World of Nations Celebrates 20 Years

It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed since Warren Jones, as President of the Jacksonville City Council and Chairman of the Duval County Tourist Development Council (TDC), introduced an exciting idea for Jacksonville citizens to celebrate their ancestral heritage in a lively festival setting. I served on the TDC at the time of the festival’s inception and am proud of its growth and longevity. Through the years, the event, has served to educate and entertain thou- sands of visitors who attend. Festival goers experience authentic customs, food, music, clothes, dance and more from the popular African Village, which features the countries of Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa. Other places featured are Latin America, Asia, Europe, South America, North America, and the Caribbean. The 20th World of Nations Celebration takes place May 3-5, 2012 at Metropolitan Park. Jordenn Thompson A Charismatic Mountain Of Sweet Child Charm!

By Rych McCain, [email protected] and Facebook Photos Courtesy of RMMS

She has sweetness and charm in such abundance that it is difficult not to melt in her presence. Eight year-old Jordenn Thompson also has the gift of acting talent to combine with the charm that is bound to take her far in the realms of TV and Films. She has a major role in the new Tyler Perry film “Good Deeds” playing Ariel, the daughter of Lindsey played by Thandie Newton. Being in a major motion picture is a big step for an eight year-old, especially when one considers the mature mindset and discipline that it takes to act on that level. How did Thompson arrive at that point so young and what motivated her to get into professional acting? She Jordenn Thompson smiles and says, “I started acting when I was four. I don’t actually remember when I got started. I think I just kept watching movies and I told my mom that I wanted to be in a movie. So I started acting.”

Of course the training came and she began booking child modeling gigs for Gap, Old Navy, Children’s Place, JC Penny, Walmart and Target to name some. This was followed by commercials with McDonald’s, Sears, Humana, The Disney Channel and others. TV roles eventualized such as “Fake It Til You Make It,” which lead to films. In the movie “Good Deeds,” Ariel and her mom become homeless and have a very emotional rollercoaster ride with scenes that called for a wide range of reactions. How difficult was it to cry among other emotions? Thompson snaps that one up without losing a beat. “That was hard because when I went in for the auditions, I was so excited that I couldn’t cry that much at all. But I didn’t actually cry, I just put my head down and was pretending to cry so it was funny. I was trying not to laugh too.” The movie on screen takes place in San Francisco where all of the exterior shots were filmed but the actual shoot of the project happened in . So what was Thompson’s experience working with Mr. Perry?

She lights up, “He was so cool. He always treated me like a princess. He was so nice to me. He gave me flowers everyday so it was cool.” What was her initial reaction seeing him in person for the first time? Thompson reflects, “He’s the biggest star I’ve seen before in a movie.” Thandie Newton and Thompson looked very realistically close as mother and daughter. How much was she like a real mom to Thompson? She flashes that charm- ing smile and says, “She always took care of me and she was the sweetest girl that I’ve every met before so it was fun working with her. She helps me out a lot. She makes me be Ariel. She does the part really good and it helps me do the part really good.” In dealing with the subject of homelessness, what does Thompson hope the movie goers will take from this film? She says, “They would go home thinking, what if I got homeless? And say if I ended like that, I’d be really happy.” Of course she is referring to good fate she and her mom has at the end of the film. Rihanna’s Former Caribbean Female Heads Of State Give International Women’s Pastor Concerned Day Speeches During CARICOM Meeting By ARTHIA NIXON With Her Image and Caribbean News Editor Lifestyle Choices

SURINAME: Considering that blacks were only given the right to vote in the last century and women the right to vote seemingly only a few decades, the females in the Caribbean celebrated International Women’s Day with pride lis- tening to remarks of Portia Simpson-Miller, Prime Minister of Jamaica (right) and Kamla Persad Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago (left). Both women made history at the 23rd Intersessional CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting in Suriname as they were the first two female Heads of State to be represented at the caucus. “Our women today not only dominate many areas of national, social and professional endeavours but they do so with merit, competence and distinction,” said Simpson-Miller during her address to the women of Jamaica. While we can take some pride in the overall progress made we must also be very mindful of the fact that a signifi- cant number of Jamaican women still struggle against the barriers which keep them poor and marginalized. Many of these women live in rural communities across the length and breadth of this country. It is within this context that we join the glob- al community in supporting the United Nations theme for this year's observance - Empower Rural Women: End Hunger and Poverty. The sad reality is that more and more women, the majority in rural communities are becoming poorer which is impacting on their life chances and that of their families.” She added: ““We have come a long way, but the job is not yet complete until we overcome all remaining challenges to the economic and political progress of our women. I encourage the men in our society to join hands in celebrating the Jamaican woman.” Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister, who was bought up in a rural area, was thrilled to take part in the event. “This is another “first” for Caribbean women’s Political Participation and I hope to be joined by more women lead- ers not only at the regional and hemispheric levels but internationally as well,” said Persad Bissessar. “Together with the Most Honourable Portia Simpson, Prime Minister of Jamaica I shall be representing the interest of our nation and region at this By ARTHIA NIXON Caribbean News Editor High-Level meeting.” She noted that Trinidad and Tobago’s track record has been commendable citing that in 2011 the sister nation was BARBADOS: Rihanna may be an inter- identified in the Commonwealth as the third best place to be born a girl. national pop star but to many Bajans she is “Coming from a rural district I appreciate first-hand the essential role played by rural women in this country,” she still remembered as the island girl they said. “They are an integral part of the economy and play crucial roles ensuring food and nutrition security. Bishop Vibert Lowe, pastor of the church Rihanna attended in Barbados before her worldwide fame recently told media that he is “praying” for her, even on her choice of recon- necting with former boyfriend Chris Brown. The pastor, who is still a friend of the Fenty family, says that even though Rihanna visits her home island as is evidence through her provacative display during a local cultural parade and multiple paparazzi photos, he doesn’t get to see her anymore because she is too busy. The Bishop said:“I don't see her much when she comes back -- she seems too busy -- but she should spend more time in church." "A lot of people have been praying for her and hoping that she will drop these bad habits,” he stated. “We feel it's wrong for her to behave like this. As a young lady, she's not setting a good example." "Young people look to her as a mentor, they regard her as an idol and copy her lifestyle,” he added. “There are people on the island who think she parties way too hard." "After all he [Chris Brown] did, I'd tell her to steer clear of him,” Bishop Lowe said. “He's not the correct influence on her life." Bahamian Scientists Participate In Coral Reef Exploration BAHAMAS:About 500 persons recently screened a documentary in the Atlantis Conference Center where a team of local and Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation scientific divers observed Bahamian coral reefs suffering from coral bleaching as a result of climate change pollution and overfishing. During the screening, the seven Bahamas National Trust (BNT) researchers recalled what they observed and learned during their diving experiences, in the Living Oceans Foundation’s short film called “Mission Bahamas”, filmed on the M/Y Golden Shadow. The M/Y Golden Shadow is a 67-meter (220 ft) logistical support vessel that carries a Cessna Caravan Amphibious aircraft. The M/Y Shadow is owned by the Living Oceans Foundation, which is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of living oceans and pledges to champion their preservation through research, education and a commitment to Science Without Borders®. One of the Golden Shadow’s most important assets is its stern elevator platform. This system is used to launch and recover the seaplane, as well as the various ten- ders. The platform is also invaluable for diving access and recovery in difficult sea conditions. To ensure the safety of visiting divers, the Golden Shadow also has a recompression chamber capable of accom- modating one casualty and one medic. Minister of the Environment the Hon Earl Deveaux recently thanked HRH Prince Khaled of Saudi Arabia for the gift of scientific research that will strengthen the Bahamian economy by allowing the scientists to gather information that will be valuable to increasing the stewardship and protection of the country’s marine environ- ment. The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) will use the research information to create Marine Protected Areas, geared towards protecting coral reef systems dying from stress. Minister Deveaux told the Prince, “On behalf of the entire Bahamas, I thank you. I would like to close with a quote from Krista Sherman, a member of the Bahamas National Trust (BNT). “In Krista’s words, ‘It was an amazing and extremely beneficial experience. Mrs. Dennis had been branch president from 1984 until 1994, spending much of that time pursuing a years-old court case to complete desegregation of Duval County schools. The school system negotiated an agreement in 1990 that led to the creation of the county's magnet school system, although the NAACP remained involved in legal challenges after Mrs. Dennis left the group's top post. First Lady Michelle Obama To Lead Presidential Delegation to Opening Ceremonies of 2012 Summer Olympic Games in

The White House released an ooffical statment last week that First Lady Michelle Obama will lead the Presidential Delegation to the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. Mrs. Obama made the announce- ment at an event with Mrs. Samantha Cameron celebrating the Olympic Games and Mrs. Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative. At the event, Olympians and Paralympians including Kortney Clemons, Dominique Dawes, Tom Dolan, April Holmes, Lisa Leslie, Lori Ann Lindsey, Dan O’Brien, Becky Sauerbrunn, David Wagner and Mal Washington led DC-area school chil- dren in activities inspired by the Olympic Games. Mrs. Obama emphasized her hope that the Olympic Games will inspire more young people to get active and healthy, the goal of her Let’s Move! initiative. “In the months ahead, I’ll be talking to Americans all across the country to encourage even more young people to tap into that Olympic spirit and turn their inspiration into action,” said Mrs. Obama. “As the Olympic creed states, ‘the most important thing … is not to win, but to take part.’ And that doesn’t just mean sitting and watching, it means getting up and getting active as well. I hope we use the upcoming games as motivation for all of us to get up and get moving. This is espe- cially true for our young people. You don’t have to be a gold medal winner or the best athlete at your school to take part. You don’t even have to play an organized sport. You can dance in the living room, ride your bike around the neighborhood, or go for a walk with your friends. Everyone can find some way to be healthy, get active, and have some fun.” “Olympians are ambassadors of their country so it is only fitting that our nation’s leaders show support for the Games. Mrs. Obama’s support will only further invigorate the athletes’ desire to bring home the gold and motivate all Americans to be active,” said Dominique Dawes, three-time Olympic gymnast and co-chair of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, who emceed today’s event. “Today my work on behalf of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition is a way for me to give back to the country that supported me during my Olympic journey.” It is traditional for a delegation to travel to the Olympic Games to represent the United States. In the coming months, the White House will announce the official delegates accompanying Mrs. Obama to London. Other First Ladies that have led a Presidential Delegation to the Olympic Games include First Lady Laura Bush to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy and then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton to the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

I was trying not to laugh too.” The movie on screen takes place in San Francisco where all of the exterior shots were filmed but the actual shoot of the project happened in Atlanta.
