Formby High School

Determined to Achieve Curriculum and Achievement

‘Students work with pace, purpose and independence on a range of challenging activities.’ (Ofsted)

Formby High School has an impressive record of success at GCSE, A Level and BTEC. The majority of students who join Sixth Form attain A Level and BTEC results that enable them to progress to study at some of the country’s most prestigious universities, including Cambridge, University College London, Imperial College London, Manchester, Sheffield and . In recent years, several of our former students have studied at Oxbridge, all of whom benefitted from clear guidance, encouragement and challenging academic tutoring during their time in Sixth Form. In 2015 54% of A Levels were graded A* to B. BTEC achievement is similarly excellent, with 76% of those students taking BTEC subjects gaining Distinction* or ‘An outstanding curriculum Distinction. Not all students choose to progress to university that caters well for the needs and some follow very different pathways, including Art of all students.’ (Ofsted) Foundation, Apprenticeship and employment – whatever their chosen pathway, all students receive a clear and structured programme of careers advice and guidance. Qualification (EPQ) by undertaking a piece of independent Some students may choose to complete the Extended Project research in a field of their choosing and submitting a final written report. The EPQ is an excellent complement to A Level study; it helps students to develop greater independence and is recognised as a credible qualification by the nation’s leading universities. Through EPQ, students will improve their research and presentation skills and develop greater confidence to go on to undergraduate study.

Formby High School is fully inclusive, offering a curriculum that meets the needs of each individual and enabling every student to succeed. Students may pursue either an A Level or BTEC pathway or follow a combination of both.

Formby High School ‘Students reach exceptionally high standards and make Sixth Form outstanding progress.’ (Ofsted) Pastoral Care and Student Welfare

The school places particular importance on pastoral care and personal development. Each Sixth Form student has a Personal Tutor throughout the two years of study and truly benefits from this consistency in terms of care, expertise and guidance. Further support is provided by Academic Tutors, including members of the School’s Leadership Team, who meet with small groups of students from both year groups on a fortnightly basis throughout the year in order to discuss progress in subject areas. The Sixth Form Pastoral team comprises the Director of Sixth Form and Year 12 and Year 13 Progress Leaders. Our aim is to ensure that students remain on track and succeed in all aspects of their development in Sixth Form.

Formby High School does not accept second best in terms of standards of behaviour and every student is expected to work hard, respect himself or herself and respect others. The calm and responsible manner in which our Sixth Form students behave sets a good example to younger students and helps promote a positive learning environment for all. ‘The excellent and sensitive care and support that Sixth Form students receive maintains many in full-time education who would not otherwise engage in further study.’ (Ofsted) Extra-Curricular Programme and School Trips

The Tomorrow’s Teachers programme is on offer to Year 12 students considering a career in teaching, giving students a hands-on and realistic insight into various areas that make up a teacher’s daily responsibilities. The commitment of our students to the extra-curricular programme and the high standards they display demonstrate that the school’s mission ‘Determined to Achieve’ resonates way beyond their academic work.

‘The rich variety of extra-curricular activities is a strength, including sports and many opportunities to participate in very high quality musical, drama and dance performances.’ (Ofsted) Ethos and Values Eve, Year 13

Students in Sixth Form have the opportunity to follow one of four pathways. These are outlined in the table below. Typically, students will follow a three course pathway (A Level, BTEC or a combination of both). Those who have very high attainment at GCSE and who demonstrate their academic potential and capacity to cope with a more academically demanding curriculum will be able to select four A Level courses and will study all four subjects during Years 12 and 13.

Pathway Minimum Entry Requirements

At least six A*/A grades at GCSE with at least a B grade in A Level Pathway (Four Courses) both English (Language or Literature) and Mathematics

At least five A* - C grades at GCSE with at least a C grade in A Level Pathway (Three Courses) both English (Language or Literature) and Mathematics

At least five A* - C grades at GCSE with at least a C grade in A Level and BTEC Pathway (Three Courses) both English (Language or Literature)and Mathematics

BTEC Pathway (Three Courses) At least five A* - C grades at GCSE

In addition to meeting the minimum entry requirements for the chosen pathway, students must fulfil the entry requirements for each subject they intend to study.

A wide range of A Level and BTEC courses are offered to students, all taught by experienced subject specialists. All courses will last two years in duration. A Levels are undergoing considerable change nationally and new courses are being implemented over a three year period between 2015 and 2017. For this reason, in some A Level courses students will continue to sit AS Level examinations at the end of Year 12 that will contribute towards the final A Level grade. Those subjects have been marked with a † in the list below. For the remaining A Level courses, all examinations will be taken at the end of Year 13.

** The Dance course (A Level or BTEC) that is offered in September 2016 will be determined on the basis of the profile and interests of the students who wish to study Dance. A Level or BTEC will be offered, not both. All courses will require a minimum of five students to ensure they are viable.

GCSE English and Mathematics

Any student who joins Sixth Form without having previously attained a C grade in GCSE English and / or Mathematics will retake the GCSE during Year 12. They will receive additional teaching and resit the examination(s) when their teachers feel they are ready to do so.

Extended Project Qualification / Project Based Learning Some students will have the opportunity to complete the Extended Project Qualification. It provides an opportunity for students to extend their abilities beyond A Level specifications and prepare for university or their future career. It can also be used it to earn extra UCAS points. It allows students to embark on largely self-directed projects.

By taking responsibility for the choice and design of an individual project, students become more reflective and independent learners, develop decision-making and problem-solving skills and improve their research, analysis and presentation skills. Projects carried out last year included research on UK gang culture, financial awareness and ethics in warfare. In addition to the Extended Project Qualification, some students choose to engage in other project-based learning activities, including the Nuffield Research Project.

Academic Tutoring

Every Sixth Form student is assigned an Academic Tutor, typically a member of the Senior Leadership Team or Sixth Form Leadership Team, with whom they meet on a fortnightly basis alongside a small group of fellow students. The objective of this initiative is to provide personal support and guidance to each student on a wide range of issues, including developing study skills, supporting academic progress and preparing for life after Sixth Form. Students develop a close working relationship with their Academic Tutor and fellow tutees and the sessions are invaluable at supporting students to refine the tools and techniques required to enhance their learning. Independent Study All students are expected to make good use of time outside lessons for independent study. Facilities, which include two multi- media study areas (equipped with over 50 PCs) and Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the Sixth Form Centre, promote an independent learning environment. Free Time Students in Sixth Form are given a greater degree of independence. They are able to make use of the Common Room and we recently opened a coffee bar for students that sells hot drinks, light meals and snacks from before school until early afternoon each day. In addition, students in Sixth Form have access to the school’s fitness suite during enrichment lessons and at other times during the school day. Preparation for Higher Education and other Post-18 Pathways The school places a great deal of emphasis on preparing students for life after school. The university and employment landscapes are fast changing and priority is given to providing students with appropriate advice to empower them to make the right choices. This includes guidance through the UCAS university application process and relevant support for those students who choose to follow alternative pathways, including employment, Apprenticeship or Art Foundation. The school places particular importance on ensuring our students are prepared for professional life after Sixth Form. An ongoing programme of careers advice and guidance is offered to students and includes initiatives such as Careers Experience week, where students are encouraged to establish links with employers and arrange placements to enable them to gain valuable vocational experience and insight. Particularly popular with students are our ‘Meet the Professionals’ workshops, where they are given the opportunity to ask questions and advice directly from experts from a wide variety of professions. Aspiring Applicants Programme The school has high aspirations for every student and will provide a programme of study, enrichment opportunities and careers information and guidance to each individual that will prepare him / her well for life beyond Sixth Form. Each year, many Formby High School students successfully take up places at the country’s most prestigious universities. Every student is well supported through the university application process and those who are applying for the most sought after courses may require some extra guidance and intervention. With this in mind, we have established the Aspiring Applicants Programme for those students who have very high attainment at GCSE and aspire to Oxbridge and the Russell Group universities. The programme will also be highly beneficial to those students who intend to submit an application to study courses in Medicine, Dentistry and Law. Through the programme, which you will follow throughout Years 12 and 13, you will be given specific support and guidance through the UCAS application process. You will also be given opportunities during your time in Sixth Form that will enhance your university application and readiness to study at one of the UK’s elite universities, giving you the best opportunity to secure a place at the university of your choice. Further information about the Aspiring Applicants Programme can be found in the Sixth Form section of the school website.

Preparing for Life in Sixth Form Formby High School Sixth Form

The choices that students make after their GCSE studies shape the future and their most important decisions concern which courses to study. At Formby High School we are committed to providing effective careers education, information, advice and guidance to each individual, ensuring all students are on the appropriate pathway that will allow them to fulfil their career aspirations. All these initiatives are available to all students, whether they are in Formby High School Year 11 or joining us from other schools. Throughout Year 11, staff are on hand to help students conduct the necessary research and offer advice on making the right choices. For example, members of the school’s Senior Leadership Team are involved in interviewing all students, providing a valuable opportunity to discuss post-16 choices and pathways. Students are encouraged to think carefully about the future, and the important decisions they will take, from the moment they consider enrolling in Sixth Form to the point that they leave school at the age of 18.

Important Websites

Students should be mindful of their plans for life after Sixth Form when considering subject options choices. For many university degree courses and higher apprenticeship schemes, the subjects studied during Years 12 and 13 are extremely important. For this reason, we strongly encourage students to use the following websites to gather important information when selecting their post-16 courses: • www.ucas.com • www.russellgroup.ac.uk/informed-choices • www.nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk

Post-16 Pathways Interviews

Every student in Year 11 and external applicants will have the opportunity to discuss their post-16 choices with a member of the Senior Leadership Team or Sixth Form team. These interviews will take place during the Spring Term.

Assemblies

Assemblies will be delivered to Year 11 students at regular intervals during the Spring term, focusing on different curriculum areas and the courses offered. These assemblies, which will delivered by our Curriculum Leaders, will give insight into the nature of the different A Level and BTEC courses offered, building on the information about each subject contained within the prospectus.

Welcome Day

A Welcome Day for all of our prospective Year 12 students takes place once GCSE examinations are complete in the Summer term. Hosted in the Sixth Form Centre and facilitated by the Sixth Form team, this day will enable students to begin to develop a sense of belonging to our Sixth Form and for external students to get to know the key staff who will be responsible for their welfare and academic progress.

Students are encouraged to finalise their plans during the summer holiday and in advance of GCSE results day – being well informed is essential and forward planning is key. Staff are available throughout GCSE results day and the following week to assist students in confirming their Sixth Form courses. We are confident, though, that the guidance, care and support that provided in the months leading to GCSE results day will have best prepared students for making the right choices. Communication with Parents Formby High School Sixth Form

We believe that students are more likely to make progress if parents and teachers are all seen to be working together in the best interests of the student. There are many opportunities throughout the school year for parents and the school to be in contact with each other: • Parents’ Evenings – when all subject teachers are available for consultation. These are held for each year group and normally take place from 4:30pm to 7:30pm on either a Tuesday or Thursday. • Year 12 Sixth Form Matters Evening – to assist students in settling in to Sixth Form and provide important information to parents which will enable them to support their daughter/son through A Level and BTEC study. • Year 12 Post Sixth Form Pathways Evening – to inform students and parents about the choices students have in life beyond Sixth Form. • Year 13 Raising Achievement Evening – to provide important information to students and parents about the key milestones during Year 13 and to provide specific guidance about the university application process and what school will do to support all students in fulfilling their potential. • Screening and Progress Reports – these are issued termly to inform parents about the progress students are making towards their target A Level or BTEC grades. • Full Reports – full written reports are sent home to all parents once a year. • Website – useful school information, regular updates and copies of correspondence can be found on our school website www.formbyhighschool.com. • Email – parents are welcome to communicate by email to [email protected]. • Text – we ask parents to sign-up to ParentMail® in order to enable the school to send a text message if your daughter/ son is absent without notification. In addition to the above, parents and students are encouraged to follow the school’s Twitter feed @FormbyHigh and read FOCUSON…., our fortnightly newsletter that is sent home by ParentMail®. Parents are welcome in school at any time if they wish to discuss a matter that is causing concern; however, in the interests of maximising teaching and learning time for your daughter/ son, we do request that parents call to make an appointment in advance. We may ask parents to come in if we wish to discuss a student’s progress or behaviour.

ParentMail™ The school uses ParentMail® to communicate with parents by email and text message in order to limit the costs and environmental impact associated with sending paper copies of correspondence home. The text service is also used as part of our attendance monitoring and parents will receive a text message if their daughter/son is absent without prior notification. We strongly encourage all parents to sign up to this service in order to improve the reliability and speed of communication from the school. Please be assured that assured that ParentMail® is registered with the Data Protection Registrar and guarantees that all information you provide will be kept private and will not be passed on to any other organisation.
