The fifty eight health facilities and twenty three mobile clinics continued to provide comprehensive primary health care and nutrition to nearly one million people, majority (74%) being women and children. Safe Motherhood Services A total of 164,597 pregnant mothers received antenatal services from midwives, out of which 81,710 visited the clinics more than once. The midwives at the clinics and the trained traditional birth attendants (TBAs) assisted 7,428 deliveries and 18,696 respectively while 684 mothers with complications were referred to the regional hospitals. Early initiation of breastfeeding (within the first hour after giving birth) provides benefits for infant and mother. The midwives provided counseling to 14,918 mothers who initiated early breastfeeding. It constitutes 57% of the delivered mothers which is higher than last year’s rate of 36%. A total of 96,066 mothers were given postnatal services by the clinics midwives. Vitamin A supplements were given to 19,956 mothers while iron with folic acid and multiple micronutrient supplements were provided to 19,579 mothers.

Annual Report 2013 | Somali Red Crescent Society 13 SRCS MAIN PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES Health education Integrated Health Care Programme A total of 473,227 people directly benefited from the health education sessions, majority (62%) being women. The health education sessions focused on nutrition/IYCF, hygiene promotion, HIV and AIDS, FGM/C, outbreak of polio and the importance of immunization. Other important topics including introduction of new vaccine antigens (Pentavalent), antenatal and safe delivery in health facilities as well as Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) corner were discussed during the sessions.

Outbreaks and Health Emergencies Malaria outbreak was reported in Bosaso in January 2013 and the cases were confirmed by the use of Rapid Diagnostic Tests and Microscope. The species were Plasmodium Falciparum and few cases Plasmodium Vivax. The number of confirmed cases was 7361. The branch distributed 400 bed nets to approximately 200 families in both Babaq village and cyclone affected areas where malaria cases were reported. Similarly, Erigavo branch responded to diarrhea outbreak in Kalsheikh village of Elafweyn. Nearly, 18 persons were affected including three under-five children. Baidoa branch deployed 38 volunteers who worked and assisted in the three MCH/OPDs in the region and the general hospital. 12 branch emergency teams conducted cleanup campaign in the branch office premises in Baidoa. 45 volunteers led by 12 Branch Emergency Response Team conducted sanitation campaign in and outside Baidoa Branch Office Compound. 75 volunteers took part in social mobilization campaign on diarrhea prevention in the neighborhoods of Baidoa town.

Beletwein branch volunteers conducted sanitation activities including chlorination of water at water points and households, distribution of water treatment tablets, distribution of soap, garbage collection and community education on different topics depending on the needs identified in order to prevent potential disease threats. The volunteers visited food markets and gave health education and promotion sessions to food vendors.

The chlorination activities and sanitation promotion was accelerated and a total of 1,340,000 water treatment tablets and 6,250 bars of soap were distributed in three IDP camps, five shallow wells and six water points.

Annual Report 2013 | Somali Red Crescent Society 17 SRCS MAIN PROGRAMMES AND ACTIVITIES Integrated Health Care Programme Rehabilitation of Physically Disabled People The SRCS Orthopaedic Rehabilitation programme is one of the crucial health programmes managed by the society with the support of Norcross. The objective of the rehabilitation centres as part of the integrated health care programmes of the National Society is to make it possible and equally improve the lives of the physically disabled members of the society and also those who are injured in situations of conflicts so that they can take an active role in their daily lives. During the year, six new bench workers were recruited and given induction training. Monthly staff meetings on issues relating to staff performance, uniformity of all activities in the three Rehab Centres, Financial management and supervision were also emphasized throughout the year through strict supervision. Promotional materials were produced and messages developed and aired by local radio stations in Mogadishu, Hargeisa and Galkayo. The rehabilitation programme for the disabled people comprises of the three rehabilitation centers located respectively in Mogadishu, Hargeisa and Galkayo with workshops that fabricate prosthesis and orthotics appliances for the disabled people and physiotherapy departments that deliver physiotherapy treatments.

Harun’s Story Harun Abdirahman Mohamed is a six-year old child who was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, spinal bifida and clubfoot. The child was born in Bosaso town suffering from spinal bifida and his parents took him to , Ethiopia for treatment. Harun was operated but after three months, he developed hydrocephalus. The child underwent a second operation with the same surgeons. Harun also acquired secondary clubfoot due to muscle imbalance; his mother had to support him to Hargeisa physiotherapy department which performed the correction through a series of casting and abduction brace. The whole treatment plan for Harun that enabled him to walk again with support, involved a series of intense activities such as castings and brace abduction, strengthening of lower limb muscles with sitting imbalance training and orthopedic support training. His Father is a businessman and the mother a housewife. They received information about existence of the rehabilitation center through the local media and Hargeisa General Hospital.

The purpose of the mission was a follow up on the successful implementation of the Integrated Disaster Risk Management project implemented by SRCS and GRC. In November, a baseline survey was conducted in Garoe for Nugal, Galkayo and Bari regions. The main objectives of the base line survey were to find out the existing explosive and mine risks and hazards of the target communities, identify the most dangerous areas of the target communities and to find enough information for proper planning and implementation of the project. SRCS Galkayo Branch The branch distributed 50 units of fishing gear in 33 packages to the fishermen in the coastal town of Gara’ad in Mudug Region in May. The branch also distributed 100 hygiene kits in Harfo at GECPD girls’ college. During the year, the branch concluded a borehole drilling project in Laanmadow village. The borehole was intended to provide safe and clean drinking water to nomads and residents in those areas. Laanmadow, 70 km northwest of Galkayo, was one of the villages severely affected by successive and recurrent droughts in the region. The project was successfully completed in April. SRCS Bosaso Branch

As part of the drought response activities, the branch distributed food items consisting of 5000 kg of sugar, 6250 kg of rice, 6250 kg of flour, 1000 kg of spaghetti and 1170 liters of oil to five schools in the towns of Ufayn, Ufaynherta, Qardho, Iskushuban and Adisone in Bari region in March. A total of 729 school children benefited from the food distribution.

The branch implemented construction project of a water reservoir (Berket) for the Gobanti nomadic communities in October. In response to the cyclone, the volunteers in the sub-branches assisted the affected people to save their lives, their livestock and fishing gears. The volunteers provided psychological support to the victims and carried out hygiene and sanitation awareness in Bandarbeyla, Hafun, Iskushuban, Aluula, Baargaal and districts. The branch staff and volunteers concluded a detailed assessment of the affected areas in the Region. SRCS Somaliland Branches The planned activities of the community resilience project (CRP) for Somaliland were completed successfully during the year. The first six months of the project were intended to pave the way for the planned main CRP actions (2013 to 2015). The outcomes of this phase included production of relevant project documents. In this second quarter, continued was the capacity building of the SRCS staff and the involved community branch volunteers. In the year 2013, a total of 291 staff members, volunteers and community representative participated in VCA ToT training, DRR/CCA training, National and Regional Livelihood TOT Training, National Baseline ToT Training and training on baseline survey process at the regional level. Community baseline survey exercises were conducted by SRCS staff and volunteers. Harmonization of baseline data, analysis, reporting and feedback was carried out followed by project proposal development including the formulation of project log frame, work plan, budget and Monitoring and Evaluation plan. A project inception workshop was also conducted for 30 participants from key stakeholders. Restoring Family Links (RFL) The communication and RFL zonal workshop was held in Mogadishu from 28th to 29th January 2013 in order to give the communication and tracing officers the opportunity to share experience and gain knowledge. On 1st July 2013, one day planning meeting was held in Borama. Officers from SRCS, ICRC Nairobi, and Yemen participated in this meeting. During the year, a total of 21,594 RCMs were exchanged by families inside and outside Somalia. 8,911 BBC forms were aired on the BBC missing programme. A total of 188 cases were opened positively and 874 were closed negatively. The target groups include youth, scholars, elders, medical personnel, students, religious people, authorities and the general public.

Celebration of 150 Years of RCRC On May 29th, a photo exhibition event marking the 150th Anniversary of the RCRC was jointly hosted by the Somali Red Crescent and the International Committee of Red Cross. A selection of photos depicting the humanitarian activities of the SRCS and ICRC were displayed at SRCS Coordination Office in Mogadishu.

The SRCS All Inclusive Meeting (General Assembly) was held in Hargeisa from 3rd to 4th June 2013. The first day of the meeting was dedicated to governance issues and joint governance and management meeting was held in the second day. The SRCS President, Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Hassan, declared the meeting open and welcomed participants. He hoped for an active interchange of ideas. The president saluted the SRCS volunteers and staff for their dedication in delivering humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable people in the country.

The roll call was taken and a quorum reached. The president presented the agenda of the All-Inclusive (General Assembly) Meeting to the participants who adopted it. He gave the floor to the SRCS Coordinator in Mogadishu and the SRCS Coordinator in Hargeisa, Somaliland to provide a brief update on SRCS activities during the period between the two assemblies. The meeting adopted SRCS Health Strategy 2013-2017 and SRCS Finance Management Manual. It also endorsed the new SRCS Vice President and six new honorary members from the local corporate organizations to the SRCS Executive Committee. The representatives from the ICRC, IFRC, PNSs and Kenya Red Cross expressed their appreciation to the SRCS for its efforts in carrying out its humanitarian mission. The meeting was officially closed by the SRCS President.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Coordination meeting established in 2011 was regulary held at the SRCS Coordination Office in Mogadishu. The meeting mainly focused on issues relating to the current security and political issues, the activities of the Societies and ICRC, main challenges and opportunities. The aim of the meeting is to exchange information and share ideas and to keep each other updated of the current humanitarian situations in the country. The principle of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement which guides the National Society7 includes the following: Humanity The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose is to protect life and health and ensure respect for the human being. It promoted mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongest all people. Impartiality It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by thier needs and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress. Neutrality In order to continue enjoying the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature. Independence The Movement is Independent. The national Societies while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain their autonomy so that they are able at all time to act in accordance with the Voluntary Service It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain. Unity There can be only one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humantarian work throughout its territory. University The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
