises her from the dead.

Exorcism of Syropheonian (Canaanite) woman’s daughter Mark 7:24-30 & :21-28. She asks Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter. Jesus tells her “it’s not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” She persists and Jesus heals her daughter.

Peter’s mother-in-law Matthew 8:14-15, :29-31, :38-41. She has a high fever, and Jesus heals her.

Woman in adultery John 7:53-8:11. Woman accused of committing adultery, Jesus tells the accusers that the one without sin can cast the first stone. The earliest Greek manuscripts do not include this story.

Martha and Mary :38-42. Jesus visits their home. Mary listens to Jesus teach while continues with preparations. John 11. Jesus raises their brother, Lazarus, from the dead. Martha proclaims that “God will do whatever Jesus asks.” John 12. Meal held their house. Mary anoints Jesus with perfume.

Sick woman :10-17. Jesus heals a woman on the Sabbath who had been crippled for 18 years.

Bleeding woman :25-34, :20-22, :43-48. She had been bleeding for 12 years. She believed that if she touched Jesus’ cloak she would be healed. Her faith heals her.

Joanna Luke 8:2-3. Healed by Jesus, one of Jesus’ disciples, helped financially support Jesus’ ministry “out of her own means.”

Lydia Acts 16. Seller of purple cloth. One of the first Greek converts to Christianity.

Mary Magdalene Traveled with Jesus and his disciples. Present at Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Mentioned 12 times in the , more than most of the disciples. Magdalene most likely from her city of origin, Magdala. With Joanna, helped financially support Jesus’ ministry “out of her own means.” Luke 8 also mentions she had 7 demons driven out of her. Not the same woman who anoints Jesus in Luke 7:36-50.

Mary, mother of James Mark 16:1, :10, :56. Present at Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Mary, mother of Jesus Luke’s describes the visiting her, the , and her family’s visit to the temple when Jesus is 12 years old. During Jesus’ ministry, she is present at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11), Jesus’ crucifixion, and in Acts 1:26 where she is mentioned alongside the disciples.

Widow of Nain Luke 7:11-17. Her only son dies, Jesus has pity on her, and raises him from the dead.

Phoebe Romans 16:1-2. “Deacon and helper of many” – only time a woman is referenced by these attributes in the New Testament.

Priscilla and Aquila Mentioned in Acts 18, Romans 16:3, 1 Corinthians 16:19, and 2 Timothy 4:19. Also mentioned as a couple. Priscilla and her husband were missionaries – a preacher and teacher in the early church. She corrects a man’s incorrect teaching in the Synagogue (Acts 18:24-28).

Salome Mark 15:20. Present at Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Samaritan woman at well :4-26. After this encounter she becomes a great witness to the Gospel message.

Susanna With Mary Magdalene and Joanna, helped financially support Jesus’ ministry “out of her own means.”

Present at Jesus’ Crucifixion Matthew: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, the mother of the sons of , and many women from Galillee. Mark: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Luke: Women who had followed Jesus from . John: Jesus’ mother and aunt, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
