Then the special case of large characters, such as braces or integral signs, is considered. It is shown that such variable-sized symbols should be computed at print time in order to approach the quality of metal typesetting. Finally, an implementation of such dynamic fonts, still in progress in the Grif editor, is described. KEY WORDS Optical scaling Variable sized characters Large symbols Dynamic font Parametrized font Grif 1 INTRODUCTION The expression `optical scaling' refers to a concept known by type designers for centuries, even if this expression is relatively new and not very suitable:1 metal characters differ from one body to another one not only in size, but in shape too. Figure 1 (bottom) shows various Garamond `e' at different point size but photographically magni®ed to the same size. It is obvious that the `e' is, relatively, fatter at 8 point size than at 36 point size. On the other hand, the counter (the white inner part) is, relatively, larger at 8 point size than at 36 point size. The main reasons are : with small characters, thinner strokes would be unreadable, and smaller counters would result in inkspreading (the white part would be ®lled in with ink and would get black); on the other hand, if the strokes of large characters were as fat as small ones, characters would look bolder. -

Bug reports can be opened (category latex) at https://latex-project.org/bugs.html. 1 Introduction This file contains the external font information needed to load the Computer Modern fonts designed by Don Knuth and distributed with TEX. From this file all .fd files (font definition files) for the Computer Modern fonts, both with old encoding (OT1) and Cork encoding (T1) are generated. The Cork encoded fonts are known under the name ec fonts. 2 Customization If you plan to install the AMS font package or if you have it already installed, please note that within this package there are additional sizes of the Computer Modern symbol and math italic fonts. With the release of LATEX 2", these AMS `extracm' fonts have been included in the LATEX font set. Therefore, the math .fd files produced here assume the presence of these AMS extensions. For text fonts in T1 encoding, the directive new selects the new (version 1.2) DC fonts. For the text fonts in OT1 and U encoding, the optional docstrip directive ori selects a conservatively generated set of font definition files, which means that only the basic font sizes coming with an old LATEX 2.09 installation are included into the \DeclareFontShape commands. Computer Presentation of Data 121 GLOSSARY 1 GLOSSARY 1 TERMS USED IN GRAPHIC DESIGN AND PRINTING Words in italics are separately defmed. alphabet length The space occupied by the 26 lowercase letters in a given typeface and size, when they are set in a single line without spaces. alphanumerics Letters and numbers, as opposed to other kinds of symbol. artwork Text or graphics presented in a form suitable for reproduction. In desktop publishing, the artwork is usu ally in the form of output from a laser printer. ascender Thepartofalowercase letter, such as 'd' or'h', that rises above the x-height. asymmetrical layout A page layout that has no central axis. Typically, both headings and text would be ranged left. back-edge In a bound document, the edge of the page nearest to the binding. baseline An imaginary horizontal line with which the bases of most lowercase letters (i.e. those without descenders) are aligned. baseline-to-baseline measurement The measurement (usually in points) from the baseline of one line of type to the baseline of the next. See also: linefeed. body size The term originates from metal type and it refers to the size of the 'body' on which each character is cast. The body size, usually measured in points, is the vertical di mension of the surfaces carrying the characters. With digital type there is no physical body, so the term has little relevance. See also: point size. brightness The subjective impression caused by the lumi nance of an object. cap. height See: capital-letter height. capital-letter height The height of the capital letters in a given typeface and size, measured from the baseline to the capita/line. -
