Dear Parishioners,

Many may not be familiar with today’s feast. It is always commemorated on February 2nd. So it is a rare occasion for this to fall on a Sunday. And since it is a Feast of the Lord it takes precedence in our Divine Liturgy. Th e Feast we commemorate today is the Presentation of the Infant Jesus by St. Joseph and Our Lady to God in His Temple in Jerusalem. Th is is seen and celebrated as another ‘epiphany’ insofar as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. In the and some Eastern Catholic Churches, it is one of the twelve Great Feasts. It is called the Feast of the Encounter. Th e Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is a combined feast, commemorating the Jewish practice of the purifi cation of the mother after childbirth and the presentation of the child to God in the Temple. Known as the Feast of the Purifi cation of Mary and the Feast of Candlemas (because the blessing and procession of candles on this day acknowledges Christ as the light of the nations), this day is also called, as I mentioned, the Feast of Encounter because the , represented by the Baby Jesus, encountered the Old Testament, represented by Simeon and Anna. Joseph off ered two pigeons in the Temple as sacrifi ce for the purifi cation of Mary after her childbirth and for the presentation and redemption ceremonies performed for the Baby Jesus. Th is feast originated in Jerusalem in the 4th century and spread to Rome by the middle of the 5th century under its Greek name, Hypapánte.

In many countries the Nativity Scene is left up until this day. As a matter of fact, today it is taken down in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. Th is is a reminder that the Christmas stories about Jesus in St. Luke’s come to an end forty days after Christmas. So technically today is the end of our Christmas celebrations.

Candles used for the year are usually blest in Church on this feast. Candles are used for light and the feast is a reminder that this “Light of Christ” is entrusted to us to burn brightly in our world. At our Baptism, each of us, or through our parents, were given a candle lit from the Pascal (Easter or Christ) Candle. Th at fl ame, ignited from Jesus, reminds us of the mission we have been given…to preach Jesus and to Baptize. We are called to be lights to our world by the faith that emanates from our lives.

February 1st is celebrated as “Four Chaplains Sunday.” Julia Duin told this story in the Washington Times on Sunday, February 1, 2009. Just after midnight on February 3rd, 1943, an act of extraordinary unselfi shness by a group of men became a legend of martyrdom and sacrifi ce. When the Germans just south of Greenland torpedoed the Army ship Dorchester that night, its passengers and crew had 25 minutes to get off the boat. As 902 people went for the life jackets, it quickly was discovered there weren’t near enough. Of the 13 lifeboats, only two functioned. In the ship’s fi nal minutes, Methodist chaplain Rev. George Lansing Fox, Rabbi Goode, Dutch Reformed minister Rev. Clark V. Poling and Fr. John P. Washington, a Roman Catholic priest, were helping passengers leave the vessel. Th en four men appeared all of them without life jackets. Th e chaplains quickly gave up their own vests and went down with the ship, perishing in the freezing water. Survivors saw them, locked arm in arm, praying and singing the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” just before the ship dove beneath the waves. It was a night as dramatic as the sinking of the Titanic but without a blockbuster movie to record the drama. “Th e Four Immortal Chaplains,” as they are now known, have been honored many times, including on a stamp issued in their honor by the U.S. Postal Service. Th e fi rst Sunday in February is now known as “Four Chaplains Sunday.” Th ey presented and off ered themselves completely for the well being of others. (Quoted by Rev. Fr. Njoku Canice Chukwuemeka, C.S.Sp).

A truly remarkable story that speaks of the best of human nature. May we, like the four chaplains, be that light of hope and mercy in our world.

We had a wonderful celebration of Catholic Schools Week here at St. Mary’s. We were able to highlight the wonderful work we do in education and Catholic formation. I continue to encourage you to consider the wonderful benefi ts of a Catholic School Education.

In Jesus, Fr. Bob J Stewards of God’s Gifts In the Second Reading, we read, “Because He Himself was tested through what He suff ered, He is able to help those who are being tested.” When we read this, we should be overjoyed to know that our God is one who cares for us so deeply.

Mary and Joseph raise the child Jesus in accordance with the law of . For those of you who are parents (or grandparents, godparents, etc.), take some time this week to pray with your child and teach them something about the Faith. You are your child’s fi rst catechist and play a huge role in your child’s future.

Church of Saint Mary | 8 Religious Education Preparing for the Sacrament of Reconciliation

We are at the sacred time of year when many young children are preparing to receive their fi rst Sacrament of Reconciliation. Christ Himself established this beautiful sacrament as a means to receive the grace of His love and forgiveness. Saint John Paul II especially spoke about the necessity for penance. In his September 1987 homily he said “Confession is an act of honesty and courage – an act of entrusting ourselves, beyond sin, to the mercy of a loving and forgiving God.” Working together with dedicated Catechists, the children are preparing for this wonderful way in which Christ comes into our very lives. On February 4th and 6th during class time, the children will spend time in Church, viewing the confessionals and practice the Act of Contrition Prayer together. Talking about this sacrament of healing as a family is another way to help them prepare in a blessed way. Adult Faith Formation Th is week the RCIA group will continue their study of the Sacraments and focus on the Sacrament of Matrimony. Th e Catechumens will be prayed over during the 10:30 AM Mass. Nicholas refurbished a seating area behind the Pagan-Fletcher Restoration, a historic building in Valley Stream. At the same time, Edwin worked with the Valley Stream Historical Society, to replant the house’s herb garden and restore its Victorian garden and birdbath as a tribute to the founder of the Society. Edwin and Nicholas are the sons of proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Ortiz. Congratulations to the entire Ortiz family on this wonderful achievement!

A special congratulations to Jacqueline James ’21, who was selected to sing a solo in the Division 5 Mixed Chorus! Fr. Ebenezer Akesseh Presents to High School Faculty

On Friday, January 17, St. Mary’s High School faculty enjoyed a presentation by our own Fr. Ebenezer Akesseh, who recently received his doctorate in theology from the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Ebenezer, a native of Ghana, has been periodically in residence at St. Mary’s Parish while completing his degree. His doctoral studies focused on moral theology, with a particular emphasis on applying the Thomistic tradition to contemporary social issues. In his talk for the assembled high school teachers, Fr. Ebenezer outlined the structure of virtue and vice while drawing on the insights of Aristotle and St. . His talk was particularly helpful in illuminating the best ways our teachers can help their teenage students grow in the virtues of fortitude, temperance, justice, and prudence. He pointed out that these are the foundations of all the virtues and a vital component of a happy and fulfilling life. The faculty were most grateful for his illuminating talk and practical insights. Perhaps his most memorable remark was a quote from St. Pope Paul VI: “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.” Printemps Saint Mary's High School Gaels ParentS' Association à Ladies' Night Out Springtime in Paris Grand Raffle Wish List Items R Vacation Club or similar, or week/weekend use of a vacation home RAirline Gift Card valued above $500 with luggage RBroadway Tickets with Limo or Restaurant Gift Card RItem of Fine Jewelry Raffle Wish List Items RWine Tasting RProm Package for a Boy - gift certificate RAir Pods, new model for a tux rental, limousine, flower shop RCatered Dinner RSpa Day RRestaurant Gift Certificates RSalon Gift Cards RCigar and Whiskey Basket RFine Jewelry RWine Refrigerator RElectronics RFine Wine Basket RName Brand Handbags and Totes RCrystal Wine Decanter and Glasses (Longchamp, etc.) RDancing Lessons from Fred Astaire RAir Fryer Dance Studio RMulti Cooker RCooking Class for Adults RGym/Workout Gift Certificates RProm Package for a Girl - gift certificate RSports Events Tickets to dress shop, salon, flower shop RConcert Tickets
