Acclaimed Song Cycle Spinifex Gum Coming to Qpac 11 February 2020 ACCLAIMED SONG CYCLE SPINIFEX GUM COMING TO QPAC Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and WOW (Women of the World) Australia 2020 will present the critically acclaimed Spinifex Gum, a powerful and political musical snapshot of life in The Pilbara, for one night only in the Concert Hall on Sunday 5 April. Performed by the lush voices of Gondwana Choirs’ Cairns-based Marliya Choir, Spinifex Gum is a song cycle written and produced by The Cat Empire front man Felix Riebl, who will join the choir on stage alongside award-winning singer songwriter Emma Donovan. Riebl spent several years visiting Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi country in the Pilbara region of north Western Australia to build relationships and gather stories before going on to write the album Spinifex Gum with co-creator Ollie McGill, keyboardist and composer from The Cat Empire, in 2017. Featuring stories of racism, injustice and the legacies of colonisation, Spinifex Gum addresses pervasive issues for Australia’s First Nations population, from the historic land rights battle that was lost over Harding Dam, to 22-year-old Ms Dhu’s death in custody in 2014. The live performance, choreographed by former Bangarra Dance Theatre dancer Deborah Brown, will illuminate music built from found sound samples of The Pilbara – rustling leaves, bouncing basketballs and chugging trains – and is “full of the exuberance of youth, underwritten by basslines that would feel at home on a Beyoncé album” (The Guardian). Marliya Choir – who sing in English and Yindjibarndi – bring a vibrant young voice to the Australian issues in Spinifex Gum through their compelling blend of harmony and protest, while trailblazing a new pop-choir genre. Nominated for Best New Australian Work at the 2019 Helpmann Awards®, Spinifex Gum toured extensively last year to Sydney, Arnhem Land, Darwin, The Pilbara, Canberra and Melbourne. This will be the first time the work is performed in Brisbane and will close WOW (Women of the World) Australia 2020.     MEDIA RELEASE August 2012 Shaping Lives With Stories The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) will launch Indigenous Literacy Day at Wesley College’s Glen Waverley campus, Wednesday 5 September. Students from Years 5-9 will learn about the ILF’s work in raising literacy levels and improving the lives and opportunities of Indigenous children living in remote and isolated regions. Aunty Joy Murphy Wandin AO (known as “Aunty Joy”), a prominent Indigenous Australian, who has been actively involved in Aboriginal issues for more than 30 years, will welcome the students and talk about how stories have shaped her life. Special guests and the Foundation’s ambassadors Kaz Cooke and Felix Riebl, who have traveled out to remote communities with the Foundation, will also speak to the students about their stories and the opportunities that they have had in their careers. Kaz Cooke is a former news journalist, but is best-known as an author whose books have entertained two generations of Australian women. Felix Riebl is an Australian singer- songwriter and percussionist, who has achieved success as one of the lead vocalists from The Cat Empire. Wesley College is one of the Foundation’s key school supports and the college’s student advocacy group, Wesmob, will make a special presentation on the day. Wesmob work to raise awareness about Indigenous issues, rights and welfare. The donated money will go towards the purchase and supply of culturally appropriate books and literacy resources for over 200 remote communities around Australia. Only one in five children living in a remote Indigenous community can read or write to the accepted minimum level.

The wait was well worth while as Lord Mayor Clover Moore indicated in her speech. It is a hand- some volume – replicated as one of the most amazing cakes we have ever seen! Superbly enlarged photographs from the book adorned the Library and entrance hall of Benledi. Finding just the right illustrations was one of the reasons why publication was somewhat delayed, as well as Max’s determination to check every detail of his research. Clover commented again in the course of her talk on the strong community spirit in Glebe and how much the City appreciated the kind of feedback and responses that it receives from this particular one of its villages. The evening’s proceedings were led by the City of Sydney Historian, Dr Shirley Fitzgerald. Max’s response to the launch of his book is The Lord Mayor.     Melbourne Recital Centre presents SPINIFEX GUM AN ALL -AUSTRALIAN COLLABORATION OF VOICE, SOUND, MOVEMENT & CHANGE Musical snapshots of life in the Pilbara, performed by the lush voices of Marliya from Gondwana Choirs, Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill (The Cat Empire), plus special guest Emma Donovan. Commissioned to write a song cycle for the choir, Riebl spent several years visiting the Pilbara to build relationships and gather stories. He and Ollie McGill went on to write the album Spinifex Gum about the region’s local tales and characters, true stories of racism and injustice, and the legacies of colonisation. The music production is staunchly modern, built from found sound samples of the Pilbara – rustling leaves, bouncing basketballs and chugging trains. Riebl said of the powerful project, ‘I lived and worked with communities in the Pilbara to develop a suite of songs sung in English and Yindjibarndi, telling stories of contemporary Australia and informed by the culture and traditions of its First Nations. The result is a journey to the sun-kissed Pilbara of Australia’s north west.’ He added: ‘Spinifex Gum has been a project of a lifetime because its brought me deeper into this country – its landscape and its politics – and into music I would never have discovered had it not been for the wonderfully diverse collection of people who have made it all possible. Most of all, it’s given me the opportunity to compose for and collaborate with the young, bright, powerful women of Marliya. That’s been a true joy. To bring this show to my home city of Melbourne and perform it in the extraordinary acoustic space of Melbourne Recital Centre is going to be a real treat.

    2004 Assessment Report 2004 Music Performance Group: GA 3: Aural and Written examination GENERAL COMMENTS The format of the 2004 paper matched that of the 2001 to 2003 examination papers and comprised a total of 117 marks. There were nine questions, eight of which were to be answered, with students having the option of responding to either Question 7 (Part-writing) or Question 8 (Improvisation). The overall results for this examination were the highest in the four-year term of the current Music Performance: Group Victorian Certificate of Education Study Design. As in previous years, many students were unable to achieve equal results across the four areas of focus within Section A: Aural comprehension (that is, melody, harmony, rhythm and characteristics of a pre-recorded work), although results continue to demonstrate steady improvement in most areas. Music literacy is still an issue, although this area also improved. Basic notational skills remain the most serious weakness for a significant number of students, who demonstrated little knowledge of rudimentary skills in this area. Many students used salient terminology very vaguely, possibly because of a lack of awareness or confusion about the meaning(s) of terms. Many students continue to use pen in Section A: Aural comprehension, which is not a good idea. To effectively prepare students for the examination, teachers must be aware of the requirements of the Study Design and the structure of the examination. Some students were clearly disadvantaged in the examination because of inadequate and/or inappropriate preparation. Examination Technique Many students continued to demonstrate very poor examination technique, particularly apropos issues of time management.
