January 2009 Highlights www.comedychannel.com.au JANUARY 2009 HIGHLIGHTS 1. Graham Kennedy’s Blankety Blanks (Part of AUSSIE GOLD) 2. New Year’s Day Animania 3. Australia Day South Park Marathon GRAHAM KENNEDY’S BLANKETY BLANKS Part of AUSSIE GOLD CHANNEL PREMIERE Fridays at 7.30pm from January 2 The King of Australian comedy Graham Kennedy is joining AUSSIE GOLD, THE COMEDY CHANNEL’s television BBQ of the greatest and timeless Australian comedy favourites! Graham Kennedy is at the height of his irreverent hilarity, whilst pushing the boundaries of acceptable taste with an armada of jokes about Cyril and Dick, in this legendary television hit. Despite, or perhaps in part thanks to, being labelled “vulgar smut” by the press, BLANKETY BLANKS quickly became the highest rating show on Australian television. In the late ‘70s there was simply no other place for Australian viewers to be as Kennedy turned the game show format into a 30 minute tour de force of double entendres and outrageous comic brilliance. A game show, in theory, but one that places the contestants in distant third place behind the hilarious antics of Gra-Gra and his regular cast members Ugly Dave Gray, Stuart Wagstaff, Noelene Brown, Carol Raye, Barry Creyton and Noel Ferrier. In addition to being presided over by legendary producer Tony the Moustache Twirler and with anonymous contributions from the enigmatic Peter the Phantom Puller, BLANKETY BLANKS rotates through a roster celebrity guest stars forming a who’s who of Australian ‘70s entertainment - Abigail, Delvene Delaney, June Salter, Peta Toppano, Mark Holden, Tommy Hanlon Jr, John Paul Young, Debbie Byrne, Marty Rhone and anyone else who was up for the ribald fun. 1 NEW YEARS DAY ANIMANIA Thursday January 1 - 6am to 12 Midnight Hold on tight Animaniacs for a full speed New Year’s Day Animania! Our day of off-beat cartooning starts with the SOUTH PARK SERIES 10 MARATHON at 6am with all the episodes back-to-back. Also featured in this animation explosion are the demented pop culture of the Emmy Award winning Robot Chicken, hosted by creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, winged-avenger turned two-bit lawyer, HARVEY BIRMAN, ATTORNEY AT LAW, the world’s most surreal share house in DRAWN TOGETHER and HEADCASES, the only show celebrities are desperate not to appear on. Rounding out the day is another chance to catch the SOUTH PARK SERIES 10 MARATHON from 6pm. Get your year off to a great start with NEW YEAR’S ANIMANIA on THE COMEDY CHANNEL. AUSTRALIA DAY - SOUTH PARK SERIES 11 MARATHON Monday January 26 – 5.30am to 12.30pm, repeating from 12.30pm – 6.30pm After 10 seasons of sick, wrong, brilliant, subversive, and groundbreaking humour, South Park just keeps getting a little more sick, a little more wrong, and a lot more funny! In our special Series 11 marathon Cartman sets a new town record for the most number of homeless people jumped over on his skateboard and fakes having Tourette's syndrome in order to get away with saying whatever he wants at school. Stan gets pulled into a bizarre Da Vinci Code-like conspiracy surrounding Easter, Butters is sent to a camp to "pray the gay away" when his dad suspects he's sexually curious and South Park gears up for a visit from Hillary Clinton. Also featured is the trilogy Imaginationland, where the boys have the entire contents of the world's imaginations, religions, and superstitions laid before them; for better or worse. So call your Accountabilabuddy and spend the Australia Day holiday with the potty- mouthed residents of SOUTH PARK. RICK & STEVE (SERIES 1) Part of ANIMANIA AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE SERIES Wednesdays at 9.30pm from January 7 Welcome to “the gayest of gay ghettoes”, West Lahunga Beach, where Rick (voiced by Will Matthews) and Steve (Queer As Folk’s Peter Paige) make their fabulously decorated double-income-no-children home. That is until Rick’s lifelong lesbian friend Kirsten (Emily Brooke Hands) asks him to be the father of her child. There’s just one catch, Kirsten’s wife Dana (Taylor M. Dooley) and Rick’s husband Steve are mortal enemies. The insults fly, nothing goes unspoken, but the ugly, bitter truth about domestic bliss never looked so cute. Also included in the cast are comedian Margaret Cho and Alan Cumming, Wilson Cruz (My So-Called Life), Lori Allen (Family Guy) and Lorna Luft (Judy Garland’s daughter!). Loaded with snappy comebacks, outrageous one-liners and absurd situations this stop- motion animated sitcom became an instant hit on the American Logo network. RICK & STEVE is propelled by a defiant disregard for political correctness and a low-budget aesthetic that combines Day-Glo pastels and primary colours with Playskool anatomy. 2 JUST FOR LAUGHS Showcasing the best of international stand up comedy from the Montreal Comedy Festival. Wednesday 19 July 2006 MEDIA RELEASE PERTH MINT RELEASES 'MOVING' TRIBUTE TO 50 YEARS OF TELEVISION A unique square coin styled on an early television set, complete with moving images, has been released by The Perth Mint as a tribute to the past 50 years of Australian television. Struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality and issued as Australian legal tender, the 50 Years of Australian Television 1956-2006 coin features the Mint's highly acclaimed 'lenticular' imaging effects to portray six television icons from the past 50 years of broadcasting. The Perth Mint is the only mint in the world to issue legal tender coins displaying 'moving' lenticular images. Two previous lenticular issues, the 35th Anniversary of the First Moon Walk and the 60th Anniversary of the End of World War II 1945-2005, have proved a popular concept among collectors. Announcing the coin at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum, Perth Mint General Manager Veronica Maguire said popular interest in the 50th anniversary of Australian television was reflected in the Powerhouse's successful On The Box exhibition. "Like the classic clips and TV memorabilia at the Powerhouse, The Perth Mint's numismatic tribute recognises the impact of the world's most powerful medium and the outstanding achievements of Australian producers and broadcasters," Ms Maguire said. "We expect collectors to react equally enthusiastically to this new release, which has a strictly limited mintage of just 12,500. With a recommended retail price of $85, the coin is also likely to have broad appeal among a wide range of Australian television fans." Australian television began in Sydney in September 1956 with Station TCN's This is Television.
