S APRIL 2003 / 1 NEINTERNATIONALWS CLASS UNION

From the President Dear Sailors,

In November the ISAF Conference took place in Cyprus. Niki, Frans and I had a very busy week. Paul was in the last moment prevented to join us. He had to help Helen giving birth to a new europesailor: Eric.

One conclusion from the conference is that in the future the system for entry for the Worlds will be different.

To be an Olympic Class is something very special. It is very important to realize that we not just can do what we want, we are not autonomous, but a little part in the Olympic Games.

I know for sure that our President Mr Paul Henderson has done absolutely what is possible to do, to get the best Photo by Tony Walsh conditions for at the Olympics. But even if he was told by IOC what to do and how many classes IOC will accept, Paul Henderson is still fighting so we can still hope for no changes in number of classes and sailors. Person- ally I think the changes about entry for the Worlds are very good for the Class, and not at all bad. I think that it is important that we are moving all the time trying to make better.

At the AGM this summer we'll have to decide how we will organize the coming Worlds that are not Olympic Qualifier. The AGM is the right place to hear your voice.

Best regards. Jan Abrahamsen, IECU President

APRIL 2003 INTERNATIONAL EUROPE CLASS UNION 5 — www.europeclass.org — FROM THE NETHERLANDS ACTIVITES. The Dutch Europe Class Union organizes various regattas and other activities throughout the year. During Easter we organize the Spring Cup in Medemblick: 40 to 50 male Europe sailors and many female sailors from various countries. Furthermore, during the weekend befo- re the SPA Regatta we have the Dutch Open Championships for men and a class event for women. In the fall a team racing weekend is planned, which is a fun event in which the sailors can get to know each other even better. Last but not least we sail the so-called United 4 weekends in which mostly Dutch, Belgian and German sailors compete. These weekends are organized by several other youth classes besi- des the Europe, like the Optimist, Cadet, Laser (Radial) and Splash. Not only however do we organize regattas, we also arrange various training weekends for Europe sailors from all levels and we make sure that one or more coaches are present at the big international events.
