For today’s student-athletes, training and conditioning is a year-round commitment. Balancing the rigors of competing at the collegiate level with the demands of the classroom is one of the greatest challenges our student-athletes face. That is why it is so essential that the department of intercollegiate athletics provides our student-athletes with access to hands- on academic support.

Located in the Academic Services Building, the Victory Center is an integral part of the life of our student- athletes and has a vast amount of services and assistance available.

The Victory Center is structured after the principles of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, which is created to provide student-athletes with five basic components: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Community Service, Career Development and Personal Development.

UTRGV has approximately 257 student-athletes, including approximately 150 freshmen and transfers, who are required to attend study hall and specially designed workshops that assist them in acclimating to college life and living away from home. Student-athletes must dedicate anywhere from six to 10 hours each week to study hall as they work toward their ultimate goal, graduation.

The Victory Center provides student-athletes access to computers, tutors and other resources. The Victory Center, which is open six days a week (Sunday-Friday), houses a computer lab, a learning lab, areas for both individual and group study, and offices for the Academic Advisement Center staff.

Each student-athlete works with their college advisor to make Erika Perez Krystal Cervantes Scott Smith sure that they are enrolled in the correct classes to graduate.

2014-15 Women's Basketball Invitational Participants

The University of Texas-Pan American women’s basketball team made history in 2014-15, not just by winning games and shattering records, but by changing the way the program is viewed locally, regionally, nationally and globally.

This group of Broncs took a program that hadn’t had a winning season in 32 years (a 10-5 campaign at the NAIA DII level) and had never been to a postseason tournament and bucked the trend by having the most successful season in program history, going 19-15 and earning a bid into the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI).

The Broncs broke 40 different program records and tied 19 more during the season, and their success has already led to a bright future, as the Broncs secured the No. 68 recruiting class in the nation for 2015-16, the most celebrated incoming class the program has ever had.

The Broncs put the NCAA on notice on day one of the season by beating New Mexico, a team that finished 110th in the RPI and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the WBI.

On day three of the season, the Broncs gave No. 5 Texas A&M all they could handle, leading by as many as 12 before a last second three missed in a 63-61 loss.

The Broncs came home and started rolling, sweeping a three-game home stand, including an 81-75 victory over Eastern Michigan, which finished its season 24-13 with an RPI of 85 after reaching the WNIT Sweet 16. That game took place on day nine of the season. It was the Broncs’ NCAA-leading sixth game and they were already 4-2.

The Broncs didn’t let up there, as they were the first team in the NCAA to complete 11 games, doing so during the first 23 days of the season.

After a break for finals, the Broncs returned to action at Texas Tech and kept the game close throughout before falling 50- 42. That was also the only game Broncs leading scorer Shawnte’ Goff missed all season.

When the calendar turned to 2015, the Broncs were ready for the WAC, winning their first four conference games. Overall the Broncs went 9-5, with three of their losses to the top two teams in the conference. The Broncs got some payback, though.

One of the two teams in the WAC Tournament that had beaten the Broncs was No. 2 Bakersfield, and the Broncs knocked them off in the semifinals 76-70. The Broncs trailed by as many as 12 before closing the game on a 22-4 run to earn a spot in a conference tournament championship game for the first time.

Although the Broncs didn’t win the WAC Tournament, they still got to play postseason basketball, earning a spot in the WBI and nearly knocking off eventual champion Louisiana on the road. The Broncs led for most of the first 29 minutes of the game before the Ragin’ Cajuns lived up to their nickname with a furious rally.

Despite that, the Broncs had nothing to hang their heads about as they have turned this program around and made it a force to be reckoned with. That’s why the Broncs were honored by the City of Edinburg with a proclamation. That’s why Tidwell earned Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Division I Women's Basketball Coach of the Year honors.

The Broncs made a lot of history in 2014-15. 11 2015-16 UTRGV Women's Basketball

They had the winningest season in program history with 19 victories, shattering the old record of 14, which the Broncs tied during Tidwell's first season of 2013-14. That means the Broncs also broke the record for wins in a two-year span with 33. The previous record was 27. The Broncs had the lowest RPI in program history, by far, at 188, while tying for the best strength of schedule in program history at 196.

Other program records the Broncs broke include conference wins (nine), conference tournament wins (two), home wins (12), neutral site wins (three) and conference road wins (four). Due to their success, the Broncs played more games than any previous team did, with 34 total games, compared to 31 by the next best team (2010-11).

The Broncs also broke the program records for points (2,181), rebounds (1,350), rebounds per game (39.71), steals (318), turnovers forced (701), field goals made and attempted (767-for-2,199), and free throws made and attempted (441-for-654).

Senior Brittany Bush put an exclamation point on her career, coming up with 45 blocks, the fourth most in a season in program history. She finished with 85-career blocks, the fourth-best mark in program history and the most by a student- athlete who spent no more than two seasons with the team. Bush also finished as one of the most prolific rebounders in program history, grabbing 454, the seventh most in program history and most by a student-athlete who spent no more than two seasons with the team.

Senior T’Ondria Nolen also finished strong, dishing out 131 assists, the third highest single-season total in program history. She finished her career with 188 assists, the 10th best mark in program history. Nolen led the WAC and ranked 37th in the NCAA with a 2.08 assist-to-turnover ratio this season.

Goff’s name is all over the record books as well, and she still has two seasons to go. Goff now ranks seventh in scoring (878) and three-pointers made (99), 10th in total shots made (308), 11th in free throws made (163), and fourth in career free throw shooting (.762). This happened after Goff turned her sophomore season into the fifth-highest scoring season in program history (491) by hitting the second most shots (494) and playing the fourth most minutes (1,038).

There were more records broken and tied as well, but it’s not just about this season’s records, but the ones to follow. Perhaps the most important thing the Broncs accomplished in 2014-15 was changing the culture surrounding the program by raising the bar and the expectations for every team that follows.
