ROBIN JOHN TILLYARD 1881-1937- a forgotten Australian psychical researcher. Introduction Robin Tillyard was born in Norwich, England on January 31 1881, and educated at Dover College, and Queens College Cambridge. From 1904-13 he was Mathematics and Science Master at Sydney Grammar School, Australia. From1914-17 he was a fellow in Zoology at Sydney University, becoming lecturer in Zoology in 1917. He served as chief of the Biological Department, Cawthorn Institute, New Zealand from 1921-28. In 1928 Tillyard became the Chief Entomologist to the Commonwealth of Australia. Tillyard became interested in psychical research and worked closely with Harry Price on his visits to England, in 1926 becoming a Vice-President of the National Laboratory of Psychical Research (NLPR). Tillyard became convinced of survival of the human personality after death through his experiences with “Margery” (Mrs Mina Stinson Crandon 1888-1941) in a solus sitting with Margery on August 10th 1928. In its August 18 1928 edition the scientific journal Nature published his findings. Then a tragic prediction through another medium was fulfilled on January 13 1937, when Dr Tillyard was killed in a car crash. 233 Working with Harry Price. In 1926 Tillyard co-operated with Price and conducted a special test séance with a young medium found by Harry Price in 1923, who became widely known as Stella C.

  • The Spiritualist Movement: Speaking with the Dead in America and Around the World Edited by Christopher M
Journal of Scientifi c Exploration, Vol. 28, No. 4, pp. 701–723, 2014 0892-3310/14 BOOK REVIEW The Spiritualist Movement: Speaking with the Dead in America and Around the World edited by Christopher M. Moreman. 3 volumes. Santa Barbara, CA: Praeger, 2013. 236 + 299 + 270 pp. $163 (hardcover). ISBN 978-0-313-39947-3. The Spiritualist Movement is divided into three hardback volumes (handsomely produced) which between them contain 43 chapters on assorted aspects of the subject, the boundaries of which are generously interpreted. Most of the chapters are between 15 and 25 pages in length. The topics covered can be relatively narrow or relatively broad, and not all of them will be of keen interest to every reader. The contributors (who range from Ph.D. candidates to emeritus professors) are of varied academic backgrounds and attitudes toward the phenomena or alleged phenomena of Spiritualism. Some are pretty skeptical, others less so—indeed (interestingly), several are or have been practicing mediums. However, excessive partisanship, pro or con, is refreshingly absent. The editor, Christopher Moreman, makes clear in his Introduction (which is printed in each of the three volumes) that his “collection” (he also refers to it as an “anthology”) does not aim to provide a “comprehensive coverage of scholarship on Spiritualism,” but rather to “illustrate the complexity of the movement and the ways it might be open to academic consideration.” And this is the light in which we must consider it. I shall begin with a brief characterization of each volume. Volume 1 is subtitled American Origins and Global Proliferation, which is a touch misleading, because, although the contents are largely historical and the immediate impetus, from 1848, for the modern Spiritualist movement was American, the origins of the movement go much further back, and there is in fact very little about the United States in the volume.

But this happened recently when Dr Donald West published his entry about Samuel Soal in the new online SPR encyclopedia.1 Although the charge related to ESP experiments, it does cast doubt over Soal’s work with mediums, including his supposed case of a living communicator, Gordon Davis. The reputation of the medium Blanche Cooper, a friend of Mrs Leonard incidentally, suffered because of Soal’s claims. There are more details of his life and of his work with mediums in the long obituary written by Mrs Goldney for Parapsychology Review, which is reproduced below by permission of Lisette Coly, president of the Parapsychology Foundation.2 S. G. SOAL – A PERSONAL TRIBUTE By K. M. Goldney On February 21, 1975, Dr. S. G. Soal died at his home in North Wales, aged 85. Dr. Soal was President of the Society for Psychical Research, London, for the two years 1950-1951 and over the preceding years he had become Britain’s leading psychical researcher.

  • The Fraudulent Experimenter: Professor Hansel's Case Against Psychical Research
JOURNAL of the Society for Psychical Research Volume 44 No. 735 March 1968 THE FRAUDULENT EXPERIMENTER: PROFESSOR HANSEL'S CASE AGAINST PSYCHICAL RESEARCH by R. G. Medhurst ESP: A Scientific Evaluation. By C. E. M. Hansel, with an introduction by Edwin G. Boring. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1966. Pp. xxi + 263. $6.95. ESP: A Scientific Evaluation: By C. E. M. Hansel: A reply by S. G. Soal, Privately published, no date, pp. 11 (there is also a version in which pp. 8, 10 and 11 have been corrected by hand). Professor Hansel's publishers refer to his 'special' study of extra-sensory perception, presumably with the implication that studies in this field, hitherto, have been merely casual affairs. They also describe his book as a 'fully developed objective study', and as an 'authoritative znd exhaustive work'. One might easily infer both from the publisher's blurb and from Professor Boring's enthusiastic introduction that this book, which is intended to demolish the case for the reality of psychical phenomena, is unique among the multitudinous publications in (so the publishers remark) 'an area marked by misinformation, misguided enthu- siasm, and prejudice'. In reality it is only the latest of an extensive 'anti-psychical' literature, going back to the beginnings of the subject. Early examples are J. N. Maskelyne's Modern Spiritualism (1876) and The Supernatural? (1 891) by the same author in col- laboration with Dr L. A. Weatherly. In the present century, some examples of varying merit are Professor Jastrow's Fact and Fable in Psychology (1901), Ivor Tuckett's The Evidence for the q 217 Journal of the Society for Psychical Research [Vol.
