The weekend has a simple goal: to serve as a gathering for women who want to mix, mingle, feel comfortable being themselves, soak up some rays and then party their heads off. Since its debut more than 20 years ago, Key West WomenFest has grown to become a standard for lesbian gath- ering. Couples, singles and families arrive in the southernmost town each year to enjoy the famously gay-friendly atmosphere that the Key West Business Guild — the nation’s first ever gay-ori- ented chamber of commerce — works tirelessly to maintain. Ms. Westenhoefer, who was both the first openly lesbian comic to ever appear on television, as well as the first to host her own HBO comedy special, has brought audiences to the brink of hysteria with her stand-up comedy for decades, performing across the nation, including on David Letter- man’s stage.
