The property lies in the hamlet of Membland, which lies between the yachtsman’s haven of Newton Ferrers on the Yealm Estuary, and the wonderful coastline of South , just east of Plymouth Sound. This is an essentially quiet position with negligible through traffic, adjoining and overlooking open countryside just outside the beautiful twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo in a mild and sheltered part of the renowned South Hams. Yachtsmen are drawn to the sheltered waters of the estuary while further marine facilities are to be found in Plymouth with its extensive waterfront, marinas and comprehensive facilities and a population approaching 300,000. This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within walking distance of the largely National Trust owned coastline. Exeter and the M5 are within only about 40 minutes’ drive.

Membland formed part of the original estate of the banker, Edward Baring, later Lord Revelstoke. Sadly the financial crisis of the 1890s resulted in the estate being sold and later the principal house of the estate was demolished. However, the distinctive buildings of the estate are to be found over a large portion of the area including the property now known as Dove House. Description Dove House, previously known as Lone Pine, is Grade II Listed and is believed to be the former estate laundry and manager’s house dating from the late 1800s. Slate gabled and hipped roofs with deep eaves make this an imposing building, which is well known for its prominent clock tower. Other details retained for its former use includes a ventilator turret with pyramidal roof on the ridge. There is a tablet set in the gable with the Baring monogram inset. Mention is made of the property in Pevsner's 'The Buildings of - Devon' and significant reference to the estate in Country Life 29th April 1982.

The present owners have carried out many improvements over the last decade, capitalising on the inherent attractions of the property, improving the elegance of the reception space and providing almost all bedrooms with en suite facilities. However, the major attraction is the extraordinary kitchen, the former laundry, which has a high rising ceiling of industrial proportions and a spiral staircase rising up to the floor above. It is reputed that the room has been used as a setting for a television kitchen in years gone by. The tiled walls, excellent natural light, triple aspect and Aga of the kitchen help to make this property unique.

Ground Floor The Grounds The property is set on the outskirts of a quiet hamlet with its sweeping lawns offering privacy, together with an aspect that extends over the rolling adjacent hillsides and towards the head of the nearby creek at Bridgend. To the roadside there is a long stone wall with two vehicular gateways, one of which is in regular use with electrically operated security gates. The drive sweeps down to the rear of the house where there is ample parking space and access to the garaging. To one side of the principal lawn is a paddock area, bounded by low fencing, with an old stone bothy set to the lower edge adjoining the wood. Set to the lower corner of the grounds, and exceptionally private, partly sheltered by established trees, is the swimming pool with paved surround and ample barbecue or outside entertaining space adjoining. To the west side of the house, the garden forms a natural area with paths and a large terrace which lies outside the kitchen, ideal for external dining and readily accessible from the accommodation. The Woodland On the northern side of the property is an expanse of mixed woodland with paths leading down to the stream frontage. The grounds extend in all to about 5.3 acres, of which about 2.9 acres are woodland.
