• Following a healthy financial report, the committee approved an Extra-ordinary General Meeting to propose a reduction in the Annual Subscription to £12. • Co-ordinators to be invited to request funding for new equipment where this will help with the running of their group. • The Beacon system is working well and most members have now provided email addresses, further appeal for email contact information to be made. • Need for a Welfare Officer role to be given further consideration at the Co- ordinators meeting. • The work of identifying disabled access at our venues is ongoing. All the details are being made available on the website. • Purchase of IT equipment could be approved if it is found that enough members require training. • Consideration also to be given to possible links with Age UK who have courses available at their Queens Road office. • Geoff Pike to stand down as Development Officer. Mac McKechnie agreed to take on the role. The committee consider this job may be too big for one person so an appeal is to go out for other volunteers. • It was agreed that a mileage allowance of 25p a mile plus car parking costs can be claimed by committee members not able to use public transport when formally re- quested to represent BU3A at events taking place outside the Borough. • Need to review the combinations of group names to make it more understandable to use the listings and calendars etc. • Age UK Barnsley has appointed two people to look at the problem of isolation in the area. A meeting to be set up with Age UK in order that we can work closely with them on this project.

THE STRINGALONGS ENTERTAIN

“The annual Senior Citizens lunch at the Burghwallis produced a few surprises that would rock both Strictly Come Dancing and the X Factor. This year the atmosphere was bolstered by the perform- ance of a group of 12 in a ukulele band and the surprise appearance of the vicar Rev Richard Walton singing “Im getting married in the morning” and Councillor Dave Maxwell’s hula skirt swayed to the rendition of “She wears red feathers and a hula hula skirt. These hidden talents delighted the pensioners who also enjoyed the festive lunch.” Taken from Burghwallis Parish Council website Page 6

Hello, this is just a brief note to introduce myself. I’m Trevor Winslow, recently retired after a varied career rang- ing from china clay in Cornwall via offshore pipelines in the North Sea and infrastructure maintenance in Scotland to company secretary in . Some of you will know my wife Sue who has been a member of U3A for a few years and attends groups like Posh Puds and Jewellery. I have only recently become a member of U3A and have not joined any groups yet - so many to choose from! I have “volunteered” to give Sue Stokes a hand with the Buzz - it’s a steep learning curve but hopefully I will be useful soon. It would help me to find my way around if you could copy me on any Buzz related information you send to Sue. My email address is [email protected]

Geoff Pike is standing down as the Development Of- ficer and Mac McKechnie is taking over the reins. We thank Geoff for all his efforts and wish Mac all the best in his new role.

Hi Everyone, My name is Mac McKechnie, and I am looking forward to the challenge of be- ing BU3A’s Development Officer. I am not yet aware of all the tasks I should be doing, but will do my best to grow into the role. Above all, and above any written “task list”, I hope to be a resource to the group, as I believe that we must be constantly evolving, evaluating, devel- oping and changing to meet the needs of individual members. A main part of my role, as I see it, is encouragement and supporting Group Coordinators to more fully utilise the benefits of the “Beacon” communication tool and make it work for us. Our Chairman talks a lot about “making eye contact” as an effective communication tool, and he makes a very good point - we do need volunteers to step forward from time to time to coordinate groups etc. I do think a large part of my role is to support new volunteers whilst they establish groups, or newly coordinate existing groups when change happens. Any member please feel free to contact me at any time. I shall not leave my contact number here (it is on the Contact List that comes with the Buzz), but you can contact me at: [email protected] Not much development news to report on (or there probably is, but being new in post I don’t know it yet): • “Relax Group” starting (see details elsewhere in the Buzz) • The Conversational German Group is now full and a second group is starting (see ad- vert) • It is nearly Crown Green Bowling Season. The Groups meet Monday to Friday. You can play as a “casual” member as and when you choose, or in a league. Contact any Crown Green Bowling Coordinator listed in the Contact List for costs and more informa- tion. • I understand the “Old Blowers” (brass instruments group) are seeking a new tuba player, or anyone who is interested in playing a brass instrument. • Magic Group are seeking new members. Spaces available • Posh Puds - Helen Webber and Chrissie White are pleased to announce Posh Puds will run from THURSDAY 23rd March. It will take place in Chrissie’s home from 10am until 12noon on 6 consecutive weeks. Anyone interested should contact Chrissie or place their name on the interest list which is available at the monthly meeting. • Bread Making Group will be starting at Birdwell Centre 1-3pm on April 4th, then 11th, 18th, 25th, May 2nd, 9th and 16th. If you are interested please contact Chris North (number is on Contact List) • Poetry Group - if you want to join the Poetry Group which meets on the third Thursday of the month from 1pm contact Michael Midgley (number on Contact List) • There has been some suggestion of a Dominoes Group; some dominoes playing is available with the Board Games Group - contact Martin King through the Contact List Darts - it has been agreed to shelve darts for the time being. However, if there is a resur- gence of interest, please let me know and we can revisit this. Please note: The Third Age Friends Group is no longer running. The Coordinator has had to stand down and no-one has come forward to run the group. BARNSLEY AND DISTRICT U3A Page 9 SPRING 2017

We listened to the song ‘Tu es le soleil de ma vie’ sung by Sacha Distel and Brigitte Bardot, the week before St Valentine’s Day, and this inspired us all to contribute to the following poem-

Tu es le soleil de ma vie You are the sunshine of my life Tu es la crème anglais dans mon dessert You are the custard in my dessert Tu es mon mécanicien favori You are my favourite mechanic Tu es la joie dans mon coeur You are the joy in my heart Tu es le bonheur de mon jour You are the happiness of my day Tu es l’amour de ma vie You are the love of my life Tu es chaque souffle que je prends You are each breath that I take Tu es les bulles dans mon champagne You are the bubbles in my champagne Et la cerise dans mon cocktail And the cherry in my cocktail Tu es le sucre dans mon thé You are the sugar in my tea Tu es la crème sur mon gâteau You are the cream on my cake Tu es la réponse de mes prières You are the answer to my prayers Tu es l’eau dans ma douche You are the water in my shower Tu es l’étincellement dans mes yeux You are the sparkle in my eyes Tu es le diamant dans ma bague You are the diamond in my ring Tu es la confiture dans mon beignet T You are the jam in my doughnut u es le soleil de ma vie You are the sunshine of my life Tous les jours. Conversational German Group

ü Going to Germany on Holiday? ü Want to learn a new language? ü Want to learn at an easy pace? ü Want to have a laugh whilst learning? ü Want to be in at the start of a new group, and help it develop?

This latest group within Barnsley U3A, is the new Conversational German Group, and has had meetings in January and February, and guess what? At the time of writing this (Mid February) the group is full, and just about to start a waiting list. We meet every other Thursday 2.00pm – 4.00pm at Alder Close Community Centre in Mapplewell. Why not arrange to visit us if you are not a group member and see what we do? Feel free to contact Mac McKechnie by email at: [email protected]

If any member is unable to pick up their copy of The Buzz from the Monday monthly meeting at Priory Campus, copies will be avail- able from Age UK Barnsley offices on Eldon Street, oppo- site the Parkway Cinema, from the Wednesday. Mem- bers will be asked to sign for copies taken; they will be al- lowed to take copies on be- half of other members. Page 11

As we get older it’s common knowledge that our brain cells begin to die off, disappear or just plain give up on us!! Forgetful? Now where did I put that receipt? What have I come in the bedroom for? Oh what was his name! I can’t remember? Does this ring a bell? It does with me, and so I had this idea last summer when I was in the middle of organis- ing our anniversary event, of doing something about this. There is clear evidence backed up by the medical profession, that the best way to keep Dementia at bay is to exercise the brain. They say that to learn a differ- ent language or learn to read music and play an instru- ment is one of the best ways to keep the brain cells active. Well, if this is true, then I could help our members to stave off the onset of Dementia and Alzheimer’s , because of my musical experience and background. That said, I decided to establish a group called the ‘Old Blowers’ and so in November of 2016 some 12 of our members joined up to form the ‘Old Blowers’ Now what surprised me more than anything was the enthusiasm of our members. We be- gan by teaching them the fundamental rudiments of music, this was simply learning to ‘read’ the basic musical meanings, understanding the notes, and what they meant. This took up the first hour of the sessions followed by the fun bit - actually picking up a brass instrument and making a sound! Fast forward 8 weeks, (take out two weeks for Christmas) and we have an ensemble that is now reading and playing music!! Ask me if I am im- pressed, you bet I am. Ask the Old Blowers them- selves if they are enjoying the experience - you bet they are!! Get ready because it is my intention that we will be performing in front of our members by the summer of 2017. I am so very proud! Max Senior, Coordinator ‘Old Blowers’ Page 12

We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at Birdwell Community Centre. New mem- bers are very welcome.

March 7 Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin This book has been described as ‘a chilling, mesmerizing novel that combines the best of modern forensic thrillers with the detail and drama of historical fiction’. April 4 War poems These can be from any war and the English version of a poem from any country. May 2 The Devil’s Cave Bruno Chief of Police 5 by Martin Walker. Bruno is a ‘chef de police’ in a small town in France (St Denis). He has a murder case to solve – one linked to a chateau and an old reclusive woman. It will be interesting to see how this book compares to ‘Death at La Fenice’. June 6 The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry This is the story of a lady who is nearly one hundred years old. Her story becomes an alternative secret history of Ireland’s changing character and also the story of a life blighted by terrible mistreatment and ignorance, yet marked still by love, passion and hope. July 1 The Muse by Jessie Burton This book is set in both London and Spain and begins with Odette Bastien who finds work as a typist in an art gallery in London after travelling from Trinidad. August 1 The Lake House by Kate Morton The story begins with Alice Edevane in June 1933 but then forges ahead to 1973 when she is asked about a past she has spent her life trying to escape.

Several new members have joined us in the last few months, and are getting to grips with one or more of the games we have available. If you are interested in finding out more about the group why not have a look at our entry in the BU3A website. This in- cludes a link to an inventory of the games we can access, and some introductory notes on one of our most popular, Mah Jong. We are always interested to discover additional games, new or more traditional. This photo shows a possible ‘winning hand’ in Mah Jong.

If you want to find out how this might be, go to our website link: it will provide some clues!

Ring me if you are interested.

Sometime last year, our esteemed Chairman Alan Swann threw out a challenge to members. Along with this throwing out, comes eye contact with Alan. Now I am sure that I al- ways keep my eyes averted when in the company of Alan as I am well aware of how he can persuade members to do things or take on certain roles within our U3A - but I still suc- cumbed to his appeal for some-one to take on the job of pre- paring a presentation for our regular monthly meetings. His suggestion was for someone to do something relating to television in the past. He mentioned an old childhood fa- vourite ‘Crackerjack’ and I offered to have a go as it was one of my favourite TV programmes whilst I was growing up. Barnsley U3A’s version of Crackerjack was born. I enlisted the help of Beth Rudkin and Sandra Booth and offered parts to Alan and our Vice Chairman Ernest Bradley. They couldn’t really refuse could they? I enjoyed doing the presentation and thank Alan, Ernest, Sandra and Beth for being willing to take part even though they had no idea what was going to happen - that was deliberate as I wanted Alan and Ernest’s part to be a surprise. Their roles could be seen on the front and back covers of the last Buzz. Everyone played their parts beautifully and entered into the spirit of what was just a little bit of fun. I ask myself now why I put another idea to Alan based on the idea of writing letters. Now my head gets filled with all sorts of ideas and sometimes these ideas just won’t go back to their little hole at the back of my mind so I mentioned this idea to Alan. He said ok so away I went to find some more willing participants. Thankfully I found a wonderful team who were willing to involve them- selves. Thank you to Sandra, Trudy, Betty and Mac. I will mention Geoff here as he was going to be a part of the presentation but real life, as it does, got in the way when he had to attend a fu- neral. Thank you Geoff for being willing and attending our meetings to prepare. I thought this presentation would be easier than the ‘Crackerjack’ one as we were going to put this together as a group. Ha! How daft can someone be? (Answers on a postcard please!) I forgot about the demands of our wonderful U3A. Trying to get everyone together at the same time is not easy as we all do different things within the U3A and at different times. We did even- tually manage to get together just once. Other meetings were with two or three of us at a time but we did it. We got through it and we all hope those who attended the February meeting en- joyed the letters we shared with you. I know some certainly did as they came to me at the end of the meeting to tell me they did. To keep our U3A alive and growing (not just in numbers but in content as well) we need to try out different things. Beth’s Plantagenet History Group entertained at the November meeting but un- fortunately I was still on holiday so missed it. The Facebook Group are going to be presenting something in the next couple of months and I am looking forward to it though I have no idea what it will be about. I hope Alan won’t mind me doing this but I am now throwing out a challenge to other members to come up with ideas for meetings - the more diverse the ideas the better. Variety, they say, is the spice of life. Lynn Maloney Page 14

June 12 2017 Adwick Washlands, an RSPB reserve. Meet in the car park between 9.30 and 9.45am for another circular walk.

I will provide more detailed directions and information nearer the time of each meeting.

We have yet to visit for our February get together and in March it is Potteric Carr, the re-vamped Wildlife venue near Doncaster.

After our Christmas meeting we gathered at the Rivers Meet cafe at Methley and thoroughly en- joyed our food and could have a good chat because the first rule of birdwatching is to stay quiet, which we find very difficult!

And, we all have much to learn about bird recognition and had been delighted to spot and cor- rectly identify a pair of stonechats at Old Moor in January. However, at NatureQuest this bird had been photographed by the guest speaker who said the male was clearly a first-year juve- nile, so we have much to learn.

You don’t need to put your name on if you don’t want to as this is purely to help us gauge interest and existing skills, to see where the need is greatest. Please tick all that apply to you then cut this questionnaire out of the Buzz or, if you’re reading this on-line, print the page and bring it to the April monthly meeting for collection. Don’t worry if you don’t know what a particular question is asking, you will know later if we get this right!

Our decision to meet in each others homes has been very successful and I thank the members for their hospitality (and cake).

My contact number is in the Buzz list. Please contact me if you would like to join us. Sylvia Webster

We have been made aware of a couple of scams recently that members need to be alert to. 1. This is based on the “Postcode Lottery”. A telephone caller rings to say you have won a prize and asks you to ring a number to confirm the authenticity of the organisation. DO NOT RING THIS NUMBER. If you have any queries, contact them through their website. 2. This is based on “BT”. You get a call to say you have a fault with your router and they will help you fix it: “Go to your computer and turn it on”, etc. DO NOT RESPOND TO THEIR REQUEST. If you have any queries, contact BT Security on 0800 661 44.

The Difference You Make

I know my life - You don't, Made to feel like giving up - I won't Cries that fall on your deaf ears, you will never see my tears I'm not an attention seeker I just seek a bit of comfort, The significance of my life seems pretty clear, I never wanted violins of sympathy Just support that could eradicate the fear, but I will breach the walls of darkness, Reach out to your heart through the crowds of the heartless, My Life can be changed by the difference you make.

Tears roll down a broken frail frown, my Heart is torn, my head hangs down Whispering softly to myself, making believe I am someone else I wait in darkness alone again, Sit and stare at my room walls so bare Dying inside does anyone, including you, really care? One more cuppa before I go to bed, Couple of aspirin for an aching head I dread tomorrow another day, Waiting for night is the easiest way My Life can be changed by the difference you make.

We cannot tell the precise moment when making a difference is framed. Filling a glass drop by drop, there is at last the drop which makes it run over. You making a difference is at last the drop which makes my heart run over. A glass half empty it is simply that, half empty and incomplete A glass half full yet in receipt of drops will fill drop by fulfilling drop Those that know me I see for what you do, rather than what you say My Life can be changed by the difference you make. Welcome The fees this year will be £30 for Bowling League members and, if you are a new member to the League add £10 registration fee (this is a one-off payment). Casual members will be £20 for the year (and this year we will get 31 weeks bowl- ing). If you wish to play as and when, this will cost £1.50 per day. All you need is a pair of flat shoes – bowls are provided if you need some. Please note if you wish to bowl on a certain day of the week (Monday – Friday 10am- 12noon), you must first check with the Coordinator for that day – this will then be your day to bowl. Members paying £20 can also play on any day of the week but they must contact that day’s Coordinator before attending, as should those wanting to play as and when. Barnsley Crown Green Bowling Leagues The new season is almost upon us. Matches are expected to start at the beginning of April. We intend to enter two teams in the same competitions as last year. If you were in the 2016 squads, I will assume that you will be joining again. If not, please give me a call as soon as possible. We are still in need of new players so, if you would like to play, please contact myself or Roy Marsden. If there is enough support we will run practice sessions for League bowlers (and pro- spective League bowlers) for 3 Wednesdays in March – 15th, 22nd, 29th. These sessions will be run under match conditions between 2 and 4pm at Ardsley Bowling Club. If you are interested, please be present at 1.30pm so that matches can be arranged and scorecards made out. There will be some “light” coaching in subjects such as communi- cation and etiquette. If you wish to attend any of these sessions, please let me know be- fore the first session on March 15th. Mike Pease and Jim Kieron have “volunteered” to carry on as Captains for the 2017 sea- son, but if anyone else fancies a go, please come forward. Finally, I wish all the League bowlers have a successful and enjoyable season.

Bradfield Dam Flask reservoir (a 5 mile walk) was the 1st venture of the new "Happy Feet" Thursday walking group. Fortunately for the 8 members who had arrived, we had to call at the Post Office shop for coffee break before we started while our lost member found us! The sprin- kling of snow made the walk pic- turesque. We finished the walk in the Plough Pub for a light lunch and liquid re- freshments. Both Ann and Ev would like to thank the members who joined us today and made our first walk such fun.
