Transpac 2017 27 The story of Chubasco, or why the Transpac Race runs only in odd years by RC Keefe, edited by Dobbs Davis

In the early days of Transpac the race course ran from the start in San In those years, both the Bermuda Race and Honolulu Race were held on Francisco to the finish at Diamond Head, so it was in late June of 1938 that even years (1934, 1936, etc.). Stewart believed that some West Coast yachts the 67-foot sloop Chubasco arrived at St Francis YC for final preparations might want to race in the Bermuda Race, and some East Coast yachts might just before the July 4th start of the 2,200-mile Honolulu Race. She was want to race in the Honolulu Race. As such, Stewart carried a message east docked alongside the 55ft cutter, Blitzen, and the world-famous 53ft yawl, to the officers of the Cruising Club of America requesting they continue Dorade. Together, these three yachts created an impressive scene. Their scheduling the Bermuda Race in even years. Meanwhile out west, he arrival at StFYC is a story unto itself, as is the scheduling of that race. proposed that the Transpacific Yacht Club schedule all future Honolulu races on odd years, starting in 1939. The 1938 Honolulu Race was to be Chubasco’ s first real race. Almost new, she was designed by Sparkman & Stephens in New York and built by the To demonstrate good will, Stewart guaranteed that if all parties agreed to Wilmington Boat Works in Los Angeles for William L. Stewart, Jr. of the the new schedule, he would enter his yacht Santana in the 1938 Bermuda Los Angeles Yacht Club (father of StFYC 1967 -68 Commodore William L. Race. All parties did agree and this formula has now been in place for the Stewart Ill). best part of 80 years.

Two years prior, Capt. Stewart had the 55ft schooner Santana built In return for entering Santana in the Bermuda Race, Stewart requested specifically for the 1936 Honolulu Race. She was also designed by that the eastern yachting establishment of the day - the Cruising Club of Sparkman & Stephens and built by the Wilmington Boat Works in 1935. America and the New York Yacht Club - send a yacht west for the 1939 Santana placed second in that race, behind Dorade. Afterwards, she Honolulu Race. In no time, his good friend Henry du Pont volunteered to was returned to Los Angeles from Honolulu on the deck of a Union Oil send his 57ft Barlovento to San Francisco. This was the best of the “good Company . old boys”’ network. Mr. du Pont had been aboard Santana as navigator in the previous Honolulu Race - these gentlemen were presidents of two It may be worth noting that Stewart was the president and owner of the of the country’s principal corporations, and may have even have been Union Oil Company. And while Union Oil tankers did not at the time call in roommates several years before at M.I.T. Honolulu, it appeared they did so for the company president’s yacht.

28 Transpac 2017 Chubasco 1938 arrived and Santana went east for the Bermuda Race where she won the Schooner Cup. She traveled between Los Angeles and Bayonne, New Jersey on the deck of a Union Oil tanker. (Union Oil tankers did not ordinarily transit the Panama Canal any more than they called in Honolulu.) In the end, du Pont could not free up the time for the 1939 Honolulu Race on account of the impending war, but he did get a friend to go in his place: R.J. Reynolds of tobacco fame sent his almost-new 55ft cutter, Blitzen, west for the 1939 race.

In the days leading up to that race, both Chubasco and Blitzen were tied up at the StFYC guest floats. The 67ft yawl and the 55ft cutter were two of the finest new racing yachts in the world at the time. Dorade was there as well, and the three drew quite the crowd.

The start of the race, well inside San Francisco Bay at Treasure Island, saw light wind, fog and an adverse current. The fleet passed right in front of the StFYC on the way to the Golden Gate Bridge. Chubasco was the first under the bridge and into the open ocean with Blitzen and Dorade right behind her. It was a great Sparkman & Stephens start.

One of the great differences between the east and west coast races was that the Bermuda Race enforced a size limit of 73ft on deck. Our Honolulu Race had no maximum size limit, and in the 1939 Honolulu Race five yachts were longer than Chubasco. Three of the five were over 1OOft on deck and would not have been allowed to enter the Bermuda Race.

At the finish line in Hawaii, among the fleet of 26 boats from both coasts finished well. The New York Yacht Club visitor, Blitzen, crossed first, with Chubasco finishing second in Class B and 5th overall. After the race she returned to Los Angeles from Honolulu in early September of 1939. While there StFYC Commodore Stewart entered her in all of the major Southern California ocean and inshore races. She lived on her mooring in Watchhorn Basin in front of the Los Angeles Yacht Club, and never obtained an actual berth until after the war. When not swinging on that mooring, she could often be found on her mooring at LAYC’s outstation location on Catalina Island.

(Merland the Wiizardn ) rise again By Dobbs Davis

The name “Merlin” and Transpac are nearly synonymous with the Scroll forward 40 years, many Transpacs, thousands of sea miles and a modern era of this great race. It was this 67-foot Bill Lee design that few owners later and Merlin is back once again entered in the race. Not caught everyone’s attention when in 1977 she did exactly as she was only is she back, but she’s back with Bill Lee as owner after a yearlong designed to do in her very first race to Hawaii: be first to finish at refit. The work was performed in the boatyard in Santa Cruz harbor and Diamond Head with an elapsed time of 8 days 11 hours 1 minute 45 not his legendary “chicken shack” barn in Soquel where all those Santa seconds. This impressive time was not only good enough to win the Cruz designs were built for over a quarter century. race, but it set a course record which stood for no less than 20 years. Over the years Merlin had been modified and tweaked by various Perhaps more impressive was the effect Merlin’s feat had on offshore owners for various reasons, such as rating optimization, performance yacht design, where in that era of the IOR rule the latest racing designs improvements, and technology upgrades, so the original 1977 design is were seaworthy but also complex and heavy, excelling upwind but long gone. But the latest iteration had her equipped with a canting keel not fast off the wind. Their deep hull forms and heavy displacements and forward appendage, something of great expense and complication prevented them from breaking free to go fast reaching and downwind. that Lee was keen to see go in favor of a simpler fixed keel of modern Merlin’s narrow, shallow, lightweight design was suited for these design, so this formed the basis of this past year’s re-building efforts. offwind conditions at the expense of the other points of sail, having been specifically designed and built to excel in Transpac and the Surgery on the boat’s belly included removing the canting keel and all other offwind races common on the West Coast. The design helped the equipment associated with it: hydraulic pumps, hoses and rams, accelerate and popularize the Fast is Fun revolution that had been large hinge assemblies, and the support frames for the system, along developing in Merlin’s home in Santa Cruz and made this quiet town with the box, blade and lifting assemblies for the forward canard. “All into a boatbuilding Mecca for light, fast, seaworthy boats of all sizes and told this was 1,800 pounds of weight,” said Lee, “and a lot of space types. which was now open in the interior of the boat for re-building cabinetry to create space we could use for bunks and storage.” And while this was not Lee’s first boat in this genre, having designed and built boats like Chutzpah that raced in previous Transpacs in the The new Alan Andrews-designed T-bulb keel puts 8,700 pounds of lead 1970’s, it was Merlin’s record run that got everyone’s attention around in the bulb down 10.5 feet, which produces stability sufficient to keep the world to this new class of designs tagged with the moniker ULDB pace with their Santa Cruz 70 training partner upwind. Going deeper (Ultra Light Displacement Boats). in the keel could have yielded the same performance for less weight, but Lee said the draft limitations of Santa Cruz harbor prevent carefree navigation with a deeper keel.

Years ago Merlin had a spar upgrade from the original aluminum masthead rig common in the 1970’s to a carbon fiber fractional rig with masthead spinnakers. This supports an upwind sail area suitable to keep pace with the SC 70, but downwind 500 square feet more sail area propels Merlin significantly faster.

“The length of the two boats is about the same, as is the beam waterline, but Merlin is narrower on deck and lower freeboard,” said Lee. “The SC 70 design was done in the IOR of the early 1980’s when higher freeboards were not factored into the ratings, so this gave this design a higher rig plan just by having deck level higher off the water. Merlin was designed just to go fast with no hull bumps for IOR, and has an even more fair hull form than the slight bumps you see in the SC 70 hull. This and having more sail area and a deep generous rudder make her very fast and controllable off the wind,” he said, unlike many IOR boats of that era that did not go faster but only rocked and rolled more violently was the wind increased downwind.

Lee also said the only upgrade in the refit to the sail system was putting in- haulers on deck for closer sheeting angles for the jibs, and finding x-IACCe poles that were cut down to be used to fly the asymmetric spinnakers.

“Gybing the a-sail on the poles is so much easier than the old days of symmetric sails,” said Lee, making downwind sailing more stress-free than in yesteryears.

Except for Lee himself, known far and wide as The Wizard of Santa Cruz, most of the Merlin crew of 40 years ago has, uh, aged out of contention to be on the 8-9 man team competing this year in the race to Diamond Head. Except for one: Jack Halterman. This Santa Cruz offshore legend will make yet another race to Hawaii to add another couple thousand miles to what must be a six-figure offshore mileage resume.

Asked if he thought Halterman would be fit enough for the race, Lee laughed. “He’s doing triathlons, he’s in better shape than anyone else!” Merlin graces the cover of the 1979 program after winning the 1977 race to Honolulu. Photo: Dick of Fotoboat Company 1977
