  • 'Steely Eyes,' Chaw in Cheek, Dressing-Down Style – Zimmer Had Many Faces
‘Steely eyes,’ chaw in cheek, dressing-down style – Zimmer had many faces By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Friday, June 6th, 2014 Everybody knew the multiple sides – and resulting expressive faces – of Don Zimmer when they shoehorned themselves into his Wrigley Field manager’s office the late afternoon of Friday, Sept. 8, 1989. All had seen and enjoyed the cheru- bic, cheeky chaw-cradling “Popeye” image of Zimmer has he held court, telling stories of his already- astounding 38-year journey through baseball. He had taken the Cubs a long way already, to first place with three weeks to go in this shocking season, and had won friends and influenced people. Yet the media masses also had wit- nessed the darker side of Zimmer. There was the quick temper and jump-down-the-throat style of an old-school baseball lifer with few personal refinements. Above all, the eyes had it, transforming the cherub Don Zimmer (left) confers with Andre Dawson at spring into something seemingly a lot more training before the memorable 1989 season. Photo cred- sinister. it Boz Bros. “He had those steely eyes,” said then Cubs outfielder Gary Varsho. “When he was mad, his eyes opened wide and they penetrated through you. One day I got picked off after www.ChicagoBaseballMuseum.org [email protected] leading off ninth with a single. Oh, my God, coming back to the dugout facing those steely blue eyes.” On this day, the assembled media waited for the bulging eye sockets, the reddened face and the possible verbal outburst. Zimmer and buddy Jim Frey, doubling as Cubs general manager, appeared as if they lost their best friend.

  • 'Wild Thing' Legend – but Williams Loaded the Bases with Hits In
They print ‘Wild Thing’ legend – but Williams loaded the bases with hits in ’89 Cubs opener By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Friday, January 31st, 2013 In an explanatory scene from John Ford’s “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” a pundit explained why James Stewart’s acclaimed title feat, which he didn’t do, was firmly en- trenched in history. Paraphrasing, the fellow said when faced with writing about facts or the legend, “print the legend.” And so it was also with Mitch Williams in his Cubs debut on Opening Day, Tuesday, April 4, Succeeding his former status as a dramatic ninth-inning pitch- er, Mitch Williams now can hold an audience with his baseball 1989 at Wrigley Field. storytelling. The grand entrance for lefty Williams “Wild Thing” act as closer by now features him walking the bases loaded, then striking out the side, in the ninth inning of the Cubs’ 5-4 victory over the Phillies. The walk on the wild side, then the trio of whiffs, simply comes off as more stylish and dra- matic. But through the decades, baseball events not only get embellished, they also somehow merge with other dramatic happenings. In this instance, Williams and Sam Jones’ ninth -inning escape acts, both against Pennsylvania teams, tend to blend together in the minds of too many Cubs’ fans. www.ChicagoBaseballMuseum.org [email protected] On May 12, 1955, also at Wrigley Field, curveball specialist Jones did walk three Pirates in a row starting off the ninth while he had a no-hitter going. Jones, first African- American pitcher in Cubs history, passed Gene Freese, Preston Ward and Tom Saffel to load ‘em up for Dick Groat.

Transcribed Pages from the Charles Dickson Papers Box 3 Folder 5: Mobile Baseball 1951-1962 356. Mobile Register April 4 – 1951 Boston Braves vs. Brooklyn Dodgers In the only major league exhibition game carded at Mobile this season, the two National League clubs waged a three-hour-and-five-minute marathon that saw 18 hits, 18 runs, three errors, and 20 free tickets to first by a battery of nine pitchers. The final result of the game was a score of 10 to 8 in favor of “Lippy” Leo Durocher’s Brooklyn Dodgers against Billy Southworth’s Boston Braves. The Mobile fans had the pleasure of seeing Eddie Stanky in action on second base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. (TRANSCRIBER’S NOTE: SEVERAL INDEPENDENT SOURCES CONFIRMED THAT DUROCHER WAS NOT THE MANAGER OF THE DODGERS IN 1951; THE DODGERS WERE MANAGED BY CHUCK DRESSEN. DUROCHER WAS THEN MANAGER OF THE NEW YORK GIANTS) Clyde King King’s contract purchased from Montreal could help the Brooklyn Dodgers considerably. Clyde King is not exactly a newcomer to the Dodgers. He appeared on the team as a left- handed pitcher in 1944, 1945, and 1949, but lacked the required speed. He’s smart, though, and has control. King formerly played with the Mobile Bears. April 5 – 1951 John Hall Hall will be back with the Mobile Bears during the 1951 season after three seasons. Few fans realize that in the fall of 1947, Branch Rickey could have sold Hall for exactly $100,000. That was the offering price of the young rookie who came out of nowhere to set the Southern Assn.

Valentine agreed to terms on a two-year contract with club options for 2014 and 2015. No further terms were disclosed. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington. “We are thrilled to welcome Bobby as the manager of the Red Sox, and I’m eager to begin working closely with him in our preparations for the 2012 season,” said Cherington. “He is one of the brightest baseball minds I have encountered, with a wealth of experience in the game, an unmatched passion for winning and a proven track record of success in demanding environments. In Bobby, we have the right man to lead the Red Sox.” A veteran of more than 40 years in professional baseball, Valentine has previously served parts of 15 seasons as a Major League manager with the Texas Rangers (1985-92) and New York Mets (1996-2002), compiling a 1,117-1,072 (.510) record. He ranks fourth among active managers in games and fifth in wins. The Stamford, CT native becomes the sixth Red Sox manager born in New England and the second from Connecticut, joining Meriden’s Jack Barry, who managed the club in 1917.
