STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS (these students studied composition with me while writing the works described below except where indicated). Tyler Durham was one of three winners of the Orlando Symphony Orchestra Young Composer Competition for his work, Dreamcatchers, which resulted in performance of his work by that orchestra in 2012. Bryan Wise’s masters thesis composition, Journey to the West, was rehearsed and performed by the Qingdao University Chinese Orchestra in June of 2009. Bryan was able to travel to Qingdao to be part of this event due to a student grant from the Asian Arts and Letters Initiative. Jason Salazar’s Carnival Dances, for Woodwind Quintet was published by JPM Publications of Festus, Missouri in 2006. Ryan Woodhouse’s Passacaglia for Alto Saxophone and Piano was published by JPM Publications of Festus, Missouri in 2006. Original music by Reed Roye accompanied the video, The Dogwood Tree, directed by Dusty Hoye, first place in the 2005 Missouri Broadcast Education Association Competition, Video Drama Category. Original music by Reed Roye accompanied the video, Mannequin, directed by Art Weisen, first place winner in the 2005 Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts, Video—Mixed Category, and first place, College Division, Original Category at the 2005 KAN Film Festival. This work also achieved recognition at the Asolo (Italy) Art Film Festival, the Oxford (England) Film Festival, the Beijing Film Academy, and the Fort Myers Beach Film Festival. Steven Snowden, winner of the Missouri Music Teachers Association (MMTA) Composition Contest, 2003, for Carburetor Tango (Steve also studied composition with Dr. Michael F. Murray while writing this piece). Original music by Jon Petersen accompanied the video, Held Captive, directed by John Hull, which took second place at the 2002 KAN Film Festival in the College Division, Original Category, and third place at the 2003 Broadcast Education Association International Student Video Festival, Narrative Category. Malcolm Ruhl, masters thesis composition, Cicada Dance, chosen to participate in the American College Theatre Festival Competition at the regional level, Kansas City, 2001. It received a Meritorious Achievement Award as well as an award for Most Outstanding Original Full-Length Production. Excerpts from this work were chosen to be performed at the national level of ACTF, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C., 2001.
