    Did you hear the one about…:Exclusionary Humour and Micropolitics Andreas Krebs Department of Political Science, University of Ottawa DRAFT – please do not cite or circulate without author’s permission Abstract Humour plays a central role in our daily lives, yet is rarely the object of research within political science. There has been a recent upsurge in humour that deals with controversial issues, such as race, gender, and sexual preference, mostly using irony in its approach. Comics such as Sarah Silverman, Dave Chappelle and Russell Peters participate in this resurgence. Much of the literature on the political ramifications of the use of ‘exclusionary humour’ – humour which has a racial, gendered, or other group as its target – claims that its use is by definition negative and against the political goals of equality for the groups targeted. According to these arguments, the use of such humour constitutes a micropolitical threat to state policies that work towards incorporation of minorities into the fabric of society, such as multiculturalism. However, I contend that certain forms of exclusionary humour have a far more ambivalent role in politics, and may work to subtly undermine inequality through making light of racism, sexism, and homophobia. This paper is an analysis of a series of interviews exploring how the dominant group of White, Anglophone males in Canada view and mobilize exclusionary humour in their daily lives. Focusing exclusively on members of the Charter Generation, i.e. those who have grown up with multiculturalism as official policy, the paper will evaluate the use of exclusionary humour for political goals of equality, and attempt to determine the effect that multicultural socialization has had on the way exclusionary humour manifests itself.

    TOPIA 22 Sean Brayton Race Comedy and the “Misembodied” Voice ABSTRACT This essay unpacks the ways in which our “knowledge” of race and ethnicity is tied to ocularcentrism. It explores the political possibilities of ethnolinguistic imitation or “style-shifting” as part of an antiracist pedagogy embedded within popular culture. If identity is performed across different contexts, we may find an interesting dialogue of race and ethnicity within stand-up comedy, a realm of popular culture sometimes dismissed as “light entertainment.” The comedy of Russell Peters and Margaret Cho offer a site of imitation and ambivalence enabled by delinquent ethnic voices that play with the boundaries between self and Other. RÉSUMÉ Cet article dévoile les manières par lesquelles notre « connaissance » de la race et de l’ethnicité relève du visio-centrisme. Il explore les possibilités politiques de l’imitation ethnolinguistique ou « alternance de style linguistique » en tant que partie intégrante d’une pédagogie antiraciste inscrite dans la culture populaire. Filewod Although the majority of today’s performances are accessible on multiple platforms, performance analysis often continues to focus on the live event or to discuss the recorded event as if it were live. This thesis explores the influence of various mediatizations on a performance form. In order to better understand changes in power, control, and authority that are produced on differing mediums, it develops a form of analysis that views the performance event as comprised of two aspects. It argues that a performance event is comprised of the performance proper, which is a performance that is identifiable as being for entertainment purposes, and the para- performance, which arises due to the intention and/or execution of the performance proper. For example, the performance text of a theatrical work is the performance proper whereas the audience’s reactions, the architecture of the performance space, and the promotional materials and reviews are part of the para-performance. A para- performance analysis thus reads both the performance proper and the para- performance “as” performance. This thesis is an investigation of the process of adapting live performance to media platforms.

It explores the political possibilities of ethnolinguistic imitation or “style-shifting” as part of an antiracist pedagogy embedded within popular culture. If identity is performed across different contexts, we may find an interesting dialogue of race and ethnicity within stand-up comedy, a realm of popular culture sometimes dismissed as “light entertainment.” The comedy of Russell Peters and Margaret Cho offer a site of imitation and ambivalence enabled by delinquent ethnic voices that play with the boundaries between self and Other. RÉSUMÉ Cet article dévoile les manières par lesquelles notre « connaissance » de la race et de l’ethnicité relève du visio-centrisme. Il explore les possibilités politiques de l’imitation ethnolinguistique ou « alternance de style linguistique » en tant que partie intégrante d’une pédagogie antiraciste inscrite dans la culture populaire. Si l’identité se performe dans différents contextes, il nous est possible de découvrir un intéressant dialogue sur la race et l’ethnicité dans la comédie stand-up (ou monologue comique), domaine de la culture populaire parfois qualifié avec dédain de « spectacle léger ».
