This week in Weatherman Walking, BBC Wales weatherman Derek Brockway goes on two different walks - the first in the south and the second in the north.

Derek begins his journey in his home town at Barry Docks train station. His walk follows an eight- mile route along the coast, ending at Rhoose Point - the most southerly point of mainland Wales. On the way, historian Andy Hinton guides him past Nell’s point - which used to be a Butlins holiday camp in the 60s. The area also boasts a fine promenade and a large beach - a popular spot for visitors as a result of the romantic comedy-drama, Gavin and Stacey. For the last lap of the walk, he’s accompanied by Rob Pritchard, head warden at Porthkerry Country Park, who shows Derek the secret spot where adders are monitored.

For the second six-mile walk, the weatherman starts at the New York cottages in the quarrying town of Penmaenmawr ending in the small village of Rowen. The path follows the route that local quarrymen used to use to travel to work, named after Huw Tom Edwards - the writer and trade unionist who started his career as a quarryman and became known as Wales’ “unofficial” Prime Minister.

WELSH GREATS: HOWARD WINSTONE Monday, January 23, BBC One Wales, 10.35pm

Given a pair of boxing gloves at a young age, Merthyr Tydfil-born Howard Winstone promised his father that he would one day be world champion.

But a potentially career-ending injury - he had the tips of three fingers chopped off when he was caught in machinery at the toy factory where he worked - threatened to shatter the teenager’s dreams.

Winstone fought a long and gruelling battle back to fitness, and was rewarded by winning Wales’s only gold medal at the British Empire Games, held in Cardiff in 1958.

Married with children, he turned professional to feed his family, and soon collected the British and European featherweight titles. But the world title he so badly wanted was proving elusive - until he faced Japan’s Mitsunori Seki in 1968.

Though his fortunes were mixed following this high, Welsh Greats reveals exactly why Howard Winstone, who died in 2000 aged 61, was voted Merthyr Tydfil’s greatest citizen.

RHYS TO THE RESCUE Wednesday, January 25, BBC One Wales, 7.30pm

From the crawly and the scaly, to the furry and the unknown, Dr Rhys Jones is on hand to help save and change our perception of wild animals in Wales.

When Welsh wildlife gets into trouble, it’s often humans who are to blame, but nature can be just as brutal and the weather can also be a factor. In the second episode of Rhys to the Rescue two tawny owl chicks are discovered on the ground in the middle of a wood in Cwmbran - nowhere near their original home. But had they been distressed and disorientated in the storm or taken and abandoned by humans?

His next call is in Caerleon to visit a grass snake - a common reptile in Wales - before travelling to Bridgend to save a rare Manx shearwater, and attempt to release her into the sea at Southerndown.

Wrth i Meic baratoi i siarad yn yr angladd, mae’n falch o groesawu wyneb cyfarwydd nôl i’w mysg. Ond sut groeso sydd i un arall o orffennol Denzil?

 Cwmderi is sombre this week as the villagers prepare to say farewell to Denzil. Everyone is mourning the loss of a dear friend and each finds their own way of coping. Nansi must face her grief alone and, as she organises Denzil’s affairs, she realises how little she actually knew him.

While it’s impossible for Sioned to accept the fact that her relationship with her father will never be reconciled, she must begin to figure out how to cope without him. Will Eileen offer her a shoulder to cry on?

Feeling the emotion getting to him as he prepares a eulogy, Meic is pleased to welcome a familiar face to the funeral. But the same cannot be said of another from Denzil’s past.
