  • Prison Re-Entry
June 13, 2021 Prison Re-Entry by The Rev'd Wesley Owens, Curate As the Canon for Missions & Evangelism, I have been so greatly encouraged by the number of great leaders that the Lord has raised up for work beyond the walls of our Cathedral. Deacon Wesley has shown both great passion and unwavering dedication to bring Christ to men and women that are re-entering society after incarceration. After appointing him to lead a new partnership with Good News Outreach, I could not be more excited to offer the following update on God’s work through him and his team below. –Father Bill It is far too common for us as typical American churchgoers to remain nearsighted in our understanding of God’s grace, and this is particularly apparent in our attitudes toward the incarcerated. We settle for retribution when Christ calls us to be agents of his restoration. Hebrews 13:3 instructs us to “remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them…” This command is the application of a principle at the very heart of our Lord’s incarnation. Jesus Christ did not keep the fallen world at arm’s length; he entered into the brokenness of humanity to redeem us. He did not ignore the demands of God’s justice; indeed, he gave his life to fulfill it. But, his primary mission was one of mercy, forgiveness, and healing. Much can be said about the harsh realities of an American prison, but too often we overlook the trauma experienced by former inmates in the weeks, months, and years after prison.

  • Imposing Non-Legal Duties: Family, Religion, Patriotism and the Roots of Contemporary Conservatism
IMPOSING NON-LEGAL DUTIES: FAMILY, RELIGION, PATRIOTISM AND THE ROOTS OF CONTEMPORARY CONSERVATISM Mark McGarvie, J.D., Ph.D. The College of William and Mary School of Law P.O. Box 8795 Williamsburg United States [email protected] 757-221-1737 Abstract This paper recognizes the legal separation of public and private spheres as characteristic of Americans’ ideas of democracy secured in their constitution. It asserts that political and social presssures emanating from right-wing or conservative movements are diminishing the distinction between public and private spheres in popular opinion. These movements recognize and encourage the existence of non-legal duties arising from family, patriotism, and religion. In asserting a broad-based social recognition of these duties, modern-day conservatives limit the scope of the private sphere and threaten the political autonomy upon which democratic self- government depends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A huge conceptual gap exists between telling someone what he must do because the law mandates it and telling him what he should do because cultural values expect it. Yet, this distinction is less significant in the lives of most people than it is in academic or legal discourse. I argue here, with only a whisper of hyperbole, that the cultural diminution of this distinction threatens the basis of democracy by undermining individual autonomy and the protection of it in rights as the focus of law. Western law requires duties to be established by legislation or entered into by contract — nobody is compelled to accept another’s worldview or moral sense as determinative of his behavior. Moreover, the cultural imposition of non-legal duties frequently substitutes emotion for rational thought as grounds for imposing obligations.

  • Praying for Each Other
Praying for Each Other A Guide to Praying for our Diocese, Congregations, and Clergy 2021 Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! People of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you. Is 30:18,19 Dear People of the Diocese: Here we are, many months into the “perfect storm” of 2020, with 2021 on the horizon. We find ourselves shaken, but being shaken by circumstances is not the last word! We are also stirred up to mission. As the writer of Hebrews puts it, “Let us consider how to stir one another up to love and good works” (Heb. 10:24). So how do we stir one another up and move forward? Here are the key objectives I (along with Diocesan Staff) will be working on in 2021: Assist congregational leaders from every congregation in recruiting and training teams of intercessors that are networked in the Diocese for strategic prayer that results in spiritual breakthroughs, with signs and wonders. One aspect of this will be 30-minute intercession calls on Monday and Thursday mornings with me (whenever possible). Recruit, train, deploy, and support godly, healthy, and mature clergy who are able to preach, teach, and lead effectively. Assess, revitalize, network, resource, and support congregations for transformative discipleship, for fruitful, gift-based ministry, and for bold proclamation of the Gospel by every member of the Body.

  • The Passion of the Christ Six Years On
The Passion of the Christ Six Years On: What Happened? By Don Perlgut (Appeared in Metro Magazine , issue 164, April 2010) http://www.metromagazine.com.au/magazine/pdfs/M164-Contents.pdf Introduction Opening on 25 February 2004, Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ confounded numerous critics and observers by becoming one of the most successful films of all time, particularly in the USA. The film also arrived with enormous controversy about its antisemitic portrayals and excessive violence, and resulted in an extraordinary media storm. Almost six years on, what has happened? Why was the film not as successful in Australia as in the USA? Were fears that the film would encourage a rise in antisemitism justified? Does Hollywood provide more films for the Christian audience who embraced The Passion ? Where has the audience gone? Antisemitism in The Passion of the Christ Suggestions of antisemitism in the film were already well-documented as early as May 2003, with the widely reported Report of the Ad Hoc Scholars Group Reviewing the Script of ‘The Passion’. This group of four Catholic and three Jewish scholars was convened by specialists at the Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Anti-Defamation League. 1 They provided a confidential analysis of a shooting script, which was only made public after the film’s release in 2004. In their report, the group unanimously concluded that the script had significant historical errors, the version of the script they read would promote antisemitic sentiments and the script violated many magisterial Catholic documents including several Vatican instructions.

Topics in Linguistics - Issue 16 – December 2015 DOI: 10.2478/topling-2015-0010 Je ne suis pas Charlie. Metadiscourses of impoliteness following “France’s 9/11” in selected print media Milan Ferenčík University of Prešov, Slovakia Abstract Almost immediately after the Charlie Hebdo shootings of 7 January 2015, some print media made room for alternative opinions of what had happened. The articles and the discussions they inspired are replete with evaluations which lend themselves to analysis using methods and procedures of Politeness Theory. The paper examines an example of a metadiscourse of (im)politeness which questions the “moral orders” underlying the cartoonists’ as well as other participants’ social practices vis-à-vis their ideological foundations, esp. freedom of speech as one of the principal liberties of our society. To that end, the approach to politeness as “social practice” is employed which, while insisting on multiple understandings of politeness, places participants’ evaluations at the centre of politeness research. Keywords Charlie Hebdo shooting, impoliteness, metacomment, politeness as discursive struggle, politeness as social practice Introduction aggression which was extensively covered in The quote from my example of a European mainstream mass media and metadiscourse, i.e. a discourse about ultimately invited audiences to take discourse(s), succinctly formulates the positions. Revelation contains seven letters given from Jesus to the entire Christian Church movement. Letters of instruction and also letters of encouragement. Did you know that all of the Apostles of Jesus died a martyrs death except for the disciple John and that according to early Church tradition the Roman government had likewise tried to kill John by boiling him in oil yet God delivered him and did not allow John to be hurt therefore the Roman government banished John to a small island named "Patmos" and it was there at this prison island of Patmos that the disciple John again saw the resurrected Jesus and wrote the things Jesus instructed John to write giving us "The Revelation of Jesus Christ" the Bibles' last book.

Since 1997, WCF Thas held conferences and events around the world that foster homophobia and transphobia under the guise of protecting the “natural family.” It is connected to some mainstream conservative organizations and to the very highest levels of government in the countries where it operates. Thanks to WCF’s connections, its rhetoric and its willingness to associate with and encourage radically homophobic and transphobic activists, the group has had an outsized influence on anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) sentiment and legislation in many places. This report explores WCF’s influence in more depth, focusing on Russia — where the organization had its genesis — as well as Eastern Europe, Australia and Africa. WCF is an organization with strong ties to American religious and conservative groups — including Focus on the Family, Alliance Defending Freedom, American Family Association and Family Research Council — and religious groups — such as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Knights of Columbus.

  • GRACE-SPC FINAL Report
Independent Investigation of Saint Peter’s Anglican Cathedral Report and Recommendations November 22, 2019 I. INTRODUCTION In the Summer of 2018, a staff member of Saint Peter’s Anglican Cathedral (“St. Peter’s” or “the Cathedral”) disclosed to the Bishop of the Gulf Atlantic Diocese (“the Diocese” or “GAD”) a pattern of clergy misconduct allegations concerning the Dean of the Cathedral, Father Eric Dudley.1 Under the direction of the Bishop, the Diocese appointed a canonical investigator and launched an inquiry into the allegations. Two additional individuals subsequently came forward with allegations of behavioral misconduct by Father Eric. In response to the allegations, the Cathedral, in concert with the Diocese, entered into an agreement with Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment (“GRACE”) for GRACE to conduct an independent investigation of the allegations, provide a final report summarizing its investigative findings, and propose recommendations. II. METHODOLOGY A. Scope The Engagement Agreement between St. Peter’s and GRACE specifies that “GRACE shall investigate any and all allegations of clergy misconduct by Eric Dudley, including but not limited to, whether St. Peter’s had any knowledge of such allegations, and if so, how St. Peter’s responded to such allegations.” It further specifies: “GRACE shall also investigate any and all known allegations of sexual misconduct perpetrated by St. Peter’s staff and/or volunteers, including but not limited to, whether the Cathedral had knowledge of such allegations and how it responded.”2Due to the significant amount of information received related to the allegations of clergy misconduct against Father Eric, as well as time and budget constraints, GRACE focused this investigation on the allegations pertaining to Father Eric.3 B.
