expensive, and something nagged at his mind: the price of the masks was bothering him. Kathryn and Samson have worked in the textile industry in Taiwan for over two decades. They are well aware of the cost of making masks. On their way to to the airport for their return from Germany, they noticed that all the flights to China were getting canceled. Arriving in Taiwan, the severity of COVID-19 was becoming increasingly apparent. Factories and companies in China were forced to shut down. Kathryn and Samson knew they needed to act quickly to prevent their employees from being out of work. Samson still had the mask idea in his mind. However, creating a safe and anti-bacterial fabric suitable for masks could take weeks. They had virtually no time to create an entirely new and government-approved fabric. Meanwhile, the pandemic was spreading into the far corners of the world. The number of infected people Paying It Forward - was increasing exponentially. This story brings to light the miracles that we are constantly experiencing, and how things just have a way of working out in the end. It all began in Germany when Kathryn, her family and their staff were attending a textile trade fair in Munich in January 2020. During a walk around the city, her husband, Samson,

AN ACT OF KINDNESS One of Gui-fen’s friends saw her wearing Kathryn's mask, and he asked her if he could donate some of the masks to some low-income families who couldn’t afford or find any masks. Kathryn and Samson were more than willing to help those in need, and they donated two hundred masks. A friend of a friend is also family. The Center community is family too. Taiwan’s postal service stopped shipments to the majority of countries, which hindered shipping masks to other nations. Then another miracle happened! A long- term friend in Japan lent me a helping hand. Fortunately, shipments to Japan were permitted. Japan turned into the gateway for sending masks to the rest of the world. Once the masks arrived in Europe, an old friend that worked at the Center was able to step in and forward masks to other European nations. The situation in Japan was worsening. There was a mask shortage and prices were skyrocketing. The world had reached a point where masks were exchanged as currency. A friend of mine in Japan asked for help. He said that his hometown was in desperate need of masks. Once again, I conveyed this request and it reached Kathryn. Without a second thought, she prepared and delivered 60% of the factory’s mask stock to the Center. In Japan, some masks were provided to nursing home workers. It was

Among them were John Brownlie and Alicia Haddad, producers of Taipei Shorts, a regular festival of stage works in English and Mandarin. Even so, sometimes clouds part just enough for golden rays to smile upon thespians. So it is that the series known as Taipei Shorts again finds solid footing for making new magic at the Fu Jen CFL Theater in September. LIVING IN THE TUBE 2

William Chen’s Living in the Tube 2 provides a sequel to a short comedy seen last year. Jane (Wendy Chi), an über-cute social media influencer with a taste for the sound of jingling metal dropping into her piggy bank, has suffered an online call-out. She must now split her rent with her sister Mia (Celine Tsang), host of her own gaming channel. With a Taiwan election looming, Jane and her agent Sylvia (Lizzy Mew) begin taking under-the- table payments to give their media products a partisan skew. Mia, on her channel, begins speaking up for the competition. NUCLEAR FAMILY Living in the Tube 2 Nuclear Family marks Barry Hall’s third entry in as many festivals for Taipei Shorts. Hall describes Nuclear Family as Jane Wendy Chi a “drama” that exists in both stage and film forms. Arthur is a 13 year-old French teenager who attends the Lycee Francais de Taipei at TES. He is an autodidact and does not come from an artistic background. He began drawing to avoid boredom. He draws on everything: paper, binders, fabric, sneakers…everywhere. Although markers remain his favorite technique, he now likes to create drawings on his phone and he began experimenting with photomontage this summer. In addition to drawing, Arthur enjoys photography, cooking and boxing.

RICHARD SAUNDERS EXPLORES TAIWAN'S LESS-TRODDEN PATHS

he coniferous plantations of Xitou are quite unlike the cloud forest that covers large swathes of Taiwan’s Xitou Tmountainous center, but that’s part of the reason this popular scenic area is well worth a visit. It’s also a cool, TEXT & IMAGES: RICHARD SAUNDERS scented escape from the late-summer heat, and despite some development (it’s not quite as off-the beaten-track as most places I describe here), there’s some stunningly beautiful countryside. Anyway, the reserve covers quite a large area, so it’s easy to find spots to enjoy the beauty of the forest in relative peace. Xitou lies in a large wooded bowl above Lugu, a town famous for its Dongding Oolong tea, in Nantou County. Surrounded on three sides by rugged mountain ridges, the forest is crisscrossed by a network of surfaced and dirt trails. Most of the trees that can be seen today were planted during the Japanese colonial period, after the site was chosen for an experimental forest by Tokyo University. After Retrocession, Xitou was handed over to National Taiwan University, which still conducts research here; plaques filled with vital statistics can be seen on many specimen trees around the forest.

Richard Saunders is a trained classical musician and writer who lived in Taipei from 1993 to 2018. He has written several hiking and guide books (available at the Center and in bookshops around Taipei) covering the whole of Taiwan, and its offshore islands.

Unless you love crowds, I suggest you ignore the famed University Pond, the symbol of Xitou, and head uphill along the road from the entrance gate towards the Gingko Plantation (the only pure forest of this prehistoric tree in Taiwan) and on to the pretty Riverside Trail, which winds uphill through the forest beside a stream choked with large, rounded boulders. The trail ends near one of Xitou’s most famous sights, the Giant Tree, and the 180 meter-long Sky Walk, a walkway raised up to 22 meters above the floor of the forest. Before looping back towards the entrance, if you’ve still got enough energy, try the stiff, twenty-minute climb along a road that branches off to the right of the Giant Tree to the Giant Rock, a huge monolith that rolled down the mountainside during the Great 911 Earthquake, lodging in this spot. It’s a dull climb up there, but the rock itself is impressively big, and the view from the road above it is one of the finest in Xitou.
